Doctoral Dissertation (46-798)

Comprehensive Examination (46-741):

All clinical students prepare for and write the Comprehensive Examination (46-741) at the
end of their third year of the program. The examination is written over two mornings in
early June and focuses on assessing competence in the areas of psychopathology and
research methods and design. Students become doctoral candidates on successful
completion of the comprehensive examination. Students must pass both sections of the
Comprehensive Examination prior to scheduling a dissertation proposal meeting.
Successful completion of the Comprehensive Examination and all required courses for the
PhD (excluding internship requirements) denotes eligibility for doctoral candidacy.

Introduction to Psychotherapy (46-674)


At least one two-course psychotherapy sequence
A minimum of 1000 hours of practicum training is required, including 300 hours at
the MA level.

Practicum hours may be accrued during full or part-time placements across one or more
academic terms. Practicum hours accrued at the M.A. level are recorded under 46-
701(Clinical Practicum: MA Level) and hours accrued at the PhD level are recorded under
46-702 (Clinical Practicum: PhD Level).

Before applying for a practicum position, students must review the Guidelines for
Practicum Training (available on the CLEW website) and consult with the Practicum
Coordinator.

A full-time, full-year internship in an APA or CPA accredited setting (46-706) is required.


Students applying for predoctoral internships must have proposed their dissertations.

ADULT CLINICAL

Additional Courses

In addition to the general requirements set out for all clinical students, adult clinical
students must complete:

715: Psychological Services Centre Practicum

Adult clinical students must take three two-course sequences in psychotherapy, one of
which must be 694/695 (Experiential Therapy I and II), which is taken in conjunction with
the Psychological Services and Research Centre (PSRC) Practicum.

Recommended Options

All courses in the Clinical Psychology Program are open to adult clinical psychology
students provided prerequisites are met. Recommended courses are:

630: Professional and Practice Issues in Clinical Psychology

Courses in clinical neuropsychology or child clinical psychology, research methods,


health or community psychology
Additional psychotherapy course sequences
Additional clinical practica in approved settings

CHILD CLINICAL

Additional Courses

In addition to the general program requirements set out for all clinical students, child
clinical students must complete:

519: Advanced Developmental Theory and Research Methods
540: Developmental Psychopathology
A second two-semester psychotherapy course sequence.

Child clinical students are required to take two psychotherapy course sequences: 46-
692/693 (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy) and 46-675/676 (Child & Adolescent
Psychotherapy).

Recommended Options

It is recommended that child clinical students complete two additional developmental


courses or additional psychotherapy course sequences. Depending on their individual
interests, students may select courses not listed below or may choose to take no additional
courses. All courses in the Clinical Psychology Program are open to child clinical
psychology students provided prerequisites are met. Recommended courses are:
