Introduction

Many of todays Americans are curious about how Donald Trumps Presidency will

affect their lives for the next four years. Some believe that America will be made Great again,

and others believe that things will only get worse from here. The two genres that are being

analyzed are a magazine article titled Inside the Huge JFK Airport Protest Over Trumps

Muslim Ban by John Knefel and a cartoon titled Paul Ryan endorses Donald Trump by

Cohen Peart. They both focus on the central idea of how Americans are beginning to regret their

decision on supporting Trump and how his actions will affect them.

Body

The purpose of the magazine article by John Knefel is to inform the public about an event

taking place at the JFK airport. The article discusses how Donald Trump attempted to enforce a

muslim ban, which drove citizens to protest. Many Americans did not think that this ban was

necessary or the moral thing for our President to do. The language of the article is formal, which

gives the audience a more so serious tone. Throughout the article, readers are presented with

reliable information, as well as a visual of what was happening at the time.

The purpose of the Cartoon by Cohen Peart is to both entertain and inform. In the cartoon

Paul Ryan, whom is the House speaker, is receiving a tattoo from Donald trump that says I

heart Donald Trump 2016. His facial expression is sad, and his thought bubble states Im

gonna regret this... On the cartoon of Donald trump he has a number of tattoos with words such

as hate, lies, bully. There is a lack of language due to the cartoon relying on the visual. Though

the genre is not only trying to entertain its audience, it is also trying to impart a deeper meaning.

The characteristics written on Trump's arm are meant to describe who he is as a person.

The audience of the two genres would be those who agree with the message behind the

magazine article or cartoon. Though this does not mean that the genres are limited to this

particular audience. For example, the magazine articles usage of language and persuasion could

be targeted towards the audience who have different opinions on the topic. These genres are

similar due to their overall focus which is Donald Trump. They both also utilize a visual to

support their claims of the information. The difference between the two genres is that one, being

the magazine, communicates its message through a text and a visual. The magazine article

basically summarizes an event involving Donald Trump and the Muslim band protest and their

opinions on it. The cartoon on the other hand utilizes an illustration to communicate its message.

The magazine article helps evoke an emotional response by explaining how the ban

makes the Muslim and American community feel. This is effective in helping to achieve the

purpose of the genre because it attempts to extract sympathy from the audience. The cartoon

helps evoke an emotional response by using the thought bubble of Paul Ryan to express the

regret that Americans will feel due to them supporting Trump. It also utilizes the characteristics

of Donald Trump to express his character.

The genre that was most effective as far as conveying its message was the magazine

article. It included a summary of the event, where it happened, who was involved, and why it

took place. The audience is informed on what exactly was happening and who caused the protest.

It also included the point of views of those who were actually at the protest. The cartoon did

convey its message, though it was very limited due to the genre being an illustration. Both genres

lucidly expressed how the actions of Donald Trump would leave Americans with a feeling of

regret or disappointment.
