In rst, federal court says

existing law bans discrimination

For the rst time, a federal appeals court has determined discrimination
based on sexual orientation amounts to sex discrimination and is unlawful
under current civil rights law.
In a 69-page decision, the U.S. 7th Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago ruled
Tuesday in the case of Hively v. Ivy Tech Community College anti-gay workplace
bias is unlawful under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, reversing an earlier
decision from a three-judge panel nding precedent precludes the court from
making that determination.
Writing for the majority in the 8-3 decision, U.S. Chief Judge Diane Wood, a
Clinton appointee, nds discrimination based on sexual orientation constitutes
discrimination based on ones perception of gender stereotypes, which the
U.S. Supreme Court has determined is unlawful under Title VII.

Pleas from LGBT advocates
to continue boycott fall short

The National Collegiate Athletic Association has
decided to restore games to North Carolina in the
aftermath of the state reaching a deal to replace anti-
LGBT House Bill 2 with another measure that civil
rights groups say is discriminatory.
The league announced in a statement Tuesday the
new law is far from perfect, but the board of directors
reached the conclusion to restore games to North
Carolina after evaluating the HB2 replacement signed
by North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper after negotiations
with Republican leaders.
We are actively determining site selections, and this
new law has minimally achieved a situation where we
believe NCAA championships may be conducted in a
nondiscriminatory environment, the statement says.
The statement, however, indicates any site
awarded a championship event in North Carolina or
N.C. Gov. ROY COOPER signed a replacement law for HB2
that critics say doesnt go far enough.

Judge nds probable cause for Casa Ruby attacker
Suspect arrested again
for allegedly assaulting
trans girlfriend

A D.C. Superior Court judge on Monday
ruled that probable cause exists that
Andrew J. Cook, 20, committed the
oense of destruction of property on
March 12 when he allegedly smashed the
front door at the LGBT community center
Casa Ruby and assaulted a transgender
employee.
Judge Sean C. Staples issued his
probable cause nding at an April 3
preliminary hearing in which information
surfaced that Cook was arrested again
on March 31 on a charge of assault, just
under two weeks after he was arrested
on March 13 in connection with the Casa
Ruby incident.
His defense attorney, John Carney, said
the assault charge in the second case
was dropped by prosecutors, who have
declined to disclose why they dropped
the charge.
In the Casa Ruby case, a police arrest
adavit says Cook threw a brick into
the double pane glass section of the
Casa Ruby front door two times after
shouting anti-transgender slurs and
making threats to kill one or more of the
transgender women who were at Casa
Ruby during the incident.
D.C. police arrested Cook one day later
after a transgender woman who witnessed
the incident and who said she had dated
Cook identied him to police and advised
them on where they could nd him.
At Mondays preliminary hearing
Metropolitan Police Department Ocer
Zanobia Hakir, who is a member of the
departments LGBT Liaison Unit, testied that
multiple witnesses identied Cook as the
person who damaged the Casa Ruby door.
Several people were in the Casa Ruby
drop in center when this happened,
Hakir said in response to a question by
the lead prosecutor in the case, Assistant
U.S. Attorney Bianca Forte.
Almost everyone in there knew him, Hakir
testied. They provided photos of him.
Ruby Corado, Casa Rubys founder and
executive director, told the Blade at the
time the incident occurred that Cook had
been a regular visitor to Casa Ruby. She
said Cook identied as being straight but
had expressed an interest in meeting
transgender women.
They let him hang out there until he
got angry, Hakir testied in response to
a question from Cooks defense attorney,
John Carney.
Hakir testied that witnesses told her
Cook has a history of being violent toward
transgender people. She told the court
that according to witnesses, he became
enraged after becoming convinced that
the trans women at Casa Ruby on the day
of the incident were talking about him.
The police arrest adavit quotes
witnesses as saying he shouted, Ill kill your
mother fucking ass! Yall tranny mother
fuckers think somebody wont fuck you up!
The adavit says Cook picked up a bar
of soap from a table and threw it at one of
the trans women, which struck her in the
right shoulder. It says no injury resulted.
He then stormed out of the building and
one of the witnesses locked the door, the
adavit says.
It was at that time that he picked up
a brick and threw it twice into the door,
shattering the double paned glass section
of the door, before eeing the area.
D.C. police initially charged Cook
with misdemeanor assault and felony
threats to kill in addition to destruction of
property. The U.S. Attorneys Oce led
only the felony destruction of property
charge in court. A spokesperson for the
U.S. Attorneys Oce said prosecutors
might le additional charges against Cook
as the case moves forward.
Following the judges nding of
probable cause on Monday the case has
been referred to a grand jury, according
to court records.
At Mondays hearing Judge Staples also
denied a request by prosecutor Forte that
Cooks release status be revoked and that
he be held pending trial. Forte asked for
the change in the release status because
of Cooks latest arrest on March 31 for
assault.
Defense attorney Carney argued that the
existing status, in which Cook was released
on his own recognizance and which orders
him to stay away from Casa Ruby and all
potential prosecution witnesses, should
remain in place. He said incarcerating Cook
was unwarranted because the charge in
the March 31 arrest was no papered by
the U.S. Attorneys oce.
Bill Miller, a spokesperson for the
U.S. Attorneys oce, told the Blade on
Monday that the oce has a policy of
not disclosing its reasons for dropping
charges in cases like this one.
A police incident report for the March 31
arrest lists a male name for the victim of
the assault and classies it as an incident
of domestic violence. It says Cook and the
victim are in a romantic relationship.
However, sources familiar with the case
say the victim is a transgender woman
who apparently was misidentied in the
police incident report.

Sale of Phase 1 ends
45-year run of lesbian bar
The Phase 1, a lesbian bar that has
operated in the Barracks Row section
of Capitol Hill since 1970, became
a part of gay bar history last month
when its building, owned by Phase 1
co-founder Allen Carroll, sold for $3.3
million, according city tax records.
Although Phase 1 has been closed
since last June, Carroll applied to
have its liquor license stored in
safekeeping at the citys Alcoholic
Beverage Regulation Administration,
raising speculation and hope by
some of its loyal customers that he
might reopen the iconic club.

Some of Phase 1s regular customers speculated that as LGBT rights advances
changed the gay and lesbian social scene many former gay bar customers, men and
women, feel comfortable going to other clubs that welcome both gays and straights.
City tax records show that although Phase 1 operated in its building at 525 8th St.,
S.E. for many years, Carrolls Ft. Washington, Md., based company, AJC II LLC, bought
the building in December 2009 for just over $1.8 million. His sale of the building
eight years later yielded a prot of just under $1.5 million, city records show.
A large sign hanging on the front wall this week says the building is up for
lease and is well suited for a restaurant.
In recent years, the Phase 1 became known as the longest continuously
operating lesbian bar in the country. In 1970, when Carroll and his partner Chris
Jensen opened the bar, they were among just a small number of gay bar owners
who sought to open an exclusively lesbian bar.
Former Phase 1 manager and bartender Angela Lombardi told the Blade in a
2015 interview, when Carol closed the bar for renovation and didnt make it clear
when or if he would reopen, praised Carol for his many years of commitment to
keeping the bar open.
Hes done more than fucking anyone else, more than any lady, more than
anyone for our community and for that he deserves serious accolades,
Lombardi said. He kept it open through thick and thin. Thats his baby. Thats
the bar that started it all for him and Chris, she said.
Allen has really fought for 45 years to keep those doors open, she said.

