I didnt know what to expect from a country like Greece. I had heard good and bad
things about it. The trip was along 22 hours and I can remember hoping that it was worth the
trouble to get there.
When the plane landed in Athens airport, we had to wait an additional 10 hours for
another domestic flight to Kos which is the Island my dad comes from. When we got to Kos,
all of my relatives were waiting for us. We picked up our luggage and it took us another half-
hour to get to the village my father comes from.
It was the most exhausting day I ever had. The only thing I wanted to do was to sleep.

On the weekend of the 3rd of March, I went to the Ryde BMX track with Robert and
Chris McDonald. When we got there it was very crowded in the car park and we wondered
where everyone was because there werent many people on the BMX Track.
So we parked the car and then we saw a lot of people surrounding a little track with
speeding cars going around it. There was also about five people controlling the cars from a
high platform. The cars were about 30 cms long and 15 cms wide with big tread on the tyres
and a flap on the front so that they wouldnt tip over.
Then after the races, they were awarding trophies to the winners. When were just going, a
boy was controlling a car around the track and it was going very fast. Someone else had three
wheeler motorbike, but it didnt go as fast. Then we had to go, so we packed up the car and
then we left.

One morning, I got up with the feeling that the day was going to be an unlucky day
one for me. It was right. I found that it was already 06:15 a.m.
I rushed into the bathroom. I did not see a piece of soap lying on the floor. I steeped
on it and slipped, almost breaking my back in process.
Then I went into the dining room for my breakfast. I gulped down the tea without
realizing that it was very hot. It burnt my tongue. I spat it out and could not eat anything
because my tongue hurt. I got dressed and rushed to the bus stop.
Unfortunately, I just missed the bus. My heart sank and I knew that I would be late
for school.

When I reached school, my name was taken down by the teacher. He scholded me for
being late. To my humiliation, I was made to stand outside the class. I was so upset by the
incidents that I could not study properly. But the worse was to come.

After school, I was on my way home when something hit me on the head. Someone
had thrown a bag of fish bones out of the window and it landed on me! However, luckily for
me, this only raised a small lump on my head.
I tried to reach home save and sound, and did not dare to go out again for the rest of
the day.

I think my first memories started when I was about three or perhaps four years old. I
live in a suburb of Sidney, called Chatswood. I had a happy childhood. I remembered playing
in a big garden. I fell from a big tree and broke my leg.
I had a naughty friend. I dont remember his name but I usually called him, Giant,
because he was very fat. He liked hitting and pulling my hair. One day I hit him on the head
with my bag. So his parents was very angry with me.

Text 5 (for Question 18-22)

In 2003, we and the first grade students made a five-day living in Kalirejo, a
transmigration area in South Lampung. We were 212 students all together. We left Jakarta for
Lampung at midninght and our trip was about six hours. Arriving there, we were warm

welcomed. After a little talking, we were taken to our respective hosts. Every hosts
accomodated for up to five students. The transmigrants lead a very simple life. Most of their
houses are made of wood or bamboo and only some made of bricks.
Living there, all of us helped the transmigrants plow and fertilize the soil, harvest
cassava, rice, corn or other crops or washed and fed the cattle. At home, most girls produced
cassava crips, cassava cake and fried corn. Though dirty, we were very happy to help them
since the works were new and even strange fo us. It is unusual for them to stay till night.
They go to bed about 8 p.m. Because of us, they were willing to chat until we asked them to
sleep or they trained us to play gamelan music.
One morning, our courageous friend climbed up a ten-meter coconut tree to pick
coconuts. Unfortunately, just reaching about five meters, he trembled. He couldnt continue
his climbing so we all laughed at him. But the situation changed. Looking down, his face
grew pale and said nothing. We were afraid of him falling down. Then we encouraged him to
climb down inch by inch. He followed our advice. It took ten minutes for him to reach the
ground. Stepping on the ground, he said, I wont do such a fool again.
The last day of living, we gathered together with the host in front of the sub district
office to say good-bye. Shaking hands, both the students and the hosts couldnt bear to cry.
We left as if we had been a real a big family.

It was scary. Then we went to get closer look at the mountain. We took pictures of the
beautiful sceneries there.
