Exceptions and number formatting. File input/output using Stream classes. Implementation of
primitive data structures, including linked lists (all types), stacks, queues, and binary trees.
Advanced data manipulation using core classes. Introduction to multithreading, multimedia, and
networking.
Course Objectives:
After successful completion of this course, the student should have an:
1. Ability to implement a comprehensive object-oriented application
2. Ability to implement primitive data structures
3. Ability to use advanced library-based data structures
4. Ability to use exception handlers and generate error messages
5. Ability to implement file input/output
Textbook:
NetBeans 6.8 is used in class to develop and run Java programs. You may use any other IDE
you wish, however. For instructions as to how to download NetBeans 6.8, click here.
Program #1 – Write a program that allows two players to play Tic-Tac-Tow. It will display the
Tic-Tac-Tow board with the numbers from 1 to 9 in the 9 squares. It then asks Player X where
he wants to move. After Player X gives a move, the board is redisplayed. If there is a winner or
a draw, the program should say so and exit. If not, the program asks Player Y where he wants to
move. This process continues until there’s either a win by X or O, or a tie. You may assume that
the users input correctly.
Use a 2-dimesional array to hold the values of X and Y. No GUI is needed for this, although you may
use one if you wish.
Program #2 -
Write a program that allows a user to solve two linear equations in two unknowns. In general it will
solve:
ax + by = c and
d
x + ey = f
Note that these equations both are lines. Therefore their solution is either a single point, or it
could be that the two lines are the same, or the two lines are parallel. In either of those two
cases, your program should display, "There is no unique solution."
If bd - ae = 0 then there is no unique solution, otherwise the solution of the simultaneous
equations is:
Your test program should work by allowing the user to enter any 6 doubles they wish. Your test
program should then call the ctor of your class. It should then determine if there is a unique
solution or not. if so, display it (the value of x and the value of y that is the solution. If not, your
program will display, "There is no unique solution."
Program #3 - Using the Rational class we created, write a program that adds and then displays
the sum of the fractions:
1/2 + 2/3 + 3/4 + ... + 20/21. Use a loop to create and add these fractions. Do NOT have 20
lines of code to create these 20 fractions. Hint: if you use the class Rational as we discussed in
class, an integer overflow will occur. Therefore, change all of the int's to long's (except for the
return value in compareTo( ) ).
Program #4 - Write a program that implements a class Doubly-Linked List, but that doesn't have
an empty head or tail node. It should have all the methods that are in the Doubly-Linked List
class we did in class. Also, include a test program that tests your DLL. It should test each of the
methods in you class DLL.
There will be regularly assigned reading and homework problems. The homework problems will
require the student to spend time programming a computer.
All programming assignments are to be turned in using eLearning. Login to your eLearning
account, click on the link for this course. On the left side, click on the link for ‘Assignments’, and
then click on the desired Program link. In the ‘Add Comment’ section, put your name, the course
name, section, and date, as well as the platform that you used. Then click on 'Add Attachments',
and then 'My Computer', and then browse until you locate your Java program. Click on it and it
should upload to eLearning. Then click 'Submit' and that should do it.
Programming assignments will be graded on a 100 point basis. Correct execution, program
design, coding style, documentation, and comments all contribute toward your grade. Keep in
mind that you always want to write code that is easy to understand and is also easy to maintain.
Fewer lines do not necessarily mean a better program. Please use comments liberally.

Grading Policies:
Your grade will be based only on your test and programming project scores. PLEASE do not ask
me to change your grade or give you a grade for any other reason. I know that some of you will
lose scholarships, be deported, etc. if you do not make a certain grade; there is nothing I can do
about this. Of course, if a mistake was made in scoring, I will correct it. Any requests for
changes to scores must be made within 30 days after the day the graded material was returned
to the class. Any request for a grade change must be made within 60 days after the day that
grades were posted.
No extra work will be assigned nor will extra credit be given for any extra work performed by a
student.
Late assignments will not be accepted. Assignments are due at 11:59 P.M. on the day listed in
the syllabus.
Students are expected to be respectful to each other and to the course instructor. Disruptive
behavior in the class room is not tolerated.
Each student in the class is encouraged to join/form a study group. Members of each study
should support one another in learning and understanding the course material.
