Unfairness of Social Inequality

By, Jatawni Bass

Supporting arguments:
Race

Gender

Education
Race:
Social inequality is shown through race because
the white americans in these books act as though
they are better than the rest of the races.

Another way race shows social inequality is when

the characters stand up against racism. Some of
the characters in the books see social inequality
going on and they stand up against it.
Quotes:
...The hell white people give colored folks, without even stopping to think that
theyre people too. (Lee, pg.269) Dolphus Raymond told Scout and Dill that he
does not like white people because they are racist and told them black people are
people too, showing that there is still racism but he wants there to be social
equality for everyone.

I do my best to love everybody. (Lee, pg.144) Scout was asking her father if
he really is a Nigger-lover because people said he is and that it is not good so
Atticus takes this as a teaching moment to teach Scout that no one is better than
anyone else and she needs to try and love everyone no matter their race showing
that he is against social inequality.
Gender:
Social inequality is shown through gender
because the men act like they are a higher rank
than women are.

In a similar way, gender inequality shows social

inequality from female characters to other female
characters.
Quotes:
Every man is a king. (Williams, pg.107) Stanley is not only telling the girls
that he thinks he is a king but that every man thinks they are all kings and that the
women need a king to become a queen making him better than them and making it
so they need men to be any good.

..aunty brought me my overalls...The garments she most despised. (Lee, pg.354)

Aunt alexandra wanted Scout to be lady like, but brought her overalls showing
gender does not matter everyone is just as equal as everyone else.
Education:
Social inequality is shown in another way by education
level because the characters with a higher level of
education are more socially equal than those without.
Social inequality is also shown through education
because people with more of an education have more
power than those with a lesser education and
sometimes abuse the power that comes with an
education.
Quotes:
Well, some of the best authorities has done it. (Twain, pg.240) Tom looks up
to the authors of his books and wants to do things how they do it showing that they
are more socially equal because they have people who want to be like them.

...Folks dont like to have somebody around knowin more than they do (Lee,
pg.167) Calpernia says she does not talk educated in front of them because they
will not like it and she does not want the to feel any less equal than her just
because she can speak properly.
Conclusion:
Social inequality is shown throughout these three books because the characters

are made unequal by different standards creating the message that social inequality is

not acceptable. Social inequality is shown throughout the books through, racism,

gender, and education. To me, the message of the unfairness of social inequality is an

important message to emphasise because no matter how much it gets denied and

overlooked, social inequality is everywhere and can become a hostile situation and can

cause many disagreements and uncomfortable situations.
