eleven year old kid who was
bored as hell, and a dead frog.
I saw him make a bow in the
woods and he shot a frog, said
Kolby Hanley, second-year MSE
and professional archer sanc-

chery Association (NFAA). And
then he ate the frog. I thought
that was the coolest thing ever
and being bored as hell, I went out

into the backwoods and started
making bows out of little saplings
based on the episode. But Ive nev-
er killed an animal with a bow.
The Survivorman episode
made quite an impact, spark-
ing a passion that led to months
and months of making bows,
until Hanley went to the local
archery range to start training
with a standard hunting bow.
Before coming to Tech as a
second-year transfer student,
Hanley began his archery career
through the Junior Olympic Ar-
chery Development (JOAD) pro-
gram. It was the first sport I was

pretty good at and I could stand
out among other people, he says.
Over the past three sum-
mers, however, Hanley found a
new home at the Archery Learn-
ing Center in Snellville, GA,
forty minutes east of Tech. He
has been using the Center as a
hub for participating in nation-
al and international competi-
tions and has found tremendous
support through the program.
My main role model is George

owner of the Archery Learn-

When grocery stores are miles away,
eating your portion of healthy fruits
and vegetables can seem like an unat-
tainable goal. The Georgia Tech com-
munity garden aims to not only pro-
vide a way to get these nutrients but
also bring people together through
common interests of gardening
and sustainability.
The community garden, located
adjacent to the Instructional Center,
includes several long plots for garden-
ing, a hand-built shed for tools, com-
posting bins and lots and lots of love.
About ten students can be found out
working early on Saturday mornings at
least once a month.
We thought it would be a really
great place for us to gather and have
fun growing organic produce, where
people know they can go to learn about
sustainability in a nice environment,
said Clare Trively, first-year CS and
Vice President of Students Organiz-
ing for Sustainability. A lot of times
sustainability is forced down peoples
throats, and I think thats part of the
reason people are a little turned off
by it.
Trively says that working in the
garden is a great way to destress after
a long week, as well as an opportunity
to get service hours for Greek life or
service organizations. On a given work
day, around ten students can be found
getting their hands dirty in the garden.
As an initiative started years ago by
Students Organizing for Sustainability
(S.O.S.), the garden has been slowly
but steadily growing. Currently, the

An April 4 attack on rebel-held
town Khan Sheikhoun in north-
ern Syria was confirmed on April
11 to have utilized sarin gas.
Autopsies conducted on three
of the roughly 90 people killed
in the attack found traces of the
nerve agent in blood and urine,
as was announced by Turkish au-
thorities. The Syrian government,
headed by President Bashar Al-
Assad, has denied allegations that
they were behind the chemical
weapons attack, and stated that
their air force had in fact attacked
a rebel arsenal which was storing
chemical weapons.
The Russian government,
which has frequently backed Syr-
ia, has also denied that its ally had
orchestrated the attack and has
stated that the Syrians were recep-

Sustainability office holds sessions on strategic plan

Over the last two weeks, the
Office of Campus Sustainability
has held seven different open of-
fices in order to gather communi-
ty feedback on the Strategic Plan
for Sustainable Practice, which is
nearing the end of its March to
mid-April review phase.
We want to ensure that this
campus is here for another 150
years, said Anne Rogers, associ-
ate director of the Office of Cam-
pus Sustainability.
So we need to do that by be-
ing visionaries about where our re-
sources come from, our risks, our
challenges, our weaknesses, and
our opportunities to ensure that
we dont face economical, social or
environmental issues that prevent
Tech from prospering.
The current draft of the Stra-
tegic Plan for Sustainable Practice
divides sustainability efforts into
five key areas: energy and emis-
sion, community and culture,
water, built environment and ma-
terials management.
Each of the key areas have
their own vision and goals. For
energy and emissions, the vision
is to reduce dependency on fossil
fuels and increase carbon neu-
trality; for water, it is continuing
conservation efforts; for materi-
als managing, it is striving to be
a Zero Waste Campus; for built
environment, it is fostering safe
and efficient operations; for com-
munity and culture, it is inviting
collaborative enthusiasm for sus-
tainability.
The Strategic Plan, anticipated
to be approved by administration
this summer, is separated into
near-term goals to be completed
by 2020 and long-term goals to be
completed in ten years.
In the interim before 2027,
there will be annual prog-
ress reports and a review ev-
ery 2-3 years to ensure the plan
is on track. The Strategic Plans

made in its 2009 Climate Action
Plan (CAP), which itself was man-
dated after Tech signed the Amer-

Plan outlined a 15 percent reduc-
tion of greenhouse gas emissions
by 2020, 40 percent reduction
in emissions by 2040 and car-
bon neutrality by 2050, all com-
pared against the 2007 baseline
of 325,066 million British Ther-
mal Units.
A Spring 2013 report by Sinan
Sinharoy projected that if Georgia
Tech conservation efforts contin-
ued on a linear projection, only
50 percent of emissions would be
reduced by 2050.
This means that in order to
achieve the long-term goals out-
lined in the Climate Action Plan,
the Institute will have to acceler-
ate its reduction of energy con-
sumption and emissions.

and staff by 2027.
Other notable long-term goals
(to be achieved by 2027) across
the four other categories include
plans to reduce water consump-
tion by 50 percent, diverting 75
percent of campus waste from
the landfill and ensuring all new
building projects meet third-party
green building criteria (such as
LEED certification).
Encoded into the Strategic
Plan is the effort to keep the Tech
community involved in campus
sustainability plans through data
transparency as well as linking
sustainability research and cur-
riculum into campus operations.
Rogers and her colleagues
stress the importance of engaging
the Tech community to actively
work on incorporating sustainable
practices into their daily lives.
As it relates to sustainability,
theres a lot that we can do al-
ready. Theres a lot of technology,
in terms of advancing projects,
said Sarah Neville, sustainability
coordinator at the Office of Cam-
pus Sustainability.
A lot of the time, the limiting
factor is really the people factor
and how invested are people in
these solutions.
How invested is the student
body in changing the practice?
How invested are staff? This plan
is really about bringing all of that
energy to a focus, Neville said.
The draft of the Strategic Plan
for Sustainable Practice can be
found on the Campus Sustain-
ability website with means to get
involved with its further develop-
ment. The final feedback sessions
took place on April 14, but the
Office of Sustainability is reach-
able via sustain@gatech.edu.

Study released on economic segre-
gation; Atlanta ranks in top 100

A new study indicates that At-
lanta is one of the most economi-
cally segregated cities in the U.S.
The study, conducted by the
Urban Institute and titled The
Cost of Segregation: National
Trends and the Case of Chica-
go, 19902010, utilized demo-
graphic data from 1990 to 2010
and specifically examined the re-
lationships between race, income
and de facto segregation for nu-
merous American cities.
Atlanta ranked 38th out of
the top 100 cities analysed in
the report in economic segrega-
tion, which is a phenomenon in
which people of similar economic

Institute indicates that it is one of the most economically stratified areas in the United States.

was again the least segregated
metro area in these two categories
however, the Atlanta Journal-
Constitution reported in their ar-
ticle on the research that Eugene
is 85 percent white and less than 1
percent black.
The report frames this data
analysis within the context of
prospective economic benefits to
greater integration. The report
finds that more economically and
racially inclusive regions tend
to have higher black per capita
and median household incomes,
higher degrees of education, lower
homicide rates and higher overall
life expectancies.

