Students will listen to a Scottish man read To a Mouse by Robert Burns (will be
revisited again).
Then, with a colored marker, they will fill out a conflict chart using prior
knowledge of conflict
DEVELOPMENTAL PROCEDURES
(including Key Questions)
Direct instruction using a Prezi on internal and external conflicts. Students will fill in the
motivation chart in a separate color as the instruction is taking place. Teacher will ask, what
could be an example of ________?
Students are required to write 2/3 details correctly with 1 example of each during the
presentation.
Students will then reread To a Mouse and analyze the line, The best laid schemes of mice and
men go often askew. Students will use think, pair, share to make a prediction of how this line
may connect to Of Mice and Men, focusing on its relation to conflict.
ADAPTATIONS (Exceptionality*)
Students with weak motor skills will have access to a hard copy of the presentation to ease the
stress of note taking.
Students with reading disabilities will have simpler text for definitions and examples.
DIFFERENTIATION OF INSTRUCTION
Struggling Students
Students who have difficulty in reading and literature will be required to understand 1/3
components of the definitions and 1 example overall of conflict. Student will be expected to
answer 1/5 questions correct on teacher generated assessment.
Average Students
Students on grade level will be required to understand 2/3 components of the definitions and
provide an example for each kind of conflict. Student will be expected to answer 3/5 questions
on teacher generated assessment.

Advanced Students
Students who have shown early mastery of material will be expected to understand 3/3
components of the definitions and provide more than 1 example for each kind of conflict.
Students will be expected to answer 5/5 questions on teacher generated assessment.
Student work during direct instruction of definitions must have 2-3/4 components written in the
chart.
Students will have written a plausible connection between To a Mouse and Of Mice and Men.
Quizizz multiple choice assessment differentiated for demographic.
INDEPENDENT PRACTICE
Students will complete a conflict worksheet that asks the students to identify characteristics and
behaviors of each conflict, based on the definitions.
Students will be able to predict examples of conflict in Of Mice and Men after a lesson on
characters and theme.
Academic Enrichment
Students will have to provide an example of conflict from a supplement text online or from the
classroom library.
Students will be able to fill out a table at the end of reading the novel with examples of each
conflict.