Gorsuch nomination heads to Senate oor
Democrats vow libuster
of high court pick

The Senate Judiciary Committee
advanced Monday the nomination
of Neil Gorsuch to the U.S. Supreme
Court, although the nomination has hit
a signicant snag now that Democrats
have secured the votes necessary to
successfully libuster his conrmation.
Before the committee approved the
Gorsuch nomination on a party-line vote,
Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.) announced
during the session he would oppose the
nominee and support the Democratic
libuster against him. That made him the
41st vote needed for a successful libuster.
I am not ready to end debate on this
issue, so I will be voting against cloture,
unless we are able as a body to nally
sit down and nd a way to avoid the
nuclear option and ensure the process to
ll the next vacancy on the court is not a
narrowly partisan process, Coons said.
Rainbow Flag creator Gilbert Baker dies at 65
Acclaimed artist exhibited
work around the world

Gilbert Baker, the creator of the
Rainbow Flag, which has become
internationally recognized as the symbol
of the modern LGBT rights movement,
died on Friday, March 31 of natural causes
at his home in New York City. He was 65.
According to an ocial biography
posted on his website, Baker worked as a
ag maker since June 1978, when his rst
of many versions of the Rainbow Flag was
displayed at San Franciscos LGBT Pride
celebration.
Over the next 39 years Baker became
known internationally as a highly
acclaimed ag maker and artist, with
his ag designs being displayed for the
premier of China and the presidents of
France, Venezuela, and the Philippines
as well as for the King of Spain, among
others, his biography says.
As an artist, Baker returned again and
again to variations on the Rainbow Flag
motif and his artwork and ag creations
have appeared in galleries and museums
around the word, the biography says.
It adds that in 2000 Baker put on
his rst exhibition of photographs and

the humanity and justice required
when evaluating the cases before him,

Judge Gorsuchs record at the Department
of Justice, his tenure on the bench, his
appearance before the Senate and his
written questions for the record, I cannot
support this nomination.

cloture vote for the nominee is held on
Thursday, Senate Majority Leader Mitch
McConnell (R-Ky.) is likely to invoke the
nuclear option, which would eliminate
the long-standing ability to libuster
nominees to the U.S. Supreme Court.
McConnell strongly suggested during
an interview on NBCs Meet the Press he
would invoke the nuclear option when
he declared Gorsuch would be conrmed
this week with or without help from
Democrats.
LGBT rights supporters have universally
opposed the conrmation of Gorsuch
to the Supreme Court, citing as a chief
concern his decision on the 11th Circuit
in favor of Hobby Lobby being allowed
to deny contraception coverage for
employees under Obamacare on the basis
of religious freedom for the corporation.
That reasoning, observers say, could
lead to religious exemptions for LGBT
non-discrimination laws should they be
adjudicated by the U.S. Supreme Court.

With more bombshell revelations over the
investigation into Russian involvement in the
2016 presidential election, gay Democratic
Rep. Mark Takano has added his voice to the
growing chorus calling for Republican Rep.
Devin Nunes to recuse himself as chair of
the House Intelligence Committee.
In an interview last week, Takano talked
about the uproar over his conservative
California colleague and how he thinks
Democrats winning back the House
is the only way to get a fair and true
investigation in Russian interference and
possible Trump collusion. Takano is co-
chair of the Democratic Congressional
Campaign Committees LGBT Caucus with
Colorado Rep. Jared Polis.
Nunes, who was on Donald Trumps
presidential transition team, is under
intense re for announcing at a news
conference outside the White House that
he had seen intelligence reports showing
that Trump, his campaign and his
associates had been incidentally swept
up in foreign surveillance activities during
the Obama administration. Nunes said he
talked to House Speaker Paul Ryan before
dashing to the White House to brief
Trump. However, Nunes failed to follow
protocol and brief his Ranking Democratic
committee co-chair Rep. Adam Schi or
any of the other committee members
about what he discovered.
During a brief White House photo
op, Trump said he felt somewhat
vindicated by Nunes revelation since FBI
Director Comey and other high-ranking
ocials, including Nunes, had said a
Trump tweet claiming former President
Obama had ordered wiretapping of
Trump Tower during the 2016 campaign
was not true.

Puerto Rico Senate rescinds trans protections
The president of the Puerto Rico Senate has eliminated protections for the chambers transgender employees.
El Vocero, a Puerto Rican newspaper, reported Sen. Thomas Rivera Schatz on March 31 rescinded an administrative order that
said trans Senate employees could use bathrooms and wear clothing that is consistent with their gender identity.
Then-Senate President Eduardo Bhata signed the order in 2014. El Vocero reported Schatz who is a vocal opponent of
LGBT rights in the U.S. commonwealth removed from the list of discriminatory practices the requirement that a person
(must) dress in a manner that is inconsistent with their gender identity or prevents them from expressing their identity.
Pedro Julio Serrano, founder of Puerto Rico Para Tod@s, a Puerto Rican advocacy group, in a sharply worded statement he
released on Tuesday accused Rivera of violating the islands 2013 law that bans discrimination based on sexual orientation
and gender identity.

Lambda Legal was among the plaintis in a 2014 lawsuit that challenged Puerto Ricos same-sex marriage ban. The LGBT
legal group on Tuesday said Rivera has violated Puerto Rican and federal law and the U.S. constitution.

their countrys capital last weekend say

Rosalba Karina Crisstomo, a lesbian
activist who is the executive director
of Comunidad de Lesbianas Inclusivas
Dominicanas, is among the more than
300 people from across the region who
attended the conference that the Gay and
Lesbian Victory Institute co-sponsored
with Diversidad Dominicana, a Dominican
advocacy group, and Caribe Armativo, an
LGBT organization that works throughout
northern Colombia.
Crisstomo told the Washington Blade
on Saturday that Brewster has had a big
impact in the country.
The Dominican Republic is a country
controlled by religious Catholics, said
Crisstomo. Wally came here to the
Dominican Republic and helped us
with development and in doing that he
highlighted all of the discrimination that
exists towards the LGBT community in
the country.
Then-President Obama nominated
Brewster, who is a former member of
the Human Rights Campaigns board of
directors, to represent the U.S. in the
Dominican Republic in 2013.
Brewster and his husband, Bob
Satawake, frequently appeared together
at public events and in the Dominican
media. They also met regularly with LGBT
rights advocates.
Brewster and Satawake attended
a candlelight vigil in Santo Domingos
Parque Duarte which is a popular
gathering place for LGBT Dominicans
last June after the massacre at the
Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Fla. Brewster
and Satawake also participated in Santo
Domingos Pride parade that took place a
few weeks later.
The two men attended the June 2015
launch of an LGBT tourism campaign that
took place in Santo Domingos Old City.
Brewster and Satawake helped
secure a grant from the U.S. Agency
for International Development that
supported eorts to promote LGBT
participation in the Dominican Republics
political process. They also helped
pave the way for the Santo Domingo
conference, which is the largest LGBT-
specic gathering that has ever taken
place in the country.

