Title: Sandra

Author: Barry Manilow

Summary of Poem/Actual Text:
Sandra became a young mother and at the same time a caring wife
to her husband and kids. She lived a life of regret due to fact
that she wasnt able to pursue her dreams due to her early
marriage and that she didnt have time for herself. Depression
started to sink in when she realized all the things that she
wished that she couldve accomplished earlier before deciding on
having a family life. Her husband became cold as well and they
werent as sweet and intimate as they used to be which makes it
even harder for Sandra to cope up with all those regrets. And
when she couldnt take it anymore, those thoughts just took her
life.
Analysis:

Sandra who was a wife and at the same time a mother completely
lost herself in the process and was trying to find her space. She
realized that she needed some space of her own that would allow
her to discover and unravel her potentials for self-growth. She
yearned for this space because she thought that everything that
she has done was a product of her rash decisions in the past. She
kept on convincing herself that she has done her part as both a
mother and a wife, yet she would always feel a void inside her, a
void that could have been filled if she thought of her personal
development first before anything else. Because of this, she
decided to kill herself. Her act of suicide could also be a
manifestation of her finally finding space of her own, an
everlasting space or inner peace that is free from regrets.

She found her space when she realized her mistakes (having
children and a husband too soon). She yearned for this space for
quite some time because she felt that due to those mistakes, her
life became partially incomplete. Her intense yearning for space
lead to post partum depression and it made it harder for her to
reconnect with her family. With depression and no reconnection
with her family, its as if the cut on her wrist was not
intentional but it was expected.
2nd paragraph: she kept on convincing herself that she has done
her part as both a mother and a wife, yet she would always feel a
void inside her-- a void that could have been filled if she
thought of her personal development first before anything else.
