Everything around us is made up of matter.

Properties of matter
General properties. All bodies have volume and mass.
Specific properties. Matter has different, colour, hardness,
flexibility and density.

Mass
Mass is the amount of mater in an object. A table has more mass than
a pencil. Mass is measured in kilograms(kg) or grams(g). We use scales to
measure mass.

Volume
Volume is the amount of space that an object occupies. A car has
more volume than a bike. Volume is measured in litres (I), mililitres (ml) or
cubic centimeters (cm3). 1ml = 1cm3
We use measuring cylinders to measure liquids volume. We use the
water displacement method to measure solids volume.

Density
Density is the amount of matter in a particular volume. Density = mass /
volume.
For example, the density of water is one gram per cubic centimetre (1
g/cm3). A cubic centimetre of water has a mass of 1 gram.
Objects of the same size can have very different densities (metal and
wooden ball)
Measuring density
To calculate the density of an object, we divide its mass by its volume. For
example, the mass of a piece of steel is 78g. and its volume is 10 cm 3. We
divide 78 by 10 and we obtain 7.8.
The density of steel is 7.8 g/cm3.
Does it sink or float?
The density of water is 1g/cm3. If the density of an object is higher than the
density of water, the object sinks. If the density of an object is lower than
the density of water, the object floats.

Matter exists in three different states: solid, liquid and gaseous.
Solids
They have a fixed shape and volume. Atoms are very close together and
cant move. They cant flow or be compressed. Solids can be elastic
(rubber), flexible (paper), fragile (glass) or strong (iron).
Liquids.
They have a fixed volume, but not a fixed shape. Atoms can move. They can
flow but they cant be compressed. Liquids can be viscous(honey) or
volatile (milk)
Gases.
They havent a fixed volume or shape. Atoms are apart and can move freely.
They can flow and be compressed.
Sublimation and reverse sublimation
Sublimation happens when a solid turns into a gas (air fresheners).
Reverse sublimation happens when a gas turns into a solid (frost on a car)
