Hunt Math 6

Unit 3 3.8-3.13 Review Guided Groups 1/12/17

New Jersey Student Learning Standards for Mathematics:

6.RP.1 Understand the concept of a ratio and use ratio language to describe a ratio relationship between two
quantities.
6.RP.3 Use ratio and rate reasoning to solve real-world and mathematical problems, e.g., by reasoning about
tables of equivalent ratios, tape diagrams, double number line diagrams, or equations.
6.RP.A.3.C Find a percent of a quantity as a rate per 100 (e.g., 30% of a quantity means 30/100 times the
quantity); solve problems involving finding the whole, given a part and the percent.

Objectives: Students will be able to:

find percents of shaded grids
problem solve involving percents
convert fractions, decimals, and percents
Student Friendly Objective: Today I will be able to practice my knowledge of percents. I know Ive got
it when I can solve percentages without needing to ask for help.

Materials:
- S MARTboard presentation, Matching cards, Grid worksheet, Whiteboards, Exit Card

Do Now: - Take out and copy down HW into agenda Homework:

- Math Message: Sample exit card from yesterdays - Review Sheet
class

Procedures:
1. Teacher will take attendance and check in homework as students complete the Do Now.
2. Review answers to previous nights homework. Students will self-check. Discuss any questions or
concerns as a whole.
3. Review Do Now as a class (Exit Sip example). Prompt discussion by asking students what mistakes
were made in this exit slip. Possible answers could include:
Student X multiplied by the discounted price instead of the price before discount
Student X didnt properly subtract discount from original cost.
4. Introduce that todays lesson reviews lessons 3.8-3.13, specifically percents,
fractions/decimals/percents, as well as box and whisker plots. Discuss todays classroom setup
before moving into groups. Each student will be in group 1, 2, or 3. Group is based on the exit slip
from yesterdays class. They will be grouped by low/medium/high. The lowest group will come to
my station first.
5. Activity: The three stations will be as followed. Each group will roughly spend 10 minutes at each
station.
Matching- Students at this station will match fractions, decimals, and percents. There will be
two different matching piles. One will be a grade level matching pile, where most students will
start. The second pile will be a more challenging matching pile, and students that feel
confident can attempt this pile.
Task Cards-Students at this station will work on 15 task cards. They will be given a task card
sheet where they can do their work for each task card. These task cards involve finding
percents. When they finish with all 15 cards, they may check their answers at the back table.
Smartboard Station- Students at this station will review the exit slip with me at the board. We
will review any common mistakes and assure that we understand how to solve percent word
problems. Then, students will be given a whiteboard and we will practice solving percent word
problems.
Challenge Word Problem: One word problem will not be given a question. This
question challenges students to think about what kinds of question this word problem
could ask, and then solving their own questions. We will then share the questions with
the rest of the group.

Closure: Students will receive a progress check worksheet so they can reflect on their own skills and
assess how prepared they are for tomorrows quiz.

Formative Assessments:
Question/Answer - Teacher will clarify concepts for students with questions.
Class work Teacher will monitor student progress/understanding while walking around the
room.
Smartboard group Teacher will assess student knowledge of percent word problems by
monitoring student work on whiteboards.
Students Reflection Teacher will read over students assessment of preparedness for
tomorrows quiz.