power in sporadic bursts since a
transformer servicing Tech cam-
pus caught fire the night of Friday,
April 9.
Power issues were reported
by residents of the North Av-
enue Apartments (NAA) complex
when power outlets and lights be-
gan to turn off or work sporadi-
cally. Outages continued through
the week across east campus,
spreading on Tuesday, April 11 to
central campus.
Among the buildings without
power for some period of time
were the Smithgall Student Ser-
vices Building, also known as
the Flag Building, the Student
Center, the Ferst Center and the
Clough Undergraduate Learning
Commons.
NASA RESEARCH
On March 17, the National
Aeronautics and Space Adminis-
tration (NASA) announced that
a multidisciplinary research team
led by Tech faculty will be the re-
cipient of funding as part of their
Solar System Exploration Re-
search Virtual Institute (SSERVI).
The Tech team is led by Dr.
Thomas Orlando, a professor in
the School of Chemistry and Bio-
chemistry in Techs College of

Sciences. Orlandos team, known
as the Radiation Effect on Vola-
tiles and Exploration of Asteroids
and Lunar Surfaces (REVEALS)
team, focuses on two primary
themes: understanding how radia-
tion and micrometeorites interact
with airless bodies like the moons
of Earth and Mars and improv-
ing human health and safety
during space exploration by devel-
oping and testing new materials
for use in extraplanetary manned
missions.
The REVEALS team includes
several Tech faculty, including
Orlando, from multiple schools
within the institute. Doctors Phil-
lip First and Zhigang Jiang from
the School of Physics are on the
research team, as well as Dr. Peter
Loutzenhiser from the School of
Mechanical Engineering.
They are joined by Dr. James
Wray and Dr. Carol Paty from the
School of Atmospheric and Earth
Sciences, Dr. John Reynolds and
Dr. Joseph Perry from the School
of Chemistry and Biochemistry
and Dr. Jud Ready of the Georgia
Tech Research Institute.
One of the stated goals of the
REVEALS team is to produce
a device or suit material which
would allow astronauts to receive
radiation information in real-
time, allowing them to make bet-
ter decisions about their safety in
airless environments. The material
would also ideally provide bet-
ter protection against radiation
and would be able to used to coat
off-planet habitats in addition to
space suits.
The REVEALS team has re-
quested a budget of $5.5 million,
to be spent over five years. Tech
will be joined by the Univer-
sity of California, Davis, Jackson
State University, the University
of Notre Dame, the University of
Central Florida, the Florida Space
Institute and the Johns Hop-
kins University Applied Phys-
ics Lab for work with the
REVEALS team.

Currently at Tech, first-semester fresh-
men are the prime focus of Greek orga-
nizations during recruitment. These stu-
dents are just beginning college and are
experiencing academic and social changes
in their transitions. They also have the least
information about Greek organizations
and their practices, a fact which has been
used to the benefit of these organizations.
Appealing to freshmen during rush is
not reflective of the time commitment
necessary to become an official member
of the organization. Only once individu-
als pledge are they burdened with many
jobs and time-consuming responsibilities.
These may range from simple chores to
memorizing reams of information to other
forms of quasi-hazing, which freshmen are
not completely aware of. In conjunction
with their course loads, this may cause un-
due psychological stress.

Research Fair
The first ever Undergradu-
ate Research Fair was held this
past Tuesday in the Klaus Atri-
um. The event was largely a
success, with a number of labs
from fields and majors across
the spectrum being represent-
ed. Undergraduate Research
Ambassadors were available
for questions before and after
the Fair. The event will be fol-
lowed by the Undergraduate
Research Symposium, which
is set to occur next Tuesday.
Puppies at Campanile
As part of their philan-
thropic efforts in conjunc-
tion with Greek Week, the
fraternity Alpha Epsilon Pi
and the sorority Alpha Phi
provided the opportunity to
pet or otherwise interact with
puppies near the Campanile
for a small fee of five dollars.
The event took place this past
Tuesday, and the contributions
were split between the char-
ity Furkids and the Alpha Phi
Foundation.

I, like most other people out
there, am painfully embarrassed
of my middle school years. My
head sported a permanent bowl-
cut, I spoke to my girlfriend
exclusively through AOL mes-
senger and my internet presence
consisted solely of a tricked out
MySpace page that blared Green
Days American Idiot to anyone user-submitted videos. And it
unfortunate enough to visit.
When MySpace died, it was
not due to a loss of interest in so-
cial media. Users still wanted a
way to connect with their friends,
they had just found a better plat-
form in the burgeoning Facebook.
So goes the cycle of internet
websites; one day might be spent
as one of the most visited websites
in the world, and the next as a bar-
ren cesspool of awkwardly-named
indie bands.
But this is not always the case.
Sometimes, before a suitable re-
placement is found, a website will
go fully nuclear and implode on
itself, a regrettable process which
usually ends up disrupting the en-
tire online economy in the after-
math. This economy of websites
and users, in one way or another,
always ties back to online search

early days, YouTube has grown
into a veritable media powerhouse
that pumps billions of dollars into
the pockets of content producers
every year.

I traveled extensively as a child. I

Now, traveling by plane is a
miserable chore. I get to the air-
port early to make it through se-
curity and then spend extra time
waiting at the gate drinking a $4
water because I have never once
remembered to bring a reusable
water bottle. My carry-on is ex-
cessively heavy because I am mis-
trustful of leaving my laptop or
my camera in my checked bag.
Traveling used to be a luxury; now
it is a burden.
After 9/11, airlines took a sig-
nificant hit. Because of an increase
in security costs and a decrease in
customers, Congress created the
Air Transportation Stabilization
Board, which gave out $10 bil-
lion in loans to struggling airline
companies. Flight attendants and
airline employees suffered signifi-
cant layoffs and pay cuts. Today,
the three top airline companies
only pay flight attendants once
the cabin door is closed because of
negotiations that took place in the

the mercy of the companies that
pay them.
Why is that an issue? It boils
down to the new reality of per-
sonalized advertising. Everything
we do on the internet is used to

tual people tasked with monitor-

to match advertisements with
content and search queries, de-

go in your recommendations and

personalized advertisements will

and began charging for checked

the economys recovery and record
low oil prices, the savings have not
been transferred to the customer.
Baggage fees and expensive food
are still the norm for most airlines.
Airlines also have more influ-
ence than ever over the customer.
Captains and flight attendants
have an incredible amount of
power. They can land a plane or
refuse a passenger entry because
of a perceived threat. Airlines like
United also regularly over-book
their flights because they count
on a certain number of people not
showing up. While this practice
is not completely unethical, air-
lines must be held accountable
for their actions.
Generally, the solution is to
offer high-value vouchers to get
people to give up their spot. When
bribery does not work, the airline
may select people who will not
board. In return, the passengers

In the past month, major
heavyweight advertisers like Pep-
si, Starbucks, Walmart and GM
have all pulled ads from the plat-
form in response to a Wall Street
Journal article exposing the flaws
in YouTubes advertising methods.
In the story, writer Jack Nicas
explains that advertisements from
companies, including those previ-
ously mentioned, have been dem-
onstrated to show up attached to
videos featuring less than savory
content, such as endorsement of
racist, sexist and violent acts.
This new advertiser boycott has
made a sizeable dent in Googles
wallet, which has in turn affected
the ability of many content cre-

