Lab Report

1. Title
2. Introduction: when visiting the Galapagos Islands, Charles Darwin discovered more than a few species
called finches. These species varied from island to island, with doing so this assisted him with developing
hos theory of natural selection. The Galapagos Islands is the home to many unique animal species as in
giant tortoises, iguanas, fur seals, sea lions, rays and 26 other species of native birds. The number of birds
that make up the group known as Darwins finches 14, they are known to be the fastest-evolving
vertebrates due to their appearance and behavior. They also adapt quickly to rapidly changing environment.

Darwins finches have been caught by earth watch volunteer by nets to be measured and to collect genetic
samples and record damage caused by the parasite. Once that is done they are set free, this information
collected is helping to determine the current number of finches that live on the islands. These species are
monitored for increases on population, people assist in helping these birds from extinction.

a. Hypothesis
i. I believe that the people that had tweezers will most likely get more sunflower seeds then the
rest.
ii. The reason why I believe this is because they are easier to use for this situation then the other
materials given
3. Materials and Method
a. Tongs, hair clips, chopsticks, clothes pin, tweezers, chip clip.
b. Each one of us were given one of the materials mentioned and then tried and get as many sunflower
seeds as possible with them in 45 seconds. The 3 people that got more and the 3 people that got less
were taken to the front of the class. The 3 people who had the less sunflower seeds recollected in every
round were given a different material to try and see if they got more with the new material given and
the other 3 winners just returned to their seat with the same materials, we repeated this 6 times with
different results each time.
4. Results

b. The people that got the most sunflower seeds were the people using tweezers. As listed in the table,
they were the ones in use the longest because they wouldnt be switched due to them not being one of
the 3 losers.
5. Conclusion
a. I support my hypothesis because it ended up being correct. I stated that the tweezers would be the one
that would be of better use and after the completing the activity that was the result given.
b. The hypothesis was supported with the data because as listed above in the data and graph, the tweezers
were the most used and the most efficient as beaks to pick up the sunflower seeds.
c. Possible errors or outside factors that could impact my results would be that maybe someone that was
given tweezers doesnt know how to use it or isnt use to having them in their hands so it makes them
take longer to pick up the sunflower seeds. This would have a negative effect on my hypothesis and on
the results.
d. I believe it would because there is always going to be people that maybe know how to use artefacts
better than others or have more experience using them. If we were to do this experiment again with
people that specialize in using clothes pin the results would probably vary from tweezers being the
highest one to clothes pin being the highest one.
6. Discussion
a. A procedure and method that characterizes natural science back in the 17th century, using a systematic
observation, measurement, and experiment, and the formulation, testing, and modification of
hypotheses.
b. we made a hypothesis before the experiment was attempted concluding to a result.
c. I would use this method for school, I think everything that has a hypothesis and a process like this one
usually works out better.
d. Natural selection is a favorable variation process that increases throughout a population. The
underlined assumptions are variability, inheritance, competition, and differential reproductive success.
e. It simulated the theory of evolution by natural selection because it not only had a hypothesis, a process
and a conclusion, but it also involved differential reproductive success, competition, variability and
inheritance.
