LIVE CABLES IN STATIONS

BACKGROUND:

On three occasions, the electrical contractor on the Victoria Station Upgrade Project has found
unidentified cables with taped ends that are still connected to the power supply and therefore
remain live.

This Safety Alert has been produced to alert those undertaking intrusive work on LU stations to
this potential hazard.

ACTION:

Project and Maintenance Managers shall circulate this alert to those currently undertaking
intrusive works on LU stations.

HS&E to update the PMF Pre-Construction Information Product to reflect this hazard.
For future works, Project and Maintenance Managers shall advise all those undertaking intrusive
works of the potential hazard of unconnected live cables via the pre-construction information pack.

In addition as part of managing the works project and maintenance managers shall consider
commissioning surveys to determine whether any unconnected cables are in the work areas and
make provision for them to be made safe by a competent electrician either before works start or
during the works as part of the contract.

If any unconnected live cables still are found during works those carrying out the works shall notify
the Station Supervisor, so that a fault can be raised to make the cable safe.