United claimed they needed
four people to give up seats so their
employees could travel to Louis-
ville for a different flight. Rather
than working out a solution in the
terminal, they allowed passengers
to board. United also only offered
$800 to passengers; they could
have easily offered more so some-
one with a more flexible schedule
would have given up their seat.
By trying to cut corners, Unit-
ed ended up costing themselves
much more. They treated the man
who refused to give up his seat as a
criminal and had him removed by
law enforcement. United breached
their own contract of carriage by
demanding a paying customer
leave his seat for non-paying em-
ployees. Based on Uniteds con-
tract, they can only deny some-
one a seat for oversold flights.
That flight was not oversold, and
the man was not denied board-
ing but rather ripped out of his
seat by thugs.
Airlines need to realize that
treating a customer with respect
should not be viewed as an incon-
venience but an obligation. We
pay for a service and while they
are not required to provide com-
fort, they do have to treat people
with dignity. I understand that
airlines need a certain amount of
control for safety but they can-
not continue to treat people with
contempt. Using excuses and call-
ing customers disorderly does
not justify beating them. While
airlines can charge whatever they
want, people will react when
they do not receive what they
paid for. And calling in hench-
men to deal with them is never an
appropriate response.

a viable and ubiquitous replace-
ment for the advertising platform,
online user-created media could
be in serious danger.
Unless Google refines its ad-
vertising policy, which the com-
pany has claimed it is doing,
YouTube will continue to suffer at
the expense of its user base. In the
meantime, several online content
producers, such as the creators of
the popular podcast FunHaus,
have already expressed uncertain-
ty in their financial futures.
For people like me who cant
do math or science or anything
that can guarantee financial sta-
bility, that is a scary thought.

School is generally char-
acterized by a large amount
of learning of a large num-
ber of things. However, in
my estimation there are few
subjects of which knowl-
edge is lost as quickly as that
of the foreign language.
Whether it be Spanish,
French or even German
that one learned in school, I
would be willing to bet that
few will remember enough
of the material to interact
with native speakers in any
meaningful way by the time
they have reached college.
Is that bad? Yes, but only
in the sense that the time
spent bothering to learn
the language prior in life
has now been made retro-
actively useless. It has been
wasted in the same sense
that time spent preparing
for the end of the world in
December of 2012 was.
This is not to say that
learning a new language
is always a waste of time.
However, I would contend
that there should not be an
oppressive push to instill
such knowledge for solely
knowledges sake.
Obviously, there is in-
herent value in possessing
skills like the ability to con-
verse in another language.
But if those skills are not
actively used, they deterio-
rate like any others.
In a sense, if you do not
have an immediate plan to
travel to Puerto Rico for a
while or are not considering
moving to France, the abil-
ity to speak in a new lan-
guage is going to be prac-
tically useless. It is much
more likely that, instead of
being able to make use of
the information you spent
possibly years cramming
into your brain, you will
slowly and sadly forget how
to speak in anything but
your native tongue that you
actively use each day.
So should everyone just
speak whichever language
their parents know and not
bother learning anything
else? Certainly not. But lan-
guage learning should be
for a specific purpose, not
just because. For example,
if your work requires you to
relocate to Brazil, learning
to speak Portuguese should
be a high priority on your
to-do list.
On the other hand,
if you have ambitions of
someday travelling all
over Russia, maybe you
shouldnt worry so much
about learning the language
with haste. People gener-
ally already have enough to
worry about in their daily
lives as is; pressure to figure

Weighing the benefits of learning a new
language with the innate hurdles and challenges
out a new language doesnt
need to be tacked on a lot of
the time.
In essence, one should
have a clear plan of action
to go along with a quest to
learn a new language. The
fact is that if you do not
have any feasible way to
make use of language skills
once you learn them, they
will quickly be lost. But you
need not wait forever for
a transfer to China if you
wish to learn Mandarin for
some reason.
Another option in that
circumstance would be to
track down someone in
your life that already speaks
the language and persuade
them to chat with you in
that tongue. Making a new
friend for this reason would
only create a double-plus
situation for you.
So if you wish to learn a
new language, more pow-
er to you. We need more
culturally-aware folks in
the world today, and lan-
guage is one thing that
can serve to expose peo-
ple to different ideas and
ways of thinking.
Just make sure you have
a way to sustain the knowl-
edge that you take time to
embed in your brain. Oth-
erwise, the hard work might
as well be time spent read-
ing comics or painting the
sidewalk blue.

Despite this, English is
designated as more impor-
tant in the country that
should by many measures

versity, and the language has
since gained a foremost pres-
ence in commerce, science
and diplomacy.
Englishs position as the
common language deprives
many English-speakers the
enrichment associated with
learning an additional lan-
guage, serving as an excuse
for the shortsighted strategy
of relying on other counter-
parts in order to get by in
the world.
Language is key to un-
derstanding culture, and
multilingualism broadens a
perspective that our global
society increasingly needs.
Yet learning another lan-
guage is repeatedly neglect-
ed in favor of science and
math, where such a lethar-
gic attitude would be much
more irregular.
Students at Tech seem
more apt to learn a pro-
gramming language than a
world language, even when
that language is the French
language of love. Such is
the case across the coun-
try, where foreign language
programs are becoming
less popular in educational
systems. This cultural defi-
ciency may not necessarily
mean that people think lan-
guage education is useless
it is just that they think
it is impossible.
Learning another lan-
guage changes the entire
paradigm through which
one communicates with
others. It offers a certain
exposure to alternate types to maintain, but so are the

what it is at the moment.

Furthermore, economic
relationships are easier to
maintain when dealing with
countries whose language
is understood. The world
has capitalized on a multi-
lingual workforce, which
distinguishes bilinguals in
international business.
Language proficiency is
just as hard to build as it is
many other skills that Tech
students have, whether they
be learning programming
languages, figuring out ex-
actly how to use the Inven-

esoteric course material.
However, the true differ-
ence between any other skill
and fluency in another lan-
guage is the ability to order
a special meal in a restau-
rant you cannot do that
with linear algebra, chemis-

r/place was created by Reddit
administrators for April Fools
Day and provided a canvas on
which users with accounts could
place a single pixel in one of 16
colors every five minutes. What
originated as an amusing experi-
ment resulted in one of the most
extraordinary visualizations of
human nature ever created.
But in order to understand
the significance of r/place, one
must understand the Reddit
community. Since its concep-
tion, Reddit has proven to be
an extremely powerful tool in
collective action for causes good
and evil. In 2010, Reddit re-
sponded to Glenn Becks Rally
to Restore Honor by hosting a
just under $600,000 towards
the charity Donors Choose.
However, Reddit has also gained
notoriety for the existence of
its darker communities like r/
watchpeopledie, r/nazi and r/
beatingwomen2 that, while dis-
turbing, are allowed to continue
to exist.
With over one million active
subreddits to date, Reddit has
inadvertently created a single
website that serves as a micro-
cosm for the internet itself, rep-
resenting most all types of peo-
ples who use computers. This is
the raison detre of the website
and what makes r/place so mes-
merizing. In 72 hours, members
of Reddit fought for space on
the canvas, attempting to create
logos and write text represent-
ing online and real-world com-
munities, replicate art from the

Subreddits were formed for
the sole purpose of leaving their
mark on the canvas, rallying
support among members to de-
fend their territory or attack a
rivals. Techs own subreddit, r/
gatech, organized to create the

plagued with difficulties adjust-
ing to fluctuations in demand,
and the costs associated with
wind energy have led to some
of the highest electricity prices
in Europe, costing three-times
the nationwide average in the

gia Tech Climbing Club provides
many students with the opportu-
nity to enjoy the sport in a fun,
competitive and safe environ-

to create an environment in which
people can learn to enjoy climbing
while also pursing the sports more
competitive aspects.
The clubs mission is to create
a community of people who want
to learn to climb and those who
want to compete to come together
and to enjoy climbing, explained

