Population Growth Assignment

1. Green Pepper Seed Count

The pepper that I cut opened contained 21 seeds. This will represent the first
generation of bell peppers.
2. Green pepper generational growth.
a. Year 1 21 seeds.
b. Year 2 441 seeds.
c. Year 3 9,261 seeds.
d. Year 4 194,481 seeds.
e. Year 5 4,084,101 seeds.
Total 4,288,305 seeds.
3. The graph depicts the above information assuming that each of the 21
original seeds grew into a pepper that also contains 21 seeds. It shows the
exponential growth green peppers would have in five years assuming these
conditions. It clearly shows that there is relatively slow growth at first
followed by a rapid exponential growth.

4. There are many factors that can limit growth within an environment. One
large limiting factor is the habitat itself. Depending on the overall size of the
habitat, population growth can be both positively and negatively affected.
The larger the habitat the larger the carrying capacity will be. Predation has a
significant impact on population growth as well. If a natural predator is
thriving within an area, then the prey will be negatively affected. Climate
change and global warming both can have an effect on population growth
depending on what climate is needed for the affected parties growth. Human
interaction can have a large impact on a species durability within its
environment. Finally competition for natural resources can significantly hinder
a species ability to grow.
Population Growth Assignment
5. As pertaining to the bell pepper, many of the environmental factors will have
an effect on overall population growth. A few of the factors that I believe
would have the largest effect are human interaction, global climate change,
and environment size. Due to the carrying capacity of any given environment,
there will never be a finite amount of bell peppers for any given area. As bell
peppers require a specific climate to grow, climate change can have a
negative effect on the population growth. This is where human interaction
can actually help the bell pepper population growth. Bell peppers are a
source of food for mankind, and therefore can become a profitable crop.
Because of this we can help distribute bell peppers to different parts of the
globe to have many crops, and stave off the carrying capacity of any one
given area. In some ways human interaction can both help and hurt the bell
pepper with global climate change. We as a species have fastened the pace
of global climate change with the release of greenhouse gasses etc. We can
help fight that through our actions, but we can also help counteract the effect
of climate change to bell peppers, and other sustainable crops through the
use of greenhouses etc. where we can control the climate within a sealed
environment.