nominate anyone to succeed him.
Yimbert Fliz, president of Voluntariado
LGBT Dominicano, an advocacy group
that works throughout the Dominican
Republic, told the Blade on Friday that
his organization has not had any type
of support from the U.S. Embassy since
Brewsters departure.
French Ambassador to the Dominican
Republic Jos Gmez on March 30 hosted
a reception for conference participants at
his home. Ocials from the U.S. Embassy
and USAID were among those who
attended.
The ambassador and his husbands
departure from the country has aected
us, Fliz told the Blade, referring to
Brewster and Satawake.
Religious leaders and politicians
regularly attacked Brewster and Satawake
during his ambassadorship.
Nicols de Jess Lpez Rodrguez, the
former cardinal of the Archdiocese of Santo
Domingo, repeatedly used anti-gay slurs to
describe Brewster. A group of Dominican
intellectuals and religious leaders last year
urged President Danilo Medina to declare
Brewster persona non grata because
of a U.S.-backed education initiative they
claimed would turn our adolescents gay.

challenge stereotypes about LGBT people
in the Dominican Republic in spite of the
backlash they received.

community in the country is not one of
a conservative community, she added.
But we have many people in the LGBT
community who are conservative.
Raposo told the Blade the Catholic
Church in the Dominican Republic and
the cardinals within it can have more
power in the country because Brewster
and Satawake are no longer challenging
them. She also said Dominican LGBT
rights advocates are afraid they will lose
U.S. support.

we have seen will be erased with a simple

attending a Human Rights Campaign summit this week in D.C.
Activists from Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Uganda, Bangladesh, Cambodia,
China, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Latvia,
Macedonia, Russia, Ukraine, Brazil, Colombia, Jamaica, Peru, Algeria, Iraq,
Lebanon, Libya, Sudan and Tunisia are attending the second annual HRC Global
Innovative Advocacy Summit that is taking place through April 7. Caleb Orozco,
an LGBT advocate from Belize who successfully challenged his countrys sodomy
law, is also taking part in the gathering that began on Monday.
The activists on Monday took part in a roundtable discussion with U.S. Reps.
Joe Kennedy (D-Mass.) and Alan Lowenthal (D-Calif.) and met with Clifton Cortez,
who is the World Banks rst LGBT and intersex adviser. They also attended
a reception at the Norwegian Embassy with Kare R. Aas, who is the countrys
ambassador to the U.S.
Far too many LGBTQ people live in places around the world where there are
few to no legal protections, draconian civil or criminal penalties for being LGBTQ
and sometimes even threats of violence or death, HRC Global Director Ty Cobb
told the Washington Blade on Tuesday in a statement. Now more than ever

LGBTQ people everywhere.

Federal appeals court rules anti-gay bias illegal

Any discomfort, disapproval, or job
decision based on the fact that the
complainantwoman or man dresses
dierently, speaks dierently, or dates
or marries a same-sex partner, is a
reaction purely and simply based on sex,
Wood writes. That means that it falls
within Title VIIs prohibition against sex
discrimination, if it aects employment in
one of the specied ways.
Wood also relies heavily on the
reasoning in the 1967 U.S. Supreme Court
decision in the case of Loving v. Virginia,
which struck down bans on interracial
marriage and served as a basis for the
courts ruling in favor of marriage equality
in 2015.
Changing the race of one partner
made a dierence in determining the
legality of the conduct, and so the law
rested on distinctions drawn according
to race, which were unjustiable and
racially discriminatory, Wood writes. So
too, here. If we were to change the sex
of one partner in a lesbian relationship,
the outcome would be dierent. This
reveals that the discrimination rests on
distinctions drawn according to sex.
Wood cautions the ruling decided
only the issue put before us and not, for
example, whether Ivy Tech is a religious
institution and therefore entitled to the
religious exemption under Title VII, nor
the legality of anti-gay discrimination in
the context of the provision of social or
public services.
We hold only that a person who alleges
that she experienced employment dis-
crimination on the basis of her sexual
orientation has put forth a case of sex
discrimination for Title VII purposes,
Wood concludes. It was therefore wrong
to dismiss Hivelys complaint for failure to
state a claim.
In a new trend, a number of district
courts have begun to rule anti-gay
discrimination violates federal laws
against sex discrimination, but federal
appeals courts including the 11th
Circuit and the 2nd Circuit had
continued to reject that interpretation of
Title VII until now. The 7th Circuit ruling
marks the rst time a federal court has
reached that conclusion after decades of
gay, lesbian and bisexual plaintis ling
complaints before federal courts under
that law.
The ruling reverses and remands the
lower court ruling in the case, which was
led in 2014 by Kimberly Hively against
her former employer, the Indiana-based
Ivy Tech Community College, where
she worked as a part-time professor.
The lawsuit alleged the school violated
Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 by
denying Hively full-time employment and
U.S. Chief Judge DIANE WOOD said discrimination based on sexual orientation constitutes
discrimination based on ones perception of gender stereotypes.

Echoing Wood in a concurring decision
is U.S. Circuit Judge Richard Posner, who
was responsible for the 7th Circuits
decision in favor of marriage equality in
2015 and opined in this case changing
attitudes toward sex and gender call for
a new interpretation of Title VII.
The position of a woman discriminated
against on account of being a lesbian
is thus analogous to a womans being
discriminated against on account of
being a woman, Posner writes. That
woman didnt choose to be a woman;
the lesbian didnt choose to be a lesbian.
I dont see why ring a lesbian because
she is in the subset of women who are
lesbian should be thought any less a form
of sex discrimination than ring a woman
because shes a woman.
But Posner cautioned against basing
the decision on Supreme Court precedent
prohibiting gender stereotyping in Oncale,
which he wrote is rather evasive, or
Loving, which he said was a constitutional
case based on race and had nothing to
do with the recently enacted Title VII.
Despite criticism of the judiciary
for allegedly interpreting the law in
ways inconsistent with the intentions
of Congress, Posner writes thats not
a problem because he says courts do
it fairly frequently to avoid statutory
obsolescence and concomitantly to avoid
placing the entire burden of updating old
statutes on the legislative branch.
Also writing a concurring opinion was
U.S. Circuit Judge Joel Flaum, a Reagan-
appointed judge who writes that sexual
orientation discrimination constitutes sex
discrimination under Title VII without any

need to reinterpret the law.
So if discriminating against an
employee because she is homosexual
is equivalent to discriminating against
her because she is (A) a woman who is
(B) sexually attracted to women, then it
is motivated, in part, by an enumerated
trait: The employees sex, Flaum writes.
That is all an employee must show to
successfully allege a Title VII claim.
Writing the dissent in the case was
U.S. Circuit Judge Diane Sykes, a George
W. Bush-appointed judge who writes the
majority deploys a judge-empowering,
common-law decision method that leaves
a great deal of room for judicial discretion.
Respect for the constraints imposed
on the judiciary by a system of written
law must begin with delity to the
traditional rst principle of statutory
interpretation: When a statute supplies
the rule of decision, our role is to give
eect to the enacted text, interpreting
the statutory language as a reasonable
person would have understood it at the
time of enactment, Sykes writes. We
are not authorized to infuse the text with
a new or unconventional meaning or to
update it to respond to changed social,
economic, or political conditions.
Sykes was on the list of judges from
which President Trump said during his
campaign hed make appointments to the
U.S. Supreme Court and reportedly was
one of the three picks on the short list
for the late U.S. Associate Justice Antonin
Scalias seat before Trump nominated