At least, that is what I had heard
about the windowless imposing struc-
ture I pass when I buy groceries. I had
wondered about it, sure, but without
any real reason to visit, I was con-
tent with the true nature of the
Cheetah remaining a mystery.
With Taco Bell right across
the street, I always figured
I could get something
much more substantial
and almost as tasty with
the stack of ones in my
wallet.
One day, on my weekly trip
to stock up on saltine crackers and
store-brand orange juice, I noticed a
new sign outside of everyones favorite
gentlemens club. It read Hoops and
Hotties, two things that hadnt been
mixed since season one of Flavor Flavs
Flavor of Love.
Beneath it was something much
more titillating: the promise of a seven

That Friday, a friend and I made the three min-
ute journey to the establishment, kicking off what
proved to be one of the strangest days of my young
life. The entrance to the Cheetah was predictable

in the gift shop, a small
room full of lingerie and
various other items of
that nature.
While I counted
the disappointingly
low amount of ones in
my wallet, my friend
browsed through the
stores wares. Though she
had her eye on a particu-
larly sultry set of transpar-
ent heels, we opted to save
our money for whatever the
afternoon decided to throw
at us.
The smell of smoke long
preceded my entrance
into the main room itself,
which wasnt surprising
considering the vending ma-
chines sold Marlboros rather
than Milky Ways.
When I finally reached the
club area, I was met with several
sights that are familiar to any-
one who frequents Buckheads
bars: overpriced light beers,
an abundance of cigarettes
and a surreal mingling
of college students with
middle-aged men, clad in
suits.
As we squeezed our
way to the buffet, we
got a general sense of

Youre ready to pull a late-night

your water bottle, youve printed
out all of the review slides and
youve laid claim to a study spot.
When suddenly it hits you. Your
stomach growls and you realize
youre not going to be able to fo-
cus without having something
anything to eat.
If youre a freshman with a
meal plan, while you may have
unlimited meal swipes left, youre
probably out of dining dollars by
this point in the semester. How-
ever, thanks to an SGA initiative,
theres a new option.
Between April 3 and May 3,
the pilot program Late Night
Bites will be available to students
with a meal plan. Students can use
a meal swipe to get either Chick-
fil-A or Panda Express in the Stu-
dent Center between 9 p.m., and
midnight. The meal must have a
value of less than $7.50.
Students have been supportive
of the program, with the line for
Panda Express on the first night
point in the evening.
Sanskriti Rathi, first-year CS,
heard about the program through
a Facebook post.
I think its a really good idea,
especially for freshman as theyre
stuck with unlimited meal swipes
for a year and being able to use
them for good food other than the
boring dining hall stuff is really
nice. Rathi said she plans to use
the meal swipes for fast food at
least twice a week. Maybe more
sometimes.
Amira Abadir, third-year ME
was excited to try out the new pro-
gram the first night it was avail-
able. She heard about it because
someone posted a picture of the
poster up in the Student Center in
a GroupMe shes part of. Getting
in line at 8:55 p.m., she waited 40
minutes to get her meal from Pan-
da Express. Since then, she says
lines have improved.
In theory I think its awesome
because late night dining options
are limited to the outsides of cam-
pus, which leaves out the whole
late-night study crowd in Clough
and the library. In practice, I think
once the hype of it dies down and
the lines get shorter, this will be a
great option for people with meal
plans! Abadir said.

ChBE, hasnt yet tried out the
program though she wants to.
Ive heard the lines are long.
Some have different opinions
on traffic in the Student Center.
The long lines are not really
an issue since its similar to those
during lunchtime hours in the
regular day. I do not see any need
for improvement, said Stephen
Beasley, first-year AE.

painted wood, as well as a fence in
anticipation of future bee hives to
be added.
Trively hopes that new picnic
tables will make the space inviting
and a more obvious place for stu-
dents to spend time hanging out
or studying by the community
garden.
A lot of people dont actually
know that its there, says Trively.
S.O.S. has rather ambitious
plan to expand the community
garden over the next few years.
Students in the future could po-
tentially enjoy a greenhouse and
other larger projects that would
utilize the resources and technol-
ogy that Tech can provide.
Funding for continuing im-
provements and work on the gar-
den comes from both the Serve
Learn Sustain initiative on cam-
pus and the Student Government
Association.
As of this semester, S.O.S. has
a new executive board of first years
who were chosen to take over the
group, all of whom are passionate
about the environment and sus-
tainability.
I lived in Scandinavia for two
years. Over there, the attitude to-
wards sustainability is a lot more
serious, Trively said. When I
came back, I was still really pas-
sionate about it and I wanted it to
be more of a practiced thing.
The garden isnt all flowers and
trees; the group grows organic
foods that they use in their diets.
We usually get lots of upper-
classmen on the workdays, and
they want to use the food in their
kitchens, Trively said.
The group is always looking for
new ideas for what to grow, and
is excited to welcome interested
individuals or groups to join their
work days. They make a deal with
their attendees help garden or
help with other projects, and in
return, take home the literal fruits
of their labor.
Small plots of the garden are
also available for individual or
group use, and a few married
couples in the Tech community
already take advantage of this.
In addition to their work with
the garden, S.O.S. tries to raise
awareness about everyday sustain-
ability issues. Last semester, they
tabled on Skiles Walkway and
handed out free Blue Donkey cof-
fee grounds and reusable K-Cups.
Students lay bricks down to create a wall around the garden on a sunny day. The Georgia
Tech Community Garden is located on the IC lawn and recruits anyone willing to garden.
Their biggest commitment and
passion, however, seems to remain
with the garden. The community
garden really does function like
the heart of our organization,
Trively said.
This semester, S.O.S. is or-
ganizing a group of students to
attend the March for Science At-
lanta, a celebration and support
of science on April 22 for Earth
Day. Their goal is to incorporate
sustainability into as many parts
of campus as they can and show
easy ways to incorporate it into
peoples lives.
If you walk up to us and just
say that youre interested in gar-
dening, we will just be excited
that youre there, Trively said.
Honestly, it means the most to
us that people just want to come
and learn.

ties was a March Madness special,
with the Cheetahs numerous
TVs showing the games and its
numerous dancers representing
the 64 teams in the tournament.
There were girls on tables, girls on
the floor, girls on poles, girls on
chairs, girls on staircases and girls
practically everywhere you could
imagine. It was, as the emcee put
it, an asstravaganza.
Once we reached the folding
table that housed the buffet, we
were greeted by a woman in a Fal-
cons jersey.
Help yourself to anything on
the table, just dont forget to tip,
she told us cordially.
Confused, I tossed three of my
precious bills into a bucket next to
her and grabbed a suspicious look-
ing hot dog.
Strip club tipping etiquette was
still a mystery to me.
Food-in-hand, we made our
way to the bar, a fixture that ran
the length of the room attached to
a raised platform, the main stage.
On any other day this would
be prime seating, but during
Hoops and Hotties all attention
was directed to a smaller stage on
the far side of the room.
While college basketball
matchups droned in the back-
ground, pairs of dancers would
take to this smaller stage in a se-
ries of dance-offs, each woman
representing a different school in
the tournament.
Much like its basketball ana-
logue, this competitions was all
about the buckets; two buckets,
one for each dancer, were passed
around the crowd to collect the
tips that would ultimately decide
the winner.
These buckets were followed
shortly after by a clipboard. Earl
Lloyd Jr., son of the first black
player in the NBA, was petition-
ing for his father to be put on a
commemorative postage stamp.
Though I didnt know why he
decided to do so in a strip club,
I quickly signed my name before
throwing some money into a pass-
ing bucket labeled Khaleesi.
After an hour of watching these
competitions, three minute affairs
that showcased physics-defying
acts of athleticism, I decided that
my taste for female objectification
had been satiated for the day.
As my eyes got reacquainted
with sunlight, I was still asking
myself why I had given a three
dollar tip to a girl who had done
nothing but sit behind a table.
This led to a lengthy Google
lesson on strip club etiquette,
knowledge that I think every pa-
tron of a gentlemens club should
have in his repertoire.
Unbeknownst to me, the danc-

WREK held their annual ben-
efit concert, WREKtacular, there.
The show is also a celebration of
local, independently-produced
art and music, the kind that this
venue hosts on the regular.
On the average night, shows
like these might not see a high
turnout rate as local music is usu-
ally experimental and unpolished
and may not seem the most acces-
sible. However, on this Saturday,
the place was packed.
The lineup included Georgia
Techs own Root Locust, KayyP,
Vampire Stepdad, Bitter and
Deantoni Parks, who has been ris-
ing in popularity because of his
blend of electronic and hip hop
elements. The show brought an
eclectic variety of local talent to
the table and gave Tech students a
taste of the unique music Atlanta
has to offer.

