Re: Proposed Budget Cuts to National Institutes of Health
Dest Members of the Massachusetts Congressional Delegation:
|am wrting to stare the concerns of my colleagues inthe Massachusetts State Senate as well as
‘our constituents about proposed cuts to funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH). As you
‘know, Massachusetts is the second largest recipient of grants from NIM. Last year, we recelved
approximately $25 bio in NIM grants. The work of NI is vital to our shared values and policy goalsof|
lemproving heath to bothenhance qualty of life and reduce the challenges of illness and disability. At
both our strongest and greatest institutions, ke Massachusetts General Hospital working on hundreds
‘of projects on everthinefrom helping patients with advanced breast cancer find the treatment that
best for them to pioneering cesearch on the relationship between Type I ciabetes and Alheimer’s
disease, and our smaller nstitutons like Blue Therapeutics, which is working to develop a nor-addictine
alternative to opiates for people with severe pain, NH grants are making an irreplaceable cifference.
Every dollar of medical research we use in Massachusetts generates $220 of economic
evelopment. With NIH grant money we are not only stronger today, we are getting ready fora stronger
tomorrow by traling the next generation of innovate scientists and developing pharmaceuticals,
‘medical technologie, and developing public heath programs to prevent disease‘Mareh 23, 2017

Massachusetts has 2227 bioscience business establishments, Over 80,000 Massachusetts
residents workin the boscence industry, earning an average wage over $60,000 per year higher than
‘the average private sector worker. These higher paying jobs help slit the standard of ving for
‘everyone inthe Commonwealth,
President Trump seeks to cut funding to NIM by 9%. Massachusetts could lose about ha a
billon dollar in NIH Funding. at $488,784,343, That amounts oa loss economic growth of well over a
billon dollars yer, a $,124203,989.
“his economic blow would be fet by every Congressional and Senate district inthe
‘Commonwealth. lam writing to offer my assistance and support I know you will work to fight these
senseless, short-sighted, dangerous budget cuts. Lam ako writing to thank You fr the had fights | know
