DISCOURSE COMMUNITY 2

Managerial Obstacles and Operations

Introduction

It is amazing to comprehend what it takes for an organization/ businesses to thrive in a

competitive market place. These business institutions can be viewed as discourse communities;

the reason being that they require certain daily objectives, and multiple factors, in order to

function. One institution that exemplifies this way of thinking is Subway. The Subway franchise

requires that certain daily objectives are to be met, and there are many dynamics that help it

function as a profitable discourse community. Subway must be able to practice therapeutic

intercommunication amongst its workers, be able to allocate the appropriate number of

competent staff in order to reach daily goals, and must have specific/ necessary daily objectives.

We shall discuss how all these factors relate Subway to the category of discourse communities;

included will be information to provide that a healthy workplace is a happy/ profitable

workplace. First, we review how Subways daily set of work goals relates to discourse

communities.

Common Work Goals

For a business to profit daily, it must illustrate/ show daily tasks, or goals, that must be

accomplished. This is exactly one characteristic of a discourse community that Subway follows.

According to literature, a discourse community is one that has an agreeable, or common, set of

public goals (Swales, 1990, p. 471). What this means is there are known objectives that are in a

community for it to be functional. Maintaining/ having a food handlers card, ensures that

the employee is knowledgeable in all food safety precautions. Customer service appropriate

according to the situation, for example if a lady comes in whos is in a rush and the worker

knows that they have to work a little faster than usual to appropriate to the needs of the customer

that is in a rush to leave compared to a customer that is there with no hurry. There is also the

washing of hands when a Subway employee leaves the restroom, work station, and/ or touches

an extremity which ensures that there is no cross contamination of any sort. Now we shall

discuss how intercommunication can be beneficial to a discourse community.

Intercommunication among Members

Next we see the importance of fostering therapeutic intercommunication not only benefits

a discourse community but also a business. According to Batagan (2006), The

intercommunication of projects in a portal represents a paradigm for project management

everything that reflects of institutions activity (p.84). Proper communication amongst members

in an institution/ all working members reflect on how well it functions. Regarding the discourse

community of Subway communication between workers shows how well the franchise is run.

Management is responsible for communicating any changes in regulations, dress codes, or

procedures at a punctual manor to the staff in order to prevent any unnecessary mishaps from

occurring. Finally we will discuss how an appropriate number, competent staff benefits discourse

communities/ businesses.

Worker Competence and Preparedness

Lastly a discourse community functions appropriately when there is a suitable number of

members/ workers to carry out daily activities and that the workers are competent in the work

they must accomplish. In other words a franchise like Subway must allocate the proper number

of workers to carry out daily duties that the franchise requires. Furthermore, these workers must

be knowledgeable of what their daily duties require for them to be completed correctly, for

example there should always be at least three employees present, one is to prepare the food

needed throughout the day, another for cashiering, and the last to be the sandwich artist to

prepare food for customers and clean the store.

Conclusion

In conclusion, we see how there are many similarities between a discourse community

and a business franchise like Subway; these like comparisons explain/ show that Subway can be

seen as a particular discourse community. Through reviewing the similar characteristics, such as

set of daily goals, therapeutic intercommunication, appropriate staffing, and worker competence,

we see how Subway functioning as a discourse community allows it to be a top competitor in the

food franchise market place. The franchise Subway may not know that it runs as a discourse

community, but, by seeing how utilizes methods of a discourse community, it is a continued

viable franchise