Cold War Kids released their
newest studio album, L.A. Di-
vine, on April 7. The now widely
popular indie rockers maintain
their usual style on the album,
balancing a hard-driving blues
sound with powerful and emo-
tional lyrics. Fans of the band will
be pleased to know that they have
not drifted over to the pop side.
While there are some songs on the
album that are quite radio-friend-
ly, as there must be, the members
of the group make it clear that
they have no intention of turning
into a simple single factory.

The local arts scene may some-
times seem insular to those who
are not already a part of it. How-
ever, once a year, WREK Radio
offers Tech students a chance to
experience it. The radio station
prides itself in its airing of music
that they describe as atypical or
outside the cultural mainstream.
On their website, WREK claims
that they wish to use their status
as a college radio to bring these
forms of music into public con-
sciousness, and the annual con-
cert plays into that philosophy.
It opens the doors to Atlantas
underground scene for Georgia
Tech students, who can attend for
free. The community and atmo-
sphere there were just as impor-
tant as the art itself. Throughout
the night, the light effects re-
mained minimal. The only notice-
able dcor gracing the stage were
two cutouts of unicorns. The mu-
sic, however, was thriving.
WREK Radios own Victor
Pino was first on the lineup, per-
forming under the name Root
Locust. Pino is an Electrical Engi-
neering major at Tech, which does
not seem surprising considering
that the setup for his performance
on Saturday was designed and
built by him over the course of
two years. It consists of a modu-
lar system, which includes a pulse
generator and a shift register se-
quencer, so sounds play off inputs
to the system and work iteratively.
Root Locusts work is character-
istically DIY. The music itself,
composed of abstract electronic
melodies and sounds, was just as
impressive as the spectacle of his
handmade instruments on stage.
The rest of the night was filled
with equally strong performances.
KayyP rapped over synthesized,
well-produced beats, and her stage
presence and energy changed the
Nathan Willet records vocals in the studio. L.A. Divine
shines with multiple different musical styles and structures.
nights gears from a dreamy elec-
tronic haze to more charged and
upbeat. Her lyrics are introspec-
tive and soulful, and in a genre in
which women are sorely underrep-
resented, she holds her own as one
of Atlantas strongest rising hip
hop artists.
Vampire Stepdad brought their
brand of synthwave: a homage
to the music of 80s horror and
science fiction cinema, like that
heard in John Carpenters Hal-
loween themes with ethereal, ret-
ro synths. The performers stayed
true to the stepdad part of their
acts name too, staying in char-
acter throughout for a gimmick
that did not add anything to the
performance itself. Some of the
jokes about dating the audiences
collective mother could have been
dropped without losing any of the
80s cultural spirit that the artists
wished to capture.

Tone Fresh kept the atmosphere
lively with his mixes. With 30
years of DJ experience, he has per-
formed at bars and clubs around
the city. However, one thing that
he said sets events like WREKtac-
ular apart is that he is able to play
a more diverse range of music and
explore more experimental genres,
instead of the classic hip-hop he
usually plays.
All-female punk band Bitter
brought their style of garage-style
rock, which is simultaneously
loud, assertive and melodic. Lead
vocalist Maritzas voice is pow-
erful enough to hold together
noisy, grungy guitar riffs and
plodding drums.
Experimental drummer Dean-
toni Parks rounded up the set.
Parks incorporation of woozy
sounds and synths with the
thumping drums were the result
of him singularly working both

playing the drums and the other
on his sampler, Deantoni Parks is
an artist one needs to see live to
understand the work. The pump-
ing rhythm of the drums gives his
samples and electronic sounds an
acoustic, organic feel.
Like the artists that performed
before him, Parks proves that in
the underground music scene, the
artist is not only defined by their
music, but also by their tools,
their craftsmanship and the pro-
cesses through which the art is
created. At the end of the night,
the show was what one would ex-
pect from a lineup of skilled, local
talent pushing the boundaries of
their genres, with some fresh faces
from Georgia Tech in the crowd.
WREK was able to achieve, for
the most part, what they set out
to do: bring atypical, indepen-
dent music into the mainstream
consciousness this time by giving
in person rather than through the
airwaves.

Additionally, there is a comedic
scene where a character is con-
fused on what form of gendered
Japanese pronoun to use that does
not properly translate to English.
These distinctions do not translate
the English speaking viewer, but
they can be fun points to pick up
on if one knows a little about the
Japanese language.
This movie has received much
praise at home and abroad with
a nomination for an Oscar and
the title of the top grossing anime
movie in Japan. However, the ba-
sic concept of the film is nothing
new: two people switch bodies,
and shenanigans ensue.
However, Your Name avoids
clich by only using this trope as
a grounding point around which
the remainder of the plot quickly
evolves past. The honesty written
into the characters, their relation-
ships and their personal develop-
ment throughout elevate the mov-
ie past its cliched premise.

Less than two months ago,
Creole/Cajun food was given a
Vietnamese twist in Atlanta. Bon
Ton does what few New-Or-
leans-style restaurants do: they
serve seafood that just tastes great.
Co-owner Darren Carr, origi-
nally from London, owes the
Vietnamese flair to his world trav-
els. He also owned the previous
restaurant in the same location
across from Mary Macs, but he
decided it was time for a change
after 10 years. With co-owner
Erik Simpkins, Carr partnered
with Hieu Pham, an interior-de-
signer-turned-chef who brought
the similar concept Crawfish
Shack to Buford Highway.
Pham, whose parents are both
half-Vietnamese, wanted ready-
to-order seafood that was simple
and just taste[d] great. He said
that blending New Orleans and
Vietnamese cooking is not much
of a stretch. Because of the French
occupation of Vietnam and the
Big Easys French history, the two
cooking styles are rather similar.
Pham chose New Orleans sea-
food rather than another style be-
cause there are more ingredients
to play with that have a heat and
boldness in flavor. Additionally,

he has been cooking low-country
boils since he was 14, a staple of
NOLA family gatherings during
crawfish season.
Sourcing oysters, andouille
and bread from Louisiana, craw-
fish and blue crab from Biloxi,
and shrimp from Mexico (sweeter
than shrimp from the Atlantic),
the restaurant sources from multi-
ple suppliers to bring in the fresh-
est possible shellfish.
The Vietnamese twist on clas-
sic New Orleans dishes comes in
several flavors: fish sauce, chili
powder over cayenne pepper, five-
spice, lemongrass, kaffir lime leaf
and orange. It is a subtle twist,
though, never dominating. Many
of the Asian ingredients are part
of the boil, which is a blend of
flavors that is added to many of
the dishes.
Spices in the breading of the
fried oysters add some heat to the
Nashville hot oyster roll. Despite
Atlanta not being a coastal city,
somehow the oysters are wonder-
fully fresh, and the spice on the
charbroiled oysters is just right.