The decision was a source of joy for
LGBT rights supporters, who for decades
have made a priority of protecting LGBT

Circuit is composed of Wisconsin, Illinois
and Indiana. Wisconsin and Illinois already
had state laws against sexual-orientation
discrimination in employment, but the
ruling assures for the rst-time gay, lesbian
and bisexual workers have recourse if they
face discrimination in Indiana.

in a statement the decision is a
gamechanger for gay people facing
workplace discrimination and sends a
clear message to employers: It is against
the law to discriminate on the basis of
sexual orientation.
In many cities and states across the
country, lesbian and gay workers are
being red because of who they love,
Nevins said. But, with this decision,
federal law is catching up to public
opinion: ninety-percent of Americans
already believe that LGBT employees
should be valued for how well they do
their jobsnot who they love or who they
are. Now, through this case and others,
that principle is backed up by the courts.
The U.S. Equal Employment
Opportunity Commission, the U.S.
agency charged with enforcing federal
employment civil rights law, determined
in its 2015 decision in the case of Baldwin
v. Foxx that discrimination against
workers for being gay, lesbian or bisexual
violates Title VII.
Shannon Minter, legal director for the
National Center for Lesbian Rights, said
the decision opens the door to a new
era for LGBTQ plaintis under federal sex
discrimination law.
With this historic decision, the 7th
Circuit is the rst federal appellate court to
acknowledge that discrimination because
a person is gay, lesbian or bisexual
can only reasonably be understood as
discrimination based on sex, Minter said.
The court deserves credit for rejecting
the tortured rationales of older decisions
and undertaking a principled analysis,
based on the Supreme Courts armation
in Price Waterhouse and other cases, that
Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 must
be broadly construed to prohibit the full
range of sex-based discrimination.
With the 7th Circuit decision,
workplace protections for gay, lesbian
and bisexual people are catching up
to those of transgender people. For
years, federal appeals courts have
determined discrimination against
workers for being transgender amounts
to sex discrimination under Title VII, but
havent done so for sexual orientation
discrimination. In 2012, the U.S. EEOC
armed anti-trans discrimination is
unlawful under Title VII in the case of
Macy v. Holder.

Cost control for HIV meds languishes in Florida

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. A bill intended to lower the cost of HIV medications is
gaining little traction in Tallahassee, the South Florida Gay News reports.
According to the oce of Representative Carlos Guillermo Smith, House Bill
1405 is not moving. The bill, touted as bipartisan eort to improve health
equity and quality care for people living with HIV, currently sits in the house
health innovation subcommittee and has yet to receive a hearing.
The bill, Smith said, would prohibit HMOs from classifying prescriptions for
people living with HIV at the highest tier in regards to copays and deductibles.

Will GOP deliver LGBT
workplace protections?
New bill includes trans
rights, religious exemption

Since 1994, lobbyists in Washington
have unsuccessfully tried to pass ENDA,
a bill protecting at rst lesbians and gays
and then LGBT Americans in the work-
place. Even in 2009 and 2010, with Demo-
crats in control of the White House and
Congress, ENDA was not enacted.
Ironically, workplace protection could be
achieved under a Republican-controlled
Washington. It will not be the Equality Act,
which provides unqualied LGBT equality
in the workplace. The bill was endorsed by
Hillary Clinton. For Republicans that en-
dorsement and lack of a religious exemp-
tion makes it unsupportable.
The best chance for LGBT workplace
protection is championed by the na-
tional Log Cabin Republicans, which has
relationships with the White House and
Congress. Log Cabin is lobbying for a bill,
which includes both transgender protec-
tion and a religious exemption.
The passage of that bill is realistic.
In 2007, the House of Representatives
by a vote of 235 to 184, passed ENDA
with among other Republican support-
ers Congressman Paul Ryan, who is
now the Speaker of the House. In 2013,
ENDA passed the Senate with bipartisan
support including from Rob Portman (R-
Ohio), whose son is gay.
While Trump has vacated executive
orders, he has left in place Obama ex-
ecutive orders that protect transgender
federal government employees and that
require federal government contractors
to provide LGBT Americans with work-
place protections. There is ample reason
to believe that he would sign the Log Cab-
in bill, if passed by Congress.
There are those who argue that the re-
ligious exemption is abhorrent. I concur
and have publicly stated that opposition.
Nonetheless, having President Trump
sign the Log Cabin Republicans LGBT
workplace bill sends a powerful signal
to his base that LGBT Americans should
be protected. After failed eorts over the
past 23 years, it achieves 3/4 of a loaf.
The other major advantage is the
courts. Much of our success has come
through GLAD, ACLU and Lambda Le-
gal including gays in the military, repeal
of Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and
marriage equality.
The community is well served by the Log Cabin
Republicans. They deserve our strategic support.

If the Log Cabin bill is enacted, it will
be for the federal courts to determine
whether the so-called religious exemp-
tion violates the Constitution. With
Lawrence v. Texas, Windsor v. U.S. and
Obergefell v. Hodges, among others prec-
edents, there is considerable case law to
achieve through the courts the full loaf,

Last week Mayor Bowser went to the Uni-
versity of the District of Columbia to deliver
her State of the District speech. The school is
a symbol of the District in many ways and its
ups and downs mirror those of the District.
Today, like the District, its on the upswing.
The mayor has been doing a good job
and its only gotten more complicated since
the election of Trump and the Republican
Congress. She has to work with them even if
she shares the view of many of us that they
are a collective disaster. The threat posed by
Trump and Congress could impact a host of
services. Any decrease in HUDs Community
Block Grant program could have a devastat-

greatness with an orgy of military spending,
bombing civilians, abandoning allies, fetishiz-
ing fossil fuels, obsessing over womens re-
productive choices, and panicking over the
prospect of transgender people using the
bathroom. For an encore, theyre adding
grand larceny.
The late Sen. S.I. Hayakawa said 40 years
ago of the Panama Canal, We stole it fair
and square. A similar attitude prevails in the
oce of Senate Majority Leader Mitch Mc-
Connell regarding the Supreme Court seat
that should rightfully be occupied by Merrick
Garland. That it will almost certainly go to Neil

