Methods Methods
This chapter deals with methodological issues that the present study has
encountered. These issues are presented as follows:

2.1. Design of the Study:


Quantitative design, descriptive cross sectional study was used to assess the
practice's knowledge of nurses in the Heevi hospital surgical ward, Duhok city
/Kurdistan Region of appendectomy.

2.2. Administrative Arrangement:


Prior to the initiation of the present study, formal administrative approval was
obtained from the MOH/General Directorate of Health (GDOH) in Duhok
Governorate/Kurdistan Region and HEEVI hospital /surgical wards to conduct the
study (Appendix A).

2.3. Time of the study:

The study was conducted a period from (10 /Oct. /2016) to (3 /May/2017) Data

were collected during the period (3 /March/2017) to (25 /April/2017)

2.4. Setting of the Study:


To obtain valid and comprehensive data, the present study was conducted on
nurse's practice's knowledge of appendectomy in HEEVI hospital Duhok city,
Kurdistan Region/Iraq, including surgical wards.

2.5. Sample of the Study:


A non-probability (Purposive) sample of (8) nurses regarding patients with
appendectomy in Heevi hospital in Duhok city who fulfilled for the study had been
chosen according to following criteria:

2.5.1. Inclusion Criteria:


1. Nurses at medical surgical ward / HEEVI hospital
2. Nurses available in three shifts at the time of data collection.
3. Both gender of nurses.

2.5.2. Exclusion Criteria:


1. Nurses who are not available at the time of data collection.
2. Nurses who are not working in surgical ward/ HEEVI hospital

2.6. Methods of Data Collection:


Data were collected by using a questionnaire format, distributed by the
researchers (students) and through direct (face to face) interview method with nurses
working in HEEVI hospital, who kindly accepted to participate in the study. The
interviews were carried out from Saturday to Wednesday within data collection
period time. On each day, all consecutive cases which fulfilled the inclusion criteria
were selected.

2.6.1. The Instrument of the study:


The Researchers (students) designed and constructed the instrument to measure the
variables underlying the present study by using following technique:

2.6.1.1. Questionnaire of Study: The questionnaire format as a tool in the


study. It consists of two Sections:

Section A: this part of the questionnaire consists of items related to the


demographic characteristics of the nurses (gender, age, educational

attainment of nurses, period of working in surgical ward and have any course
training).

Section B: nurses practice item of Appendicitis (Appendectomy)

It is concerned with nurses practice and includes -- items in order these items
include sub questions with regard to the information such as care, education, help
& treatment methods. The items are rated according to the two points dichotomous
rate (Yes and No) and level of the scale were scored as (1) to Yes and (0) for No.
The score was modified according to the researchers point of view and statistical
clarification.

2.7. Statistical procedures:


Data were entered into a computer using the Statistical Package for Social Science
(SPSS version 19). Percentage and frequencies were used for