Mexico City is sinking. Resting
on an improperly managed aqui-
fer, the city is gradually sinking
into the Earth at a rate of around
3 feet a year. Along with the sur-
rounding area that makes up the
Valley of Mexico, Mexico City is
the focus of the film H2Omx.
The documentary explores the
way this ancestral heartland of
Mexico, which was the center of a
number of pre-Columbian civili-
zations including the Toltecs and
the Aztecs, is now struggling to
bear the weight of its residents.
Looking through personal and
population-based lenses, the film
explores water mismanagement in
Mexicos largest city and issues a
call to action to both the govern-
ment and the general populace. If
something is not done, the film
warns, the citys collapse is only
one of a number of terrible wa-
ter management issues that could

As the film reveals, the issue
lies in the citys origins. The Span-
ish conquerors sought to defy
Mother Nature by building Mex-
ico City in the middle of a series
of interconnected lakes that were
gradually drained in order to pre-
vent flooding.
The methods used by the his-
torical invaders continue to be
used today in order to maintain
the city, but these methods are no
longer sustainable as water levels
fall and more and more land is
subsidized to make room for the
citys rapidly rising population.
New urban neighborhoods re-
quire water to be pumped from
hundreds of kilometers under-
ground or shipped from far away.
Vendors profit off the delivery of
fresh water as the populace strug-
gles to access a basic necessity
for survival.
The film attacks this idea from
two fronts. Much of the content
of the film is focused on an indi-
vidual scale. Following a Hidalgo
farmer, a water truck driver or a
pair of design entrepreneurs work-

ducers paradoxically highlight the
global relevance by zooming in.
Interspersed between these inter-
views and segments are stunning
aerial shots of the city. The heavily
polluted canal that weaves its way
down the sprawling metropolis
and the miles of concrete and tar-
mac that roll down the Mexican
plateau create a remarkable jux-
taposition that emphasizes how
severe of a problem the city faces.

While solutions exist, they
struggle to gain traction because
of a collective lethargy from the
government and populace. The
film seeks to remedy this attitude
by highlighting organizations like
the Isla Urbana that are helping to
install rainwater harvesting sys-
tems. Mexico City receives five
months of rain a year, but a lack
impossible for citizens to take ad-
vantage of it.
Other initiatives, such as those
seeking to empower a local data-
base of knowledge about water
management, are also mentioned.
However, it is made quite clear
that the issue still exists on a mas-
sive scale; therefore, current ef-
forts can only curb, rather than
fix, the problem.
H2Omx is an intelligently
constructed, thoroughly re-
searched documentary that ef-
fectively explores a serious issue
in a way that informs viewers.
Without taking sides, it presents a
compelling argument for action of
any kind and emphasizes that the
problem is one that has extensive
repercussions for all of Mexico.
As the capital and center of
much of the countrys commerce
and industry, Mexico Citys prob-
lems are the countrys problems.
As a whole, the film collectively
functions less as a manifesto and
more as a plea, depicting the
struggle of a city and a people for
water a basic human right.

The album opens with Love is
Mystical, a poppy song driven by
a simple but powerful keyboard
riff, and this song serves as the
lead single. The strength of the
track comes from the complexity
of the instrumental layering in the
song and Nathan Willetts power-
ful vocals. Together these factors
elevate the song from a standard
indie-pop clich to an album
defining single.
The next track, Can We Hang
On? is more of the same an-
other fast paced, well layered,
radio-friendly single driven by
David Quons keyboard and Na-
than Willetts soaring and diving
voice. While the subject of the
song, pondering the approaching
end of a relationship, is nothing
new, Willetts passionate vocals
and the changing tempo keep the
track fresh and exciting.
While the first two tracks are
solid songs, they are both predict-
able indie-pop songs; then the
singles stop, and the album truly
begins with the third song, So
Tied Up. Just as the listener be-
gins to tire of the bluesy style of
Can We Hang On? and Love short songs, Cameras Always
is Mystical, the album flips
to a more rhythmic soul style,
bringing in Bishop Briggs as a
guest vocalist.
So Tied Up layers a drum
and clapping rhythm over a key-
board rhythm to create a song
that, despite its fast pace, is not
overly forceful or angry, as the
groups more common blues
tracks can be.
The album continues in this
different tone with the next track,
Restless, which is slower than
the first three songs and features
a more optimistic vibe than most
of the Cold War Kids work. The
songs catchy lyrics are sure to
make it another popular single
from the album.
Like most albums, L.A. Di-
vine is front-heavy the singles
are stacked up at the beginning,
and, as a result, the rest feels
less polished.
In this case, however, the band
treats the meat of the album as
an opportunity to experiment,
to branch out and to try differ-
ent styles and sounds. One of the
most interesting tracks on the al-
bum is Luck Down, a gritty, raw
song that revives the garage rock
sound of bands like the Stooges of
the late 1960s. Luck Down is
placed immediately before Ordi-
nary Idols, which features a quick
tempo and a funky bass line. This
juxtaposition of styles is repre-
sentative of the eclectic mix of
sounds that comprises the body of
L.A. Divine.
The album ends with yet an-
other shift of tone as the group
adopts a much softer sound for
the last two tracks, Part of the
Night and Free to Breathe. By
concluding the album with these
tracks, the Cold War Kids remind
listeners that their music goes
deeper than the fast paced bluesy
singles that the album opens with.
One of the other interest-
ing features of the album is the
inclusion of three startlingly
On, Wilshire Protest and
L.A. River. The tracks break
up the monotony of the lon-
ger songs on the album, mak-
ing it more digestible and
creating natural divisions
between sections.
L.A. River, though only
about a minute long, is actually
one of the best tracks from the
album. The song concentrates
the blues-rock sound the band
is known for without all the in-
die-pop anger and tempo of the
groups singles. Left behind is
pure, sincere blues magic.
L.A. Divine is easily the
groups best album yet since ev-
ery song is refreshing. No band
can make the same song over and
over, and this album shows that
the Cold War Kids will not try to.

Super fans may have already
seen the film since it has been
available on several dubious web-
sites online. However, viewing
this specific film in theaters is a
worthwhile experience because
Your Name surpasses expecta-
tions with its cinematography
and scenery.
On the big screen, the gor-
geous colors of the movies signa-
ture meteor pops in the night sky,
and viewers can better appreciate
the dazzling country landscapes,
the urban cityscapes and the mar-
velously detailed backgrounds for
which director Makoto Shinkai
is so well known. Shinkai excel-
lently captures that wistful feel,
characteristic of many of his pre-
vious works, partly due to the jux-
taposition of these cityscapes and
sprawling countrysides, which are
always lit by the waning light of
evening.
Unfortunately, one problem
that this movie suffers from is its
somewhat sudden tonal shifts and
awkward pacing. The extensive
plot has some fairly clear chap-
ters. Each of these chapters has a
distinct mood, beginning cheery
and comedic and midway through
the movie becoming much darker

CRC hosts intramural basketball championship

From March 35, students
may have noticed that the CRC
basketball courts were closed.
That weekend, Tech hosted the
National Intramural-Recreation-
al Sports Association (NIRSA)
Championship Series Regional
Basketball Championship. NIR-
SA was founded in 1950 by rep-
resentatives from 11 Historically
Black Colleges and Universities
(HBCUs). Now, NIRSA holds in-
tramural tournaments in basket-
ball, flag football, soccer, tennis
and cricket for college students.
NIRSA also hosts regional and
national conferences centered
around increasing participation in
campus recreation programming.
The regional basketball tour-
nament featured both mens and
womens pool and bracket play
with teams representing colleges
from all over the southern United
States. Teams of at most 15 play-
ers first participated in pool play.
The top three teams in each of
the four-team pools and the top
two teams in three-team pools
advanced to a single-elimination
tournament.

