Joseph Haydn (17321809) was court composer to the Esterhzy family for 30 years during which time
he gained a reputation as the greatest living composer. Much of the music of this long period has been
bypassed and it is not realized what a myriad of highly original and daring music was written.
This period saw the full flowering of three musical established forms that were very personal to him -
the symphony, the string quartet and the keyboard sonata, all of which are infused with his own
personal character and strong individuality.
This course will explore works which embrace all these genres as well as touching on some of the
vocal music he composed during these years. So join us for this special Haydn feast.