speaking out and welcoming the nearly one
million participants at that march.
One of the biggest issues we face is ensur-
ing the survivability of Metro. The mayor was
right to call out Governors McAulie and Ho-
gan on their unwillingness to act and instead
asking for more studies on what we already
know; Metro needs an infusion of cash from
the federal government and a reliable stream
of income from Maryland, Virginia and the
District. The mayor proposed a good one; a
one cent sales tax increase.
Gorsuch of Hobby Lobby fame is due to our
recent stolen election and an eight-year cam-
paign to delegitimize Barack Obama because
he was a Democrat.
The normalizing of this theft by much of
the commentariat is nearly complete as I
write this, despite the commendably staunch
opposition of Sen. Chuck Schumer. The gall-
ing ambivalence of Sen. Claire McCaskill, who
eventually said she would oppose Gorsuch,
only highlighted the farce in which the nomi-
nee touted his respect for precedent, which
no one believed. Lectures of Democrats by
various high-minded persons only obfuscate
the fact that a seat on our highest court is be-
ing stolen, and the courts legitimacy along
with it. Gorsuch received consideration never
given to Judge Garland, and a libuster is the
only remedy.
That the Birther-in-Chief and his party
in thrall to Christianist bullying and white
nationalism are poised for a win will be an
indelible stain on our Constitution and a
slash to the gut of our republic by the po-
litical nihilist who runs the Senate. The sug-
gestion that we should forget it and move
on is an anthem to thuggery that those
devoted to justice must resist. Gorsuch will
never be clean of the treachery by which he
is being installed.
Having made myself clear, I will mention

nounced her next step will be to replace the
jail with a facility focusing on the type of re-
entry services that will make us all safer.
The mayor and I dont agree on school
vouchers; she supports, while I oppose.
But she has continued to oversee improve-
ment in our public education system where
DCPS students are making new strides. The
mayors new chancellor is apparently o to a
good start.

The farthest-right members of the House
of Representatives were elected to be in-
transigent. When they are not lobbing mis-
siles at fellow Republicans, they are blaming
Democrats. Their unreadiness for governing
is poorly concealed by partisan deection.
They have degenerated into a Coalition of No,
good only at fomenting discord.
One thing Trump and his team do routine-
ly is use Kremlin propaganda techniques like
alternative facts, gaslighting, and Orwellian
newspeak. For all the diversionary Republi-

One of the most vexing problems in D.C.
is the unequal distribution of the benets
of our improving economy. The mayor an-
nounced a ve-year economic development
strategy to take on this issue aiming for inclu-
sive prosperity. She sets a goal of increasing
the economic prosperity of African Ameri-
cans and specically focuses on reducing
double-digit African-American unemploy-
ment. While unemployment in Ward 8 was
16.8 percent when she took oce and is now
at 12.5 percent that is still nearly three times
higher than it is in Ward 3. Her plans include
expanding training programs for D.C. resi-
dents for government jobs like LEAP, Fire and
EMS and MPD cadet programs, including re-
quiring D.C. residency for more higher salary
jobs in government. The District is also part-
nering with UDC, WMATA, DC Water, leading
infrastructure companies like Washington
Gas and Pepco, labor unions, and trade as-
sociations to create the District of Columbia
Infrastructure Academy.
She created the Green Book of Oppor-
tunities listing goods and services D.C.
government procures intent on procur-
ing more of them from D.C.-owned and
based businesses.
The mayor deserves support for these ef-
forts to improve our city for everyone.

Horrifying news emerged last week from
Chechnya, where more than 100 gay men
have been detained by authorities and many
extrajudicial killings are suspected. It is a
short step from wanting gay people invisible
to wanting us dead. A Chechen government
spokesman actually denied that there are
any gay people in Chechnya.
Anyone who pretends that intolerant rhet-
oric here in America is unrelated to the spike
in hate crimes should tell that to the friends
of murdered Muslims and trans people.
In 1961, poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko wrote
a powerful protest against the Ukranian
governments refusal to erect a monument
to the tens of thousands of Jews massacred
by Nazis in a ravine in Kiev. He began, Over
Babi Yar there are no monuments. The steep
precipice is like a crude gravestone. He died
on April 1 at age 84.
One voice can make a dierence. Raise
yours because you can, for those who
cannot.

Advance medical directives protect health care decisions
Important considerations,
even if youre married

If you became unable to speak, who
would make your medical decisions? Thats
the question being raised throughout the
country on April 16.
That date marks the 10th Annual Na-
tional Healthcare Decisions Day, a nation-
wide event promoting the importance
of healthcare choices and advance care
planning. This day is a reminder for us all
to take steps to ensure that our wishes are
followed in times of crisis.
Advance medical planning is of particu-
lar importance to the LGBT community,
because our support systems frequently
fall outside of what is known as traditional
family structures. The friends and loved
ones you rely on and know best may have
little power to speak for you when you
need it most, unless you take specic steps
ahead of time.
Not having a health care proxy or an
advance medical directive in place can be

and Learn workshop hosted by the SAGE-
CAP program on Thursday, April 13 at

Presented by Susan Francis of Maryland
Volunteer Lawyers Service, the workshop
will detail the critical documents needed
to secure advance medical directives for
LGBT individuals and their chosen families.
These directives provide legally binding in-
structions to caregivers about the patients
wishes if they are not able to make those
decisions themselves. Issues concerning
making a will and delegating power of at-
torney will also be discussed.

There are two important ways to protect
yourself: you can make your own decisions
in advance by putting your wishes into a for- with your spouse specically about your
mal document often known as a Living Will,
or you can use an advance directive to desig-
nate a Health Care Proxy (sometimes called
a Health Care Agent, Surrogate, or Power of
Attorney) who will make medical decisions
on your behalf. Many people do some com-
bination of the two, but it all depends on the
individual person and situation.
Its important to note that simply com-
pleting advance directives isnt enough; the
people who might use them need to know
that they exist and be able to access them
when the time is needed. Give copies to
your physicians, talk to friends and loved
ones about them, and have detailed discus-
sions with anyone you plan to name as a
health care proxy (you should also provide
them with the original copies of the forms).
You might consider carrying a note in your
wallet stating that you have an advance di-
rective, along with instructions on where to

nd it or who to call in an emergency.
Thanks to marriage equality, same-sex
spouses now have signicantly more pro-
tection a legal spouse would be the rst
in line to speak for someone who is incapac-
itated. That doesnt make advance planning
any less important, though. You should talk
wishes, in the same way you would when
designating a health care proxy, and you
should be sure that you understand their
wishes as well. This isnt a matter of mis-
trust; knowing the patients own wishes can
signicantly ease the burden of making im-
portant decisions at a dicult time.
No one likes to talk about the what ifs
of medical and end-of-life care, but its a
necessary step that we each need to take to
protect ourselves. The theme of this years
National Healthcare Decisions Day is It Al-
ways Seems Too Early, Until Its Too Late.