chance to bring out a miracle
victory at the last minute against
North Carolina State. In its ninth
extra-inning game this season,
the team had no intention of sub-
mitting to defeat. Straight zeros
lined the board for the first six
innings before the Jackets picked
themselves up in the seventh in-
ning. Tech ended the drought
with three runs on four hits in the
seventh, tying the score with the
Wolfpack and earning an extra
chance at gaining an edge.
The teams traded runs in the
eighth and ninth innings, but
the Jackets gained the edge in the
tenth inning. The team outhit NC
State 14-4, and junior Emily An-
derson demonstrated tremendous
skill on the mound through all
ten innings.
Consistent hitting and pitch-
ing secured the first victory of the
weekend, but without consistent
movement around the bases, the
Jackets would be unable to rally
through the next two games of
the weekend.
Pushed by their victory, Tech
kicked off the second game with a
remarkable seven runs in the first
inning. By the fourth inning, the
jackets had lost their momentum.
They played through the last three
innings with only two hits and
no runs. A small rally in the last
half of the game could have com-
pensated for poor pitching earlier
in the contest. Game three was
plagued by the same inability to

the ACC. Pastner has been lib-
eral in his praise of the conference
throughout the season, using its
rigor as an unsuccessful argument
for Techs inclusion in the NCAA
Tournament. He even seeks to
pattern his program after that of
conference rival Notre Dame.
Theyve done a great job, he well to the Flats. And the Jackets,
said. They get some under-the-
radar guys that develop, that get
better, that improve. Theyve got
great shooters, they space the
floor, and [Notre Dame head
coach] Mike Brey is obviously one
of the elite coaches out there.
Pastner acknowledges that the
recruiting environment at an ACC
team like Tech is much different
than it was in his previous stint at
Memphis. While the Tigers were
a relatively big fish in the Ameri-
can Athletic Conferences small
pond, Pastner finds himself in the
opposite position in Atlanta.
This league is a monster, he
says with a laugh. There are no
nights off, and weve got to do a
great job a near-perfect job
on evaluations. And, of course,
it is difficult to evaluate players
when the game is so dynamic.

Curry, for example, has inspired a
generation of aspiring athletes to

take more three-point shots. And
an increasing focus on analytics
means that there are new perfor-
mance insights for teams to glean.
Its an evolving sport, and
youve got to stay ahead of the
curve, he said. Whether its
through technology or on [play-
ers] views on life, its constantly
changing day by day. Thats part
of us staying relevant as a staff.
One of the biggest changes
Tech basketball will endure this
offseason is the graduation of a
number of key players. Depend-
able starters and role players such
as Josh Heath, Quinton Stephens
and Corey Heyward will bid fare-
among the youngest teams in the
country, will have to find leader-
ship in a number of places.
One source would have seemed
exceedingly unlikely a year ago:
freshman guard Josh Okogie,
whose exciting on-court perfor-
mances will have to be matched
by his guiding hand off the court.
Hes going to be a key guy for
us to do what we need to do. We
need him to really step up that
leadership role. Hes going to be a
team captain, and hes got to take
advantage of that.
Josh Pastner is taking advan-
tage of the offseason to critique
everything. That includes himself.
Personally, I need to eat bet-
ter, he said. Professionally, I
need to keep growing as a coach.
I think I need to study the areas
where I felt we didnt have success
on the court. Did I not hold true
to something that was important
to me?
The answer is likely no.

played such an influential role in
that hes not only helped me to
be a phenomenal shooter, but hes
also helped me in my life tooto
get to tournaments, to give me
exposure. Hes always pushing
me too. I meet people who tell
me Im driven, people who dont
push me as much, but hes really
the only person who keeps poking
me to keep doing a little bit more.
Despite the proximity of
the Archery Learning Center
to Techs campus, Hanley was
often discouraged from ap-
plying as a transfer because
it was impossible to get in.
But defying seemingly for-
midable odds, Hanley applied
and received admission. The
transition was seamless; it felt
like it was meant to be, he said.
Hanley often practices with
Techs archery team, which meets
three times a week. Im shooting
a lot more than I used to at my
old school, just because its easier
with the Learning Center and
practice at Tech, said Hanley.
Im actually seeing an incline on
my skill since Ive gotten here.
On top of shooting at a profes-
sional level, Hanley is balancing a
rigorous curriculum, is currently
pursuing a position in undergrad-
uate research, and puts in thirty
hours a week, working nights
at his part-time job downtown.
An accomplished shooter in
many respects, Hanley won the
National Outdoor Championship
for two consecutive years, and the
National Indoor Championship in
2014, for which he made a perfect

Few college athletes arrive on
campus knowing that they will
be top performers on their team.
They certainly aspire to be there,
but rarely do they accomplish that
feat in their first year on Techs
campus. Junior mens tennis play-
er Chris Eubanks is one of those
few elite athletes.
In his first year at Tech he
played most of his matches in the
one slot, accruing a 7-11 record in
matches in a slot usually reserved
for seasoned veterans. His sopho-
more year he only played in the
top slot, going 21-2 in his matches
there and earning himself a bid in
the NCAA singles tournament.
When you meet Chris, his
demeanor and actions dont con-
vey the competitive spirit that
lies within. Standing at 67, the
lanky junior from Atlanta, Ga.
looks like he would be more likely
to be found on a basketball court,
but a simple conversation with
him changes that perspective. He
goes from bubbly describing a 6-1,
6-2 rout of Louisvilles Christo-
pher Morin-Kougoucheff the day
prior, to walking through what
he and the team should work on
if they hope to top the ACC and
the country.
Per Oracle ITA, Eubanks is
currently ranked No. 5 in the na-
tion in singles play. Additionally,
Eubanks has seen success against
other top players this season with
a win over No. 2 Petros Chryso-
chos of Wake Forest. Despite this,
Eubanks is sure of what he still
needs to improve upon, a crucial
trait for any player.

score on the last day of the compe-
tition, a personal accomplishment
in which he takes great pride.
But what Hanley believes
was the most significant mo-
ment at the National Indoor
Championship and in his ar-
chery career was when he was
approached by the head coach
of the Archery Learning Center.
Right after I had received my
big bowl on the podium, thats
when I met the head coach ... and
honestly, if I hadnt won National
Championship that year, I proba-
bly wouldnt be here, Hanley said.
Hanley hopes to continue
archery as long as he can. Ive
I think one of the main things
I have to improve on and that Ive
done a good job getting better at
is building my body, he said. Eu-
banks is currently listed as weigh-
ing 165 lbs., and one look at his
lanky frame confirms that. He
continued, Once you get to a cer-
tain level of tennis, all of the guys
can hit a forehand or a backhand,
its just about being able to do that
under pressure. That is both a
physical and mental obstacle that
must be overcome.
Mentally, Eubanks has had
more to deal with beyond just
his matches. While tennis is not
a traditional team sport with the

pretty much already decided its
one of those things that Im go-
ing to be doing for the rest of my
life theres something about
it that I just enjoy too much
and it makes me too happy to
not do it for the rest of my life.
Hanley describes archery as a
martial art, as a meditative type
of sport. Its almost like yoga in a
sense. It calms you down and mel-
lows you outIts made me more
self-aware, both mentally and
physically, just because it takes so
much body control in the form of
being still under high pressure.
Its made me perform better un-
der a high level in everything else
group competing towards one
goal together, leaders still emerge.
Despite that expectation, there
has not been much stress placed
on Eubanks due to the team being
so cohesive.
We have a really close knit
group of guys, and a very, very
close team, he said. We all chip
in at different times and assume
leadership roles; we have four guys
my year, we all of kind of know
when its our time to lead and take
on that responsibility.
As Eubanks continues to grow
at Tech, his talent has allowed
him experiences nationally and
beyond. The thing he values most

