Describe the community service/professional activity/s you attended or participated with:
The first event I attended was a lecture given by Dr. Kathleen Kendall-Tackett about the
link between inflammation and postpartum depression. The lecture was hosted by the Tucson
Postpartum Depression Coalition and the purpose was to educate nurses and health professionals
about the basics of psychoneuroimmunology and the effects of pain and stress on inflammation
conference started with a lecture by keynote speaker Dr. Esther Sternberg titled Healing Spaces:
The Science of Place and Wellbeing. Dr. Sternberg discussed the idea that beautiful places and
pleasing scenery can help speed up recovery times; many hospitals, like Banner University
Medical Center, are redesigning units with this concept in mind. This lecture was followed by a
showing of Dr. Sternbergs PBS special and then various breakout sessions where I heard a
lecture about maintaining energy and another about the effects of exercise on the aging process.
Where was this held and what was the program/activity length?
The postpartum depression lecture on January 24th was a two hour program and it was
University Medical Center. The program was a total of seven hours long, including a 45 minute
optional stretching activity in the morning; I opted against stretching but attended the remaining
about postpartum depression provided me with general insight into the negative effects of pain
and inflammation on the mental and emotional states of patients. This information will be
important for me to remember in the future so that I can adequately assess the holistic well-being
of my patients, making sure to address their emotional needs that may be impacted by their
physical conditions.
Dr. Sternbergs lecture on the connection between beautiful places and improved healing
personally resonated with me. I have known that I wanted to work in a hospital that has green
spaces and art hanging on the walls but could not articulate why except for the fact that these
things make me happy. It was validating to learn that nature and beauty have a positive impact on
patients as well. Learning about the evidence behind this connection has redoubled my
interested in maternity and postpartum issues. The lecture I attended had useful information that
was applicable to a wider spectrum of patients but I think the lectures are generally more
those interested in arthritis. The conference was very interesting and most of the information was
