5. State and discuss a decision making technique developed by a management author.

Contextualize its effective use in the resolution of a conflict in a school setting.

We use our decision making skills to solve problems by selecting one course of action

from several possible alternatives. Decision making skills can be hard. Almost any decision

involve some conflicts or dissatisfactions. A significant part of decision making skills is is

knowing and practicing good decision making techniques. One of the most practical decision

making techniques can be summarized in these simple decision making steps:

1. Identify the purpose of your decision. What is exactly the problem to be solved? It is

very much important to identify the specific problem to solve. In our school, there was an

incident wherein a teacher hit a child with her ball pen on the right top of the hand because she

was not writing or taking down notes. The parent came to the office complaining about what

happen. The child had a bruise and it was photograph by the parent. Before I talked to the

parent, I talked to the teacher already. Shes mentioning some other complaints regarding the

child. I did listen to her. But our focus should be regarding the problem, that she as a teacher

committed violation which is corporal punishment.

2. Gather information. What factors does the problem involve?

I talked to the adviser regarding the incident. She confirmed that it really happened but shes

denying that it is not that hard when she hit her, but, the bruise was still there. Unsolicited, one

of the classmates of the child mentioned that Dennise was hit by teacher using a red ball pen.

So, it was confirmed. I asked the adviser to take documentation of the bruise to concretize the

discussion/dialogue.
3. Identify the principles to judge the alternatives. What standards and judgment criteria

should the solution meet? Together with the School President and one of the BOTs, we

discussed about what decision is to be made.

4. Brainstorm and list different possible choices and evaluate each choice in terms of its

consequences. Generate ideas for possible solutions/decisions.

Here are the different point of views:

One of the BOTs- Suspension for two weeks and termination of contract. (Their contract is good

for two years, that means she will only stay for this school year.)

School President- Termination right away as soon as she heard of the case.

School Principal- I suggested that no suspension should take place. Considering that the teacher

has two children studying in our school. How if they ask why their mom is not attending her

subjects. Some other parents might also ask why. Which could lead to the exposure of what is to

be confidential.

5. Determine the best alternative. This is much easier after you go through the above

preparation steps. After we did the brainstorming, we come up with the decision of- terminating

the next school year contract in which the said teacher agrees, for, before the incident she had the

plan of resigning already. According to her, she was asked by her husband to the just focus to

their two children. But the other provision is that,, she will not receive any service rrecord from

the school.

6. Put the decision into action. Transform your decision into plan of actions. We put the

decision into action. We asked the teacher to sign in conform to the decision. She signed it
willingly. But before I put it into writing, I consulted the DepEd Angeles official if our decision

is right and legal. He said yes, as long as we did legal actions, investigations and

documentations.

7. Evaluate the outcome of your decision and action steps. What lessons can be learnt.

This is an important step for further development of decision making skills and judgment. I

believe that there is no one best solution. In every circumstances the way you handle the

situation or problem depends on the people involve. For instance in this case if the parent did not

complain that much, the decision will not be that tough. But he uttered a word that if the admin

will do nothing, he will go to the higher authority which is the Dep.Ed in which case might be

pursued.
