Is Taiwan the new flashpoint in Asia?

"We hope that India would understand and respect China`s core
concerns and stick to the 'One-China' principle and prudently deal with Taiwan-
related issues and maintain sound and steady development of India-China
relations Said the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang in a media
briefing last week. This was a response to three-member member Taiwanese
parliamentary delegation visiting India from February 1. China have been making
all out efforts to delegitimize Taiwanese government ever since pro-independence
President Tsa-Ing wen assumed office in May 2016.
On February 7 Cambodia a close ally of china banned Taiwanese
flag out of respect for one china policy. Cambodia have recently deported
Taiwanese fraud culprits to mainland china for the same reason. Many other
countries including Kenya and Malaysia have followed suit. Frustration of
Taiwanese government and call for dropping one china policy is on a rise.
According to one china policy Taiwanese government claims to be the sole
representative of whole of china including mainland, and Chinese government
claims Taiwan to be its breakaway province. But Taiwanese claim have been
recognized by only 21 small nations spread across developing world.
Most of these nations are supporting Taiwan just to get technology
and aid for their development. China has been wooing them with promises of huge
investments which Taiwan can never match , This situation have led to these
smaller states asking for more and more from Taiwan. Recently the tiny island of
Sao Tome and Principe switched its recognition from Republic of china (Taiwan)
to Peoples Republic of china. The government of So Tom and Prncipe,
however, with excessive financial difficulties, and demands beyond those the ROC
could meet, has ignored 20 years of friendly diplomatic relations, playing both
sides of the Taiwan Strait while holding out for the highest bidder. The ROC
regrets the So Tom and Prncipe governments abrupt and unfriendly decision,
and condemns this action, said the Taiwanese government in statement reacting to
the event.
United States of America had switched the recognition from Taiwan to china
back in Nixon era but the diplomatic and military support for Taiwan continued.
Many have speculated on the reversal of one china policy under incoming trump
administration especially after trump took call from Taiwanese president braking
years of tradition. But recently after a call with Chinese president Xi jinping
Trump have reiterated commitment to one china policy. It remains to be seen
what will be the future of Taiwan as the world is undergoing rapid changes.
Chinese government have become more and more aggressive in their attempts to
isolate Taiwan and vowed to take back the breakaway province if there is any
change in status quo. In a scenario of independence referendum how will china
react remains the million dollar question.
