BLUE ECONOMY : ISSUES AND CHALLENGES IN INDIA

ABSTRACT
Blue economy is a concept that simultaneously encourages social inclusion, environmental
sustainability, strengthening of maritime ecosystem, transport governance as well as economic
growth and development. It is founded upon a systems approach, wherein renewable and
organic inputs are fed into sustainably designed systems to fuel blue growth. The blue
growth addresses the problems of resource scarcity and waste disposal, while delivering
sustainable development that enhances human welfare in a holistic manner. Due to human
activities like overfishing, extraction of non-living resources, sewage pollution, trade and
commerce etc by this ocean has been polluted, there is loss of habitat and bio-diversity, climate
change etc.

The Study of Blue Economy includes reframing the oceans as Development spaces that are
subject to spatial planning and how that planning is used to integrate conservation, sustainable
use, oil and mineral wealth extraction, bio prospecting, sustainable energy and marine transport.
It will be helpful in incorporating the value of oceans into economic decision making. The study
covers prioritizing the uses of seas to benefit people, alleviate poverty, generate employment and
promote equity. By studying Blue Economy we will able to understand how to improve national
law and governance mechanisms. This study also focuses on how Blue economy helps in
designing framework for sustainable development.
