Current Events: Immigration

Eduardo Porters article How To Make America Greater: More Immigration

explains the costly consequences and ultimate solution to current US President, Donald

Trumps bar on immigration. Porters article focuses predominantly on how the ban will

affect the economic market (a topic touched upon during assignment two). Porter

argues that barring immigrants access to the US, revoking visas, and expelling millions

will not make America great again, but will only serve to cripple the economy and

potentially impoverish other nations on a global scale (Porter). This is due to the fact

that immigration, both legal and illegal, produces massive benefits for the US economy.

According to a report conducted by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering,

and Medicine, net benefits of $50 million dollars a year were produced via immigration

to the United States between 1990 and 2010 (National Academies). Moreover, the

foregoing text additionally reports that in just the last year, foreign workers added $2

trillion dollars to the US market (National Academies). It is because of the subsequent

data that Porter suggests that if Mr. Trump wants to make america great again that he

should not ban immigrants, but allow more of them to enter the country. Doing so, he

argues, would boost the global economic market and raise the incomes of the poor.

This article is extremely important due to the current political climate. Our country

is in a state of distrust and disarray, the former predominantly focused on immigrants.

Articles such as the one that Mr. Porter wrote show that President Trumps ban is not

only constitutionally wrong, but is also illogical. As Porter repeatedly points out,

employing foreign workers only benefits the economy and adds trillions of dollars to the

global market. Expelling immigrants will not make America great again, but instead will

be the equivalent of leaving trillion dollar bills on the sidewalk (Clemens).
