Everyone has a special quality or trait that they can use to help improve a specific
field. In the field of design, many characteristics need to be present in order to create a
design never seen before, such as motivation or creativity. However, the biggest trait one
can possess in this field in order to be the most successful is openness. When I traveled to
Ghana, I had to be open to the new culture and be willing to learn and accept the fact that
I wouldnt be able to act certain ways due to cultural barriers. By being willing to learn
how to act in the Ghanaian culture, I was able to respect their culture even more and learn
about problems from their perspective. With openness comes the acceptance of new ideas
and ways of living rather than one living in a world with a single island occupied by that
single individual.
Traveling to different parts of the world has allowed me to become aware and
open to new ways of perceiving and presenting ideas in a unique way. Ive learned of
over the other. Being aware of the different opinions around me has allowed me to reflect
and try to incorporate others views into my perspective to appeal to the majority. Even
within my community Ive met many different people who express different values that
have played a role in determining my outlook and creativity. In many of the clubs and

activities I contribute to, I use these different perspectives to create artistic ways to
approach our goals. For instance, I am currently taking part in designing a new logo for
the 2016 Irish Music Festival. By being open to accepting the values of those living in
Wake Forest and those of Irish background, Im able to appeal to the majority of the
becoming a part of the wolfpack family, I will be able to expand my knowledge on new
ideas or techniques and share my perspective on topics to others who will hopefully use
my opinions to elaborate on their artistic visions. The diverse community that State has is
values. A designer does not cave into the peer pressure that society pushes on him or her,
but simply takes others opinions and turns it into a deeper meaning that can appeal to all
and get a unique message across. With my ability to be open to new ideas, challenges,
experiences, or anything else that State can provide for me, I will be able to further my
career as a designer and hopefully make an impact on communities around the world.
Imagine a jubilant world where designers are able to create extravagant products that
show the communities the impact one can have if they accept the perspectives of others.
