CHS Chamber Singers go for gold at prestigious festival

T
he CHS Chamber Singers Choir re-
cently participated in the Festival of
Gold, held in Orange County from
March 24 through March 28.
The festival, held each year in five locations across
the United States, serves as clinic, showcase and com-
petition for high school choirs and orchestras across the
country. The competition is stiff because a schools mu-
sical ensemble must have attained a certain level of ex-
cellence just to be invited to the prestigious event. To
get into the Festival of Gold, a school must submit an au-
dition tape and audio recording.
This most recent iteration marks the third time the
CHS Chamber Singers have competed at the Festival of
Gold. In the springs of 2015 and 2016, the festival
brought the Claremont teens to Washington, DC and San
Diego, respectively.
This years festival was closer to home but no less ed-
ifying. The student delegation first traveled to Cal State
Fullerton where they met with Nikola Barton, who di-
rects both the mens and womens chorales at the col-
lege.
The students next participated in a clinic featuring
mentors like Craig Jessop, former director of the Mor-
mon Tabernacle Choir. Among notable achievements,

Mountain View students take big ideas to the big screen

S

fore heading to junior high, but it
doesnt usually include advanced
filmmaking.
Students in three Mountain View classrooms, how-
ever, have spent the past semester embracing the art
of cinema, shepherding short films from idea to exe-
cution to an upcoming screening at the local
Laemmles Theater.
Its an impressive feat that started when Jacqueline
McElvy used some big daring to reach out to some
big talent.
Ms. McElvy, a coach for teachers in the area of
TEAL (technology enhanced arts learning), partici-
pated in an Art + Film Teacher Institute at the Los
Angeles County Museum of Art this past summer.
She and a team of educators created a short film
inspired by a work of art, under the guidance of mul-
tidisciplinary artist and writer Gustavo Alberto Gar-
cia Vaca. Mr. Vaca has worked for companies like
Pixar, Warner Bros., Disney and Apple, notably cre-
ating concept art for the feature films Interstellar
and Star Trek.

mond Bar has been Claremonts LIFE
chief Palomares League rival for a few years. Their
star, Neil Tengbumroong, is back this season, a year
older and stronger.
This year marks the first in a long time that no one
with the last name Leahy will be on the Claremont
roster. The two brothers, beginning with Alan Leahy,
who graduated in 2013, and Andrew who graduated
last year, have dominated the competition for the bet-
ter part of a decade as number one seed for the Wolf-
pack.
Picking up the mantle is junior Leyton Boren, who
has inherited the top spot. He looked like a champion
during the Bonita match, giving up just one game as
he defeated all three of his opponents. Boren did con-
cede that the Leahy legacy is a tough act to follow.
Those are big shoes to fill, following Andrew.
Hopefully I am up to it, he said. Boren said his
strength lies in his serve and forehand, noting that he
likes to play aggressively to get to the net first and
win the point.

It was a pleasure working with Mason. He was

very responsive to our requests and sensitive to
our needs. His follow-through was excellent. He
helped take the stress out of a stressful process.

Thank you, Mason!