As a child, Rev. Maria Swearingen felt
a connection to the sacraments of the
church in a way that was, looking back,
perhaps unusual.
Helping her grandfather ll communion
trays with crackers and grape juice on
Saturday afternoons and seeing the table
set on Sunday mornings knowing shed
had a hand in it, made her feel overcome
with just this profound sense of joy, that
I participated in the setting of the table,
she says.
Those are skills she and her wife, Rev.
Sally Sarratt will be putting to good use
in their new roles as co-senior pastors
of Calvary Baptist Church in Chinatown.
Their rst Sunday was Feb. 26, so theyre
still getting used to their new roles, their
rst joint pastorate.
Sarratt was previously a hospital
chaplain and was lling in for a minister
on sabbatical at Greenville Unitarian

How long have you been out and who
was the hardest person to tell?
To myself since 1999. To everybody,
since 2004. I was so pissed o at the gay-
baiting during the run-up to the election
that year, I wrote a 17-page article about
all things gay (plus coming out) and sent
it to friends and family. I then wrote
another one based on the responses
(both good and bad) I got to the rst.
I dont know that that was hard per
se, but there was a deep breath before
hitting send both times. I stirred up
quite a hornets nest.
Whos your LGBT hero?
Frank Kameny. Wow, what a courageous
ghter. He blazed a hard trail for all of us.
Whats Washingtons best nightspot,
past or present?
Town great venue all the way around.
What do you believe in beyond the
physical world?
E=MC2. Nothing is lost when we die, we
just change form. I do not believe in a
human-like God (who always seems to
judge others the same way his followers
do). God is more like a force of
nature (like gravity) and connects us all.
Whatever positive or negative energy you
exude will aect your life experience.
Whats your advice for LGBT
movement leaders?
Engage with people you dont typically
engage with, both supporters and
detractors.
What would you walk across hot coals
for?
Not much. I need my feet for dancing. I
suppose for anyone I loved though, or
anyone in danger (I would hope).

most?
That gay is associated with weak in
any form. Gay men and women risk their
lives in the military and police/re work
every day. They risk social backlash and
physical violence just in being honest
and not hiding who they care about.
That takes a lot of strength and courage.
Whats your favorite LGBT movie?
Bound. The movie poster hangs in my

Baltimore musical
is well acted, touching

Some two-person plays leave you
longing for a third character to enter
stage left and add something to the party.
But thats not the case with Los Otros, an
understated yet wholly enjoyable musical
by out composer Michael John LaChisua
and Ellen Fitzhugh (book and lyrics).
Now at Everyman Theatre in Baltimore,
the two-hander stars Broadway actors
Judy McLane and Philip Hernndez
who deliver knockout performances as
middle-aged Californians with dierent,
yet oddly parallel, lives.
Los Otros (which translates from
Spanish as The Others) is brilliantly
told from two perspectives. Lillian is
white and Carlos is Latin. They take turns
singing about their often challenging
lives focusing on their relationships with
people of the others ethnicity. Their tales
are compelling and surprise-lled.
For Lillian, the others are the Mexican
immigrants. She grew up in public
housing south of San Diego. During
the boring summer of 52, young Lillian
broke the monotony by sharing food with
undocumented Mexicans temporarily
holed up in a nearby cave. As a divorced
mother of two in the 1960s Lillian nds
a nanny in Tijuana. Its through her that
Lillian learns rsthand about immigrant
work ethic and the warmth of Latin
culture. McLane shows her acting chops
as Lillian circa 1970s, now a boozy
bartender who deowers an 18-year-old
Latino as his friends look on.
Carlos others are the white Americans
hes known since he and his mother rst
came to the U.S. from Mexico. Subtly

Eventually Lillian and Carlos lives
intersect in a surprising and almost too-
neat way, which I wont reveal here.
The story covers decades and isnt a
linear narrative, yet it moves seamlessly
thanks to Fitzhughs impeccable writing
and out director Noah Himmelsteins
lucid staging. LaChiusas score is imbued
with Latin rhythms, big band sounds
and pop inuences. Not particularly
hummable, the score is pleasing and
emotion-lled. It works with deceptively
simple, conversational lyrics. Fitzhughs
book is semi-autobiographical. Raw,
funny and so true to life, her dialogue
never once rings untrue.
This production is an Everyman-
commissioned reimagining of the original
Los Otros that debuted in Californian in

The cast of Historias, a thought-provoking new piece culled from real-life stories.
Historias explores queer
Latino experiences

Typically theatrical productions start
with a script. Casting and direction
follows. But with Historias, Rainbow
Theatre Projects new performance piece
featuring six local Hispanic/Latino LGBT
young adults sharing personal stories,
experiences, and thoughts, the actors
were cast rst and the script has followed.
Its not the easiest way to make a play,
says out director Tony Koehler, 32. The
cast bonds as family and friends and
begins to share personal, sometimes
super-emotional things. And from this
we get our script. Theres a lot of laughing
and crying involved.
A recent Monday night nds Koehler
and the cast seated around a hexagonal
table in the intimate library at Luther
Place Memorial Church just o Thomas
Circle where the group rehearses. The
20-something actors are uniformly
smart, likable and engaged. Most are
also activists. With little prompting from
Koehler, the table erupts into a lively
discussion of topics including racism,
colorism and white privilege. Some of
what they discuss will become part of the
play in both monologues and scenes.
While Historias (Stories in English) is
dierent from most of Rainbow Theatre
Projects other productions, it ts the
companys mission to present plays and
musicals that reect the experiences,
interests and history of the LGBT
community. At about an hour long and
performed in English with a little Spanish,
the play is about coming out, family,
romance and love. Historias runs for one
night only at Source on Monday, April 10.
An arts educator by day, Koehler is an
instructor with Live Stories Program in D.C.
public schools working mostly with recently
immigrated youth from Central America.
Im often the only white person in the PROOF
room, Koehler says. I learn a lot about
Latinx experiences. And Ive learned that
sharing life experiences isnt easy. And
that goes for actors too who are more

