Kimberly Conner
School: Peet Junior High Grade: 9th
# of ss: Date:
January 12, 2017
Enrichment/Extension/Modification/Differentiation:

Linguistic learners- review at the beginning of class with the Purple (9-3) ws.
o Review of the behavior of waves
Reflection
Refraction
Diffraction
Constructive and destructive interference
Mathematical learners- review of Speed of Sound calculations from lab last
week
Intrapersonal learners- independent work time on the Salmon colored ws at
the end of the lab
Materials:

125 copies of the Purple (9-2) ws

125 copies of the Green pitch ws
125 copies of the Salmon chapter review sheet
125 copies of the white note taking packet

Standard:
Objective: After the properties of sound lesson is complete, ninth-grade physical
science students will be able to complete the following:

Choose any property of a sound wave and correctly describe its function and
give an example of it in our everyday lives with 85% accuracy (Cognitive
choose something and describe it)
Understand and appreciate the importance of sound waves and their different
uses in our everyday lives (Affective)
Create their own sound wave drawings of different pitch, loudness, and
frequency with 80% accuracy (Psychomotor create something new)
Purpose: The purpose of this lesson is to teach the students about the different
properties of sound waves and why this is so important for their everyday lives.
Anticipatory Set: review and correct Purple (9-3) ws over the behavior of waves.

Reflection
Refraction
Diffraction
Constructive and destructive interference
Modeling:

Demonstrate how to correctly read a decibel table

o We can withstand less than _____ of sound
o Pain threshold is at _____
Rock concerts and ear buds are ruining our hearing
Give students can you hear this hearing test

Check for understanding:

Thumbs up or down if students understand how important ear protection is

Guided Instruction:

Go through each section of notes with Power Point over sound waves
properties
Check for understanding:

Students will walk you through how pitch, loudness, and intensity are related
As a class go through each pitch and loudness wave diagram on the green
ws. Students should identify how the sound is changing
Reteach (if needed):
Independent Practice:

The students will draw two of their own wave diagrams and label how the
sound changes
With the remaining class time, students will keep working on their Salmon
chapter review sheet
Closure:

Remind students that their Green pitch ws and salmon review sheets are due
on Tuesday 1/17
Assessment:

Students Salmon review sheets will be checked in class on Tuesday to check

for understanding
Chapter 9 and 10, Waves and Sound TEST will be given on Thursday, 1/19