that Im doing, he added regard-
ing the advantages of his craft.
Hanley is currently experi-
menting with something dif-
ferent than the stereotypical
thirteen-hundred-people-shoot-
at-five-hundred-targets-at-the-
same-time type of archery, with a
new form known as 3D Archery.
3D Archery includes shoot-
ing at foam targets of animals
in the woods, with four or five
other people on the course.
He is currently training to
compete in World Trials this up-
coming June in hopes to make
the team that will travel to South
America for the World Cup.
about these outside experiences is
the perspective and motivation it
gives him.
I played in the US Open.
I played in the BB&T Atlanta
Open the past four years. Each of
these things shows me that I
have a lot of work to do to contin-
ue to improve if I want to be able
to play at those tournaments and
at that level more consistently.
This motivation is a hallmark of
many great athletes and leads Eu-
banks to wanting to play against
the highest level of competition.
I think, obviously the best,
would be able to play Roger Fe-
derer someday, he said when

FOOTBALL
On Monday, it was announced
that redshirt junior Matthew Jor-
dan would be missing the rest of
the Spring football season with
a foot injury. Jordan, the current
leading candidate for the vacant
starting quarterback position, is
the only quarterback at Tech who
has received a significant amount
of playing time.
Jordan will be unable to play
in the annual spring game, which
takes place on April 21.
BASEBALL
On Wednesday, April 13, USA
Baseball released its midseason
Golden Spikes Award watch list.
The award is given annually to the
best college player in the coun-
try. Bart is one of six underclass-
men, all of whom are sophomores,
named to the 40 man list. Bart
has landed himself in the race
through a sophomore campaign
built on hitting. He leads the team
with 11 home runs, 32 RBIs and a
.654 slugging percentage. Finalist
voting ends on June 23.

just any of the top guys, to be able
to see how far I am from be-
ing one of the best players in the
world. Hopefully I would put up
a pretty good fight and reassure
myself that Im not that far away.
That perspective gained from
professional tournaments com-
bined with his thirst for victory
comes to a head when discussing
what the team needs to do to win
the tough ACC tournament. The
No. 18 Jackets have been domi-
nant in the ACC, their only loss
coming (at the time of writing)
against No. 1 Wake Forest.
The biggest thing is weve just
got to close out, Eubanks said
plainly. On two courts, we had
two guys serving for their match-
es, if they just serve those matches
out we beat Wake Forest 4-1. I
think its just realizing its just re-
alizing and coming to grips with
the fact that we are one these very
good teams and we have to try
and continue to put that together
and show the rest of the country
that we belong here.
Finally, Eubanks looked at his
goals for the rest of the season.
My top goal is to win
NCAAs. I think if I can con-
tinue to progress and do the right
things that Ive been doing thats
a definite possibility. As the end
of the season draws near, there
are a number of distractions that
might push a player one way or
another. From finals approach-
ing to the competition intensify-
ing to fatigue building from the
accumulation of match play, it is
easy to lose sight of the goal. But
one thing is clear: Chris Eubanks
is peaking at just the right time to
make a run.

Josh Pastner looks ahead to Year Two.

The National Invitation Tour-
nament is over, and Tech basket-
balls season is officially finished.
That means an exhale, a reset and
the gradual run-up to the next
season already looming ahead.
Spend a few minutes with
mens basketball head coach Josh
Pastner and it might be fair to
wonder whether the season is over
at all. His phone buzzes time and
time again, vying for his attention
vainly. One call, then another.
Then a few more for good mea-
sure. Over the course of a 20-min-
ute conversation, Pastners iPhone
may well have blipped twenty
times and that might be a con-
servative estimate.
This is what the offseason looks
like for Pastner, his first in At-
lanta. That is, if you do not count
last years, which was a transition-
ary period for both Pastner, who
had to cut ties with Memphis, and
Tech, which had to move on from
incumbent Brian Gregory.
Yet the whirlwind pace
from scouting his own team to
identifying flaws in his coaching
to making in-house visits with re-
cruits suits Pastner, whose ten-
ure has been marked by nothing if
not energy. While he remains in-
tensely focused on the year ahead,
he cannot help but take pride in
his teams performance this year,
especially considering the low ex-
pectations placed on the group.
Three games stick out in my
mind, Pastner said. One was the
teams win at Virginia Comon-
wealth after losing two games in
a row early in the season. Pastner
has never endured a three-game
losing streak in his entire head
coaching career, and a victory in
a hostile environment prevented
exactly that.
The second was the teams
second-round NIT win over Bel-
mont, which set a team single-
season record for home wins. And
the last? A win against Pittsburgh
on Senior Day, a game that con-
firmed how far the Jackets had
come from seasons beginning.
For the type of year we had,
the success we had, the over-
achievement we had, to beat Pitt
on Senior Day, he says, was a
meaningful experience and one
hat provided the teams veteran
leadership with an appropriate

Softball finds bright patches amid rough season

Yet another softball season
draws closer to its end and once
again, it seems that the Jackets
have struggled competing away
from home. While homesickness
has cost them, Tech has still car-
ried some of the momentum they
developed last season onto the
field this year.
The Jackets got off to a rough
start, beginning the season far
from home at the Puerto Rico
Tournament and coming home
with a single victory out of six
match-ups. With nearly half the
line-up in their debut season,
some growing pains were to be
expected. Having more home
games in the schedule than last
year alleviated some of the pres-
sure on the ten freshmen, who
could focus better in the comfort
of friendly confines.
However, it has not been
enough to prevent road struggles
from affecting Techs standings.
More than half of the games the
Jackets have played out of state
have been losses. With only two
victories out of eleven match-ups
away from home this season, hope
for a chance at post season cham-
pionship competition is running
low. There is no time to rest and
certainly none to concede defeat,
but the chances of putting up a
fight in ACC play are waning for
Tech softball.
Second in the ACC, Boston
College will be the hardest match-
up left in the season for Tech. The
eagles will also be Techs chance
to turn around the season and
prove themselves as ACC com-
petitors. Its been two years since
the jackets competed in an ACC
championship and the jackets will
leave everything on the field in
their end of season scramble for a
chance at a championship spot.
The Jackets are well-versed in
the art of the last-minute scramble
this season. Nevertheless, if Tech
hopes to turn a chance at ACC
championship competition into
an ACC championship title, the
jackets will need to bring more
consistency onto the field in their
three final games than they have
all season.
Last-ditch efforts have not been
enough to reverse Techs consis-
tent difficulty reaching home plate
this season. After a dismal start
to the year, Tech rallied in the
fifth inning of their second game
against FSU. The scoreboard read
8-0 when the Jackets walked on to
offer a final effort. Tech loaded the
bases and earned three runs in the
fifth inning and four more in the
sixth. In the seventh inning, Tech
had little difficulty reaching base,
but its push fell short just before
home plate, only earning one run.
All eight of the runs tallied by
the team were earned by different
athletes.
Tech illustrated great talent
throughout the lineup through
the last three innings of the game,
but the team was nonetheless un-
able to scrap together a sufficient
performance to carry it to victory
over the Noles. The Jackets car-
ried that poor luck into their third
game of the weekend and left Tal-
lahassee with three losses.