Projects and exams determine grades. All exams are open book and open notes. The final grade
will be composed as follows:

travel and/or risk-related activity associated with this course.
The University of Texas at Dallas administers student discipline within the procedures of
recognized and established due process. Procedures are defined and described in the
Rules and Regulations, Board of Regents, The University of Texas System, Part 1,
Chapter VI, Section 3, and in Title V, Rules on Student Services and Activities of the
university’s Handbook of Operating Procedures. Copies of these rules and regulations
are available to students in the Office of the Dean of Students, where staff members are
available to assist students in interpreting the rules and regulations (SU 1.602,
972/883-6391).
A student at the university neither loses the rights nor escapes the responsibilities of
citizenship. He or she is expected to obey federal, state, and local laws as well as the
Regents’ Rules, university regulations, and administrative rules. Students are subject to
discipline for violating the standards of conduct whether such conduct takes place on or
off campus, or whether civil or criminal penalties are also imposed for such conduct.
Academic Integrity
The faculty expects from its students a high level of responsibility and academic honesty.
Because the value of an academic degree depends upon the absolute integrity of the work
done by the student for that degree, it is imperative that a student demonstrate a high
standard of individual honor in his or her scholastic work.
Scholastic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to, statements, acts or omissions related
to applications for enrollment or the award of a degree, and/or the submission as one’s
own work or material that is not one’s own. As a general rule, scholastic dishonesty
involves one of the following acts: cheating, plagiarism, collusion and/or falsifying
academic records. Students suspected of academic dishonesty are subject to disciplinary
proceedings.
Plagiarism, especially from the web, from portions of papers for other classes, and from
any other source is unacceptable and will be dealt with under the university’s policy on
plagiarism (see general catalog for details). This course will use the resources of
turnitin.com, which searches the web for possible plagiarism and is over 90% effective.
Email Use
The University of Texas at Dallas recognizes the value and efficiency of communication
between faculty/staff and students through electronic mail. At the same time, email raises
some issues concerning security and the identity of each individual in an email
exchange. The university encourages all official student email correspondence be sent
only to a student’s U.T. Dallas email address and that faculty and staff consider email
from students official only if it originates from a UTD student account. This allows the
university to maintain a high degree of confidence in the identity of all individual
corresponding and the security of the transmitted information. UTD furnishes each
student with a free email account that is to be used in all communication with university
personnel. The Department of Information Resources at U.T. Dallas provides a method
for students to have their U.T. Dallas mail forwarded to other accounts.
Withdrawal from Class
The administration of this institution has set deadlines for withdrawal of any
college-level courses. These dates and times are published in that semester's course
catalog. Administration procedures must be followed. It is the student's responsibility to
handle withdrawal requirements from any class. In other words, I cannot drop or
withdraw any student. You must do the proper paperwork to ensure that you will not
receive a final grade of "F" in a course if you choose not to attend the class once you are
enrolled.
Procedures for student grievances are found in Title V, Rules on Student Services and
Activities, of the university’s Handbook of Operating Procedures.
Copies of these rules and regulations are available to students in the Office of the Dean
of Students, where staff members are available to assist students in interpreting the rules
and regulations.
As per university policy, incomplete grades will be granted only for work unavoidably
missed at the semester’s end and only if 70% of the course work has been completed. An
incomplete grade must be resolved within eight (8) weeks from the first day of the
subsequent long semester. If the required work to complete the course and to remove the
incomplete grade is not submitted by the specified deadline, the incomplete grade is
changed automatically to a grade of F.
Disability Services
Essentially, the law requires that colleges and universities make those reasonable
adjustments necessary to eliminate discrimination on the basis of disability. For
example, it may be necessary to remove classroom prohibitions against tape recorders or
animals (in the case of dog guides) for students who are blind. Occasionally an
assignment requirement may be substituted (for example, a research paper versus an
oral presentation for a student who is hearing impaired). Classes enrolled students with
mobility impairments may have to be rescheduled in accessible facilities. The college or
university may need to provide special services such as registration, note-taking, or
mobility assistance.
It is the student’s responsibility to notify his or her professors of the need for such an
accommodation. Disability Services provides students with letters to present to faculty
members to verify that the student has a disability and needs accommodations.
Individuals requiring special accommodation should contact the professor after class or
during office hours.
