Course Description

Using the conceptual framework developed by the Institute of Canadian Bankers, this course
examines and classifies the generic characteristics of financial products and services provided
by financial institutions. The goal of the course is to provide financial services professionals with
the knowledge and skills necessary to match a client's financial needs with appropriate products
and services.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

1. Explain the relationship between the economy and money.


2. Describe and give examples of the three economic motives for holding money and other
financial instruments.
3. Explain the role of a bank as a lender and as a borrower, and provide examples in each
case.
4. List the features, benefits and characteristics of the different types of personal banking
products and services.
5. Understand the different types of business structures and explain the main types of
business banking products and services when business would need them.
6. Explain what insurance is and why it is important and understand the different types of
insurance available to consumers.
7. Understand the variety of investment types and the risk involved with each type.
8. Explain what retirement is and the variety of income sources available to individuals
when they retire.
9. List and describe the different types of wills and why it is important to include as a
strategy in estate planning.
10. Understand the role of the financial planner.

Learning Delivery Format

Classes will take the form of formal lectures and class discussions, and may include group
work, presentations, field trips and other teaching techniques deemed appropriate by the
instructor. It is recommended that students attend all classes as exams and assignments will
cover material from the classroom sessions and the texts. It is the students responsibility to

Course Specific Policies and Expectations

Students must achieve a combined minimum of 50% on the tests to pass this course.

Class Participation mark is NOT based on attendance and the professor will provide a written
breakdown of how the grade will be assessed.

Degree Students

In addition to meeting all program specific course and credit requirements, students must have
a Cumulative Program Grade Point Average (CPGPA) of 65 in order to be eligible for
graduation.

Diploma/Post-Graduate Students

In addition to meeting all program specific course and credit requirements, students must have
a Cumulative Program Grade Point Average (CPGPA) of 60 in order to be eligible for
graduation.
