Therehasalwaysbeendiscriminationagainstwomen.Itissad,itistrue.
Girlsacrosstheoceanaregettinghuntedforattendingschoolbecausesome
peoplebelievethattheyaresimplyarenotasgoodasguys.Womenallacrossthe
worldaresooftensexuallyabusedbypeopletheythoughtlovedthem,orpeople
whoaretotalstrangers.Theworldcanbeanastyplaceforawoman.Yes,there
arehugeissuesinvolvingwomensrightsthroughouttheworld.Butdidyou
knowthatthereisasevereissuethatisadailymatterinthelivesofAmerican
womentoday?!
Letmetellyouaboutthewagegap,aperfectsymbolofinequalityof
womenandmeninAmerica.Itisafactthatinalmosteverysingleoccupation
acrosstheUnitedStatesofAmerica,(needIremindyou,theplacewhereallmen
andwomenaresupposedlycreatedequal)womenarepaidlessthanmen.And,
worsethanthat,fordoingtheexactsamejob.LikeImentioned,discrimination
againstwomenisolderthanslicedbread,butthewagegapreallycameintofocus
whenPresidentJohnKennedycreatedtheEqualPayActin1963,wherewomen
earned11,776dollarslessthanmen.Thewagegaphasstartedtoclose,thatis
true.53yearsago,whentheEqualPayActwaspassed,thepercentageof
womenspaytomenswas58.9%,whiletodaythegaphasclosedtoroughly80%.
InIowa,thegapis77%.Thisgapisevenworseforwomenofcolor.
50%oftheAmericanworkforceiswomen,sothisgapgreatlyaffectsthe
Americanworkforce,andAmericanfamilieswhohaveworkingmothers-the
averageAmericanwomenwillearn1milliondollarslessthanamanduringher
workinglife,thereforetheyhaveahardertimeprovidingfortheirfamily.
Manycommonjobspaywomenevenlessthanthenormalgap-jobssuchas
doctors,compensationmanagers,andfinancialadvisors-andarevery
unforgivingwhenitcomestorecognizingthatmanywomendohaveajobasa
mom,aswellastheirnormaldayjobs.Ifthewagegapdoescontinue,itwill
greatlyaffectmysisters,myfriends,andeveryothergirlwhodreamsof
becominghardworkerwhentheygetolder.Itwillaffectmychildrenslivesand
myfamilyslives.
Therearesomestatisticsthattrytoexplaintheissueofthewagegap,but
really,thewagegapisunexplainable,exceptforthefactthattherearesomevery
sexistpeopleinourcountry.AsIhavestated,thewagegapisahugeissuein
womeninAmericaslivestoday,anditneedstoseeanend(therearemany
remarkablepeopleworkingonthis,includingourpresident,BarackObama).
Thewagegaphasclosedsomesense1963,whentheEqualPayActwaspassed,
from58.9%to80%,butthereisstillalotofworktobedonetomakesurethat
womenliveanequalandhappylifewiththeirpeersandfriends-men.Yes,the
wagegapissad,thewagegapisdisheartening,butitwillnotgetthebestof
womeninAmerica.
Weareproud,wearestrong,andwewillgetequalpay.
