RECOMMENDATIONS FOR VERIFYING THE INTEGRITY OF BJ CEMENT


RETAINERS AND BRIDGE PLUGS PRIOR TO RUNNING
DESCRIPTION
Because of the materials used in their manufacture, Cement Retainers and Bridge Plugs are subject to damage
during shipping and handling. Occasionally, they can also be assembled incorrectly. This technical unit
identifies a list of items to verify the integrity of and record to confirm that these tools are in good condition
prior to running in the hole. When filled out just before running in the hole, the checklist on page 3 can serve as
evidence that product condition was verified. This specification is intended to be a supplement to all
applicable BJ Operational Standard Practices.

To minimize the probability of malfunction by verifying product condition immediately prior to installation.

PROCEDURES AND METHODS FOR VERIFICATION


Damaged, missing, loose, or incorrectly assembled parts visual inspection
Lengths - measuring tape or machinists ruler
Diameters OD calipers, micrometers, Vernier calipers, Pi tapes.
Valve open/closed fill cement retainer with water and observe for movement through valve and out of
guide or shoe.

LIST OF ITEMS TO VERIFY


At a minimum, verify the following items, record results in the attached Verification Record, and archive with
all other required tool records for the well (see Standard Practices).
1. Top and bottom slips are free of cracks and/or retained securely on the tool.
2. Packing element components are free of cuts, dents, tears, punctures, or foreign materials.
3. Slip Retaining Rings are not damaged and fit securely on the slip segments.
4. Valve Guides or Valve Shoes are attached securely to the retainer body, before and after WLAK attachment.
5. Set Screws in place and do not protrude above gage diameter.
6. Metallic and non-metallic parts are crack-free.
7. Connecting Pins are flush with or below OD of part.
8. Slip or Slip Segment OD is equal to or less than the OD of cones and guides.
9. Packing element components are equal to or less than the OD of cones and guides.
10. Water will not pass through closed slide valve on Cement Retainer.
11. Always record model number or name, part number, size and weight range, and serial number (if any).