New D.C.-based sail
racing group debuts
at Spring Regatta

When the rst race kicked o at the
2017 British Virgin Islands Spring Regatta
on March 31, there was one sailing team
sporting rainbow gear. Trekr Racing made
its debut as an all-LGBT racing team in a
regatta that featured 150 yachts from
around the world in 18 varied classes
competing across three course areas.
The racing team is an oshoot of D.C.-
based, LGBT-owned Trekr Adventures,
which provides sailing adventure trips
around the world. The move into racing
for Trekr was in part an eort to increase
the visibility of the LGBT community
within the sport of sailing.
Already partnered with charter
yacht company the Moorings, for their
adventuring trips, the racing team utilized
a Moorings 51.4 monohull for the regatta.
The Trekr Racing group made its debut last weekend.
After three days of racing, Trekr Racing
nished eighth in the CSA Bareboat 1 class.
The regatta marked the rst time that the
eight-member Trekr Racing crew served on
the same yacht. Skipper Dave Sossamon
loves sharing the experience of sailing with
others and looked forward to working with
members of his own community.
This was a fun opportunity to
introduce the other crew members to
racing, Sossamon says. In my years of
racing, I havent met anyone from the
LGBT community.
Born in Baltimore, Sossamon took a
sailing course on dinghies in the Baltimore
Harbor at age 21. He now holds a United
States Coast Guard Captains License
and has been racing for six years out of
Annapolis on his Beneteau 40.7.
I bought my rst boat 20 years ago,
when I saw one for sale while I was out for a
stroll on Maine Avenue in D.C., Sossamon
says. It was a 26-footer and a friend
convinced me that I was missing part of the
experience by not owning my own.
Sossamon put o racing at rst because
he wasnt sure he would like it. The desire to
raise his skill level eventually won out and he
continues to learn from racing in regattas.
It turns out that I love racing and it makes
me pay attention to things that I didnt
pay attention to before, Sossamon says.
Its an innitely long learning curve and it
increases when you throw in tactics on how
to play o the other crew members.
Another thing that Sossamon was
looking forward to in Trekr Racings rst
regatta was the chance to interact as an
out athlete at the international event.
The best way to address bigotry towards
a group is to make friends with someone
from that group, Sossamon says. Its easy
to be publicly out with this crew.
One of the Trekr crew members who
raced for the rst time in many years is
Hilary Howes. She grew up in the San
Francisco Bay area and learned how to
sail through a Phys Ed requirement at San
Francisco State.
The thought of sailing always
appealed to me and I was glad for the PE
requirement, Howes says. It was mostly

I continued to sail with a professor along
with some racing.
After moving to the area in 2000 for her
work in set and lighting design, Howes
joined the West River Sailing Club and is
now the proud owner of a Pearson 30.
Howes stumbled into the opportunity to
race with Trekr through her work with
Gender Rights Maryland.
As a new boat owner, I had the chance
to learn more in one week than I could have
learned in a year, Howes says. There was
so much experience around me.
Howes says it was also important have
a T to go along with the LGB on the Trekr
Racing team. She has been in a 39-year
relationship with the same partner she
had before she transitioned.
Being able to meet the yachting
community and participate in the race
culture was both a benet to me and
our community, Howes says. It was
big chance to make sailing visible to the
LGBT community and to make the sailing
community more aware of us.

breakup is futile exercise

I cant get over my boyfriend Nate, who
dumped me in October.
Its coming up on six months but I still
think of him constantly, wonder what
I did wrong and fantasize about how I
could have acted dierently so that he
would have stayed with me.
The craziest thing is that we didnt even
date for that long. But I never fell so hard
for anyone else Ive dated. I knew he was
the guy I wanted to spend my life with.
I know it sounds like I am totally
needy. Ive tortured myself wondering if
somehow I scared him o by letting him
know how much I wanted to be with him
and Im afraid I did just that.
On the other hand, I did my best to
play it cool because I know neediness is
a turn o. I made sure to not always be
available, to sometimes go out with my
friends without him and once even went
away for a weekend by myself just so hed
know Im an independent guy with my
own interests.
Sometimes I drive myself crazy thinking
he left me because I was too distant.
Now he is dating someone 20 years
younger than I. I cant compete with that. I saw
them out walking and felt jealous and angry.
Im afraid Ill never nd another
boyfriend in the same league as Nate
and Im torturing myself with the nonstop
thought that I ruined my life by behaving
in a way that led Nate to reject me.
MICHAEL REPLIES:
You havent ruined your life yet. But
you might, if you keep looking back with
regret and self-laceration.
You would help yourself greatly by
putting all your eort into dragging
your mind away from Nate every time
you start obsessing about him. Shifting
your focus would likely become easier
through ongoing repetition. Here are a
few suggestions:

When you notice that youre
ruminating, bring your attention to the
present moment by looking around you
and noticing (for example) the minute
details of the carpet, the house plants,
the feel of the chair against your body,
the air temperature anything that pulls
you back into the present.
Take up a challenging new physical
activity. Parkour, ying trapeze, Krav
Maga? Ballroom dancing, rock climbing,
hiking? The combination of physical and
mental challenge will help you rewire
your brain away from Nate and into now.
Meditation helps us let go of intrusive
thoughts and be in the present with a
sense of equanimity, which is exactly
where you need to be. You can nd
excellent meditation resources and class
locations online.
However: I have a strong hunch that
your story is more complicated than
simple misery over a breakup. The
intensity of your harsh view of yourself
and the way youre continuing to mourn
and idealize a guy you didnt know very
well or for very long, tell me that you are
deeply dedicated to thinking the worst of
you and your life.
If Im correct, this is about way more than
you and Nate. Your focus on him as the
great bungled romance of your life is just
your current means of feeling bad about
yourself and sad over all the great things
that you have let slip through your ngers.
Changing this deeply engrained way of
seeing yourself is going to be hard work.
And then theres the way you tried to
be neither too needy nor too distant in an
attempt to be exactly what you thought
Nate wanted. Choosing your behaviors
in order to convey independence makes
you dependent and, yes, needy.
If you could instead decide how you
wanted to behave in a relationship and
then act accordingly, youd be on the
road to actually being an independent
man with his own interests. And I bet
youd feel a lot better about yourself. But
that would mean being willing to tolerate
positive self-regard.
If youre to stop believing that youre
a defective screw-up who must twist
himself into knots to be in a relationship,
youll rst have to gure out what is
appealing about your current view of
yourself. When we treat ourselves badly,
we always have our reasons and these
often have their roots in our life story.
Understanding why we do what we do
makes it easier to change.
Doing this work alone is exceedingly
dicult. I suggest that you nd a therapist
with expertise in self-denigrating thinking
and behavior to help you on this journey.

