QuesTION 1
‘Two helical springs form a composite spring in series. The first spring has a mean coil diameter of 9
times the wire diameter, k value of 2.5 kN/m and consists of 22 coils. The second spring mean coil
diameter is twice the mean coil diameter of the first spring and has 15 coils.
a. Find the wire diameter of the second spring if the stiffness of the composite spring is 1.5
kn/m
b. Find the maximum shear stress when an axial load is applied and the spring is extended
(0.04m, Take the Wahl correction factor into account and use G = 80 GPa,

QUESTION 2
In the figure below, the drum diameter is 0.9m, the arc of contact is 200° and 1 = 0.3. Calculate the
force P to be applied if a torque of 4.8 kN.m is required and the drum is rotating (a) clockwise and (b)
anti-clockwise.

QUESTION 3
‘A multiple disc clutch has to be designed to transmit 25 kW at 2400 rev/min. The inner diameter is
restricted to 120mm. 4 = 0.20 and n=4. The axial force is not to exceed 1500N. Assuming uniform
wear conditions find a suitable diameter for the contact surfaces and calculate the maximum,
minimum and average pressure between the contact surfaces.

QUESTION 4
There are a number of limiting factors in the design and specifications of the capacity of any gear
drive.
List them and expand as to why you think they should be considered,

QUESTIONS
Ahollow nickel steel shaft, the outside diameter of which is 1.8 times the inner diameter, is to
transmit 1650kW at 220 rev / min. ifthe shaft is subject to torsion only, determine (a) the size of the
hollow shaft required, assuming an allowable stress of 200 MPa; (b) the size of a solid shaft for the
above conditions using an allowable stress of 170 MPa; and (c) the percentage saving in mass of the
hollow shaft over the solid one.
(15)
QUESTION 6
‘A Shaft is a rotating or stationary member, usually of circular cross section, having mounted upon it
such elements as gears, pulley, flywheels, cranks, sprockets, and other power-transmission
elements”
What do you understand about the stresses that are acting on the shaft and the failure thereof?
