English language requirements: IELTS: A minimum result of 6.5 overall and a minimum result of 6.0 in each
band TOEFL paper-based: A minimum result of 565 overall including a minimum result of 4.5 in Writing
TOEFL IBT: A minimum result of 85 overall including a minimum result of 17 in Reading, Listening and
Speaking and 19 in Writing

Closing dates: Semester 1 - 31 January of the same year. Semester 2 - 30 June of the same year. We strongly

Accredited by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS), the Master of Surgery (Surgical
Oncology) provides clinicians with the knowledge and skills to apply the best available research evidence
to surgical patient care, and broaden their knowledge base through a range of elective units of study.

A combination of coursework and research, this stream of the Master of Surgery is designed for those who see
their future in the eld of surgical oncology. You will undertake a range of core and elective coursework units
complemented by a research project in surgical oncology which will be the subject of your dissertation.

As a surgery student, you will learn from highly regarded clinicians and academics at the Sydney Medical
School, ranked 17th in the world* for our academic and research excellence. The knowledge you develop will
complement the practical experience you can obtain through the RACS training program, and augment your
research, leadership and communication skills. This course is not a qualication to practice surgery.

Our degrees are very relevant to postgraduate students who aspire to an academic or teaching hospital career, in
addition to potential employers who look to the acquisition of a postgraduate degree in surgery as a desirable

Graduate opportunities

The knowledge that graduates develop through this course will complement the practical experience they obtain
as advanced trainee in surgery at teaching hospitals through the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (or
equivalent) training program. This course is not a qualication to practice surgery.

Graduates of the Master of Surgery by coursework will understand the principles of applying the best available
research evidence to patient care. They will also have a knowledge of epidemiological methods, biostatistics,
literature searching and controlled trials as well as an understanding of research methodology for those with a
future interest in a teaching hospital or academic surgical career. In addition, graduates will have acquired
specic skills relevant to their surgical specialty.

Course accreditation

The knowledge that graduates develop through this course will complement the practical experience they obtain
as advanced trainee in surgery at teaching hospitals through the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (or
equivalent) training program.

Further study

Outstanding graduates may be eligible to pursue a higher degree by research in the courses of Doctor of
Philosophy, Master of Philosophy and Master of Surgery (by research) offered by Sydney Medical School. A
research degree provides students with the opportunity to prepare a substantial piece of work which represents a
signicant contribution in a particular eld of study; and to gain transferable skills in general research
methodology.