Lesbian pastors came out slowly over time

Universalist Fellowship in Greenville,
S.C. Swearingen was associate university
chaplain at Furman University and spent
the last year working with a cohort of
clergy to develop a year-long training
program for religious leaders focused on
dismantling white supremacy and racism.
The couple, together since late 2009
(theyd met the previous year at church),
werent necessarily looking for a co-
pastorate but it was something theyd
dreamed and talked about. Calvarys
last pastor, Rev. Amy Butler, left in 2014
to become senior pastor at New Yorks
famed Riverside Church, one of the
few progressive non-denominational
churches in the country. Rev. Allyson
Robinson, whos transgender, was
interim minister. Sarratt and Swearingen
say their sexual orientation (they both
identify as lesbians) was a non-issue.
The fact that we happened to be a
same-sex couple wasnt even part of their
conversation, Sarratt says. Calvary had
already kind of done the work to say,
Look, were welcoming and arming,
so it really wasnt an issue for the (search)
committee.
The job ad said the church was open
to considering a co-pastorate. They both
work at the church full time and say their
gifts and strengths are dierent enough
as to be complementary, although they
share preaching duties. Mostly either
one or the other will deliver the sermon,
but they are experimenting with co-
sermonizing, an idea theyre toying with
for Easter Sunday.
As we met and talked with Sally and
Maria about their vision for pastoral
leadership we were struck by their deep
faith and commitment to being part of a
gospel community, says Carol Blythe,
chair of the search committee. We were
impressed by how their gifts, talents
and experience matched our ministry
priorities and were thrilled about their
upcoming pastorate and the versatility
the co-pastor model will provide our
congregation.
Sarratt says the compensation package
the church oered them is very fair.
So is it weird for a Baptist church to be so
open-minded? Not really. Calvary is part
of the American Baptist Churches USA
movement, which has about 1.3 million
members in about 5,000 congregations.
There are 42 million Baptists around the
world that trace their tradition to the
early 17th century. Calvary has no ties
to the Southern Baptist Convention, the
largest Protestant group in the United
States with about 15 million members
and a much more conservative, anti-gay
agency.
Sarratt and Swearingen grew up
in more conservative strains of the
denomination and though they each
attended Methodist seminaries, they
have strong Baptist roots. Swearingen
remembers some re and brimstone
preaching in her youth but says her
theology has evolved.
Swearingen says to her, being Baptist
means valuing separation of church and
state, religious liberty and belief in the
priesthood of all believers.
Thats kind of the gift of what Baptist
life can be, thats what the word can hold,
she says. For quite some time, it hasnt
looked that way in lots of spaces that
call themselves Baptist, but Im all about
being invested in reclaiming that word.
Looking back, though, she says shes
amazed that even in the theology of her
youth, progressive beliefs managed to
seep in.
What I think is so uncanny and
persnickety about the way the gospel can
work is the overturning and upturning
of unjust, un-mutual systems of power,
these things would still nd their way into
the cracks and crevices, she says. The
goodness of faith life and practices was
ndings its way to me even amidst really
problematic and damaging theology and
its really what we, ministry wise, are
invested in as much as anything. How
do we unearth and let go of and heal
from all kinds of theological language
that really has just been a perpetuation
of oppression and really nd freedom
and release from that so we can use and
live inside language that actually invites
wholeness?
Its a recurring theme in her ministerial
philosophies and similar strains pop up
when asked about the future of the mainline
church, trends in church attendance among
Millennials and even what lessons the Easter
message has for today.
Sarratt says for her, getting to that place
has been a process. She speaks of digging
and deconstructing and reconstructing
various theology over time.
One of the things I worry about and feel
sad about is the fact that in many ways,
queer people still think, I either choose
my faith or I choose who I am, Sarratt
says. The integration and wedding of the
two and either one being able to bless the
fullness of who you are is still kind of a
rare thing.
Neither Sarratt nor Swearingen were
out when they met in the summer of
2008. Both planning to pursue full-time
ministry and didnt see any way to be out,
especially in the Bible Belt, while being
pastors.
Mariah was headed back to school in
Durham and it was one of those things
like, Well, that was great, but Im feeling
called to ministry so this cant happen, it
cant be, Sarratt says.

The dos and donts of
looking for your next home

Its April, which means the spring real
estate market is kicking into high gear.
Lots of buyers and sellers wait until the
spring to list their home or start their
house hunting. With the market and
showings at their peak in the next two
months, we thought wed share our top
tips for house hunting etiquette.
Weve learned over the years that fol-
lowing these basic rules of house hunting
etiquette goes a long way in making sell-
ers and their agents happy (and more in-
clined to accept YOUR oer). So here are
our top DOs and DONTs for house hunt-
ing etiquette this spring.
HOUSE HUNTING DOs
Know Your Budget. This one is essen-
tial. Take the time to get pre-approved for
a mortgage before heading out. It does
not help you to see homes you cannot af-
ford. Stick to your budget.
Be On Time. This almost goes without
saying but remember to be respectful
of everyones time your Realtors, the
homeowners, the sellers agent, as well
as your own. There is a lot that goes on
behind the scenes to set up showings and
coordinate multiple schedules.

Leave the Kids at Home. When you get
close to settling on the home, we will ab-
solutely go back for a visit with the kids.
However, when you are just starting out
and touring homes and neighborhoods
for the rst time, line up a sitter. Doing
so will allow you and your Realtor focus
better and cover more ground.
Be Open to Going Shoeless. Most sell-
ers wont require you to take o your
shoes, but be prepared. Leave the lace up
shoes at home and wear slips ons.
Be Respectful of The Sellers Privacy.
While opening closets and cabinets to
check out the space is generally ne,
avoid opening dresser drawers or exam-
ining family photos on the walls.
Mums The Word. As mom always said,
if you cant say something nice, dont say
anything at all. This rule holds true when
house hunting as well. The sellers may be
within earshot (hello, nanny cams!) and
you dont want to oend them, especially
if its a house youre seriously consider-
ing. This goes the other way as well. If you
love the house, play it cool. You wouldnt
want to tip your hand before the nego-
tiations. Wait until youre in the car with
your Realtor to share your thoughts.
Take Lots of Notes. Be sure you take plenty
of notes on the homes you are touring so you
can debrief with your Realtor and any other
decision-makers at the end of the day. Always
ask permission (from one of the agents or the
homeowner if they are present) if you want
to take any photos of the home.

HOUSE HUNTING DONTs
Look at Listings Above Your Budget.
Doing so wastes everyones time and en-
ergy, from your agent to the sellers agent
to the homeowners, who likely spend
a fair amount a time preparing for each
showing. Plus, seeing homes you can-
not aord to purchase generally sets up
unrealistic expectations in what you can
purchase (and makes those you can seem
like a let down).
Ask To Go Out Last Minute. 24 hours
notice is typically best, especially when
touring homes that are still occupied. We
will always try to see what we can set up,
but if you know you want to see a proper-
ty, please give as much notice as possible
to increase chances we can get in to see it.
Cancel at the Last Minute. On the ip
side, dont cancel on a whim. Your Realtor
(and the seller) has done a great deal of
legwork to set up your tour coordinat-
ing the showings, mapping out a route. It
takes more time to undo it all. So unless
a true emergency, please dont cancel on
your agent at the 11th hour.
Block Access. This one is pretty com-
mon sense, dont block the driveway or
box in another car when parking at a
house you are touring.
Bring Food or Drink into a Home You
Are Touring. Again, it is common sense,
but lets avoid any risk of spilling a latte on
the white carpet.
Bring an Entourage. Try to keep your

group to no more than two or three. If
your parents are coming to town and you
want to go back to a property you are con-
sidering, we are always happy to accom-
modate. But try not to have visitors or ca-
sual friends tag along on your initial tours.
Go Solo. Once you have signed with a
Realtor, do not tour any properties with-
out your agent. Its ne to attend Open
Houses on your own, but always let the
listing agent know you are working with a
Realtor. Also, when in the home, stay with
your Realtor while touring. Avoid wander-
ing o on your own or letting your kids
run around in the house.
Make Yourself at Home. This is not your
home (yet). Please dont stretch out on
any sofas or beds or test out any reclin-
ers in homes you are touring. Likewise,
please dont let your kids grab items in
the home or attempt to play the piano
(weve seen it before!) or with toys around
the house. This should also be an obvious
one, but please dont take anything from
the home other than listing materials.
You should also avoid using the homes
bathroom unless its a true emergency.
