1. Please attach the hardware lock to any existing parallel port of your computer. Although in
most cases it is safe to connect the lock while the computer is powered, as a precaution to
electrical shorts during installation, please install the hardware lock according to the
following instructions:
1.1 IMPORTANT: Turn off the computer power to avoid any possibility of damage to
the electrical circuitry.
1.2 Make sure that the I/O card is firmly seated on the motherboard.
1.3 Remove the printer or any external-device cable from the local computer, if
attached.

GENERAL INSTALLATION NOTES

a. The original CD-ROM may be copied for backup purposes. However, the main executable
files will only work if the appropriate hardware key is installed in a parallel or USB port of
the computer in use.
b. In some instances, while trying to execute the program, the user may receive a window with
the message "Unable to obtain authorization. Maximum user count exceeded or hardware
device not found". Please refer to the notes below under Unable to Start the Program when
this occurs.
c. A parallel-port based hardware key should operate in series with other locks but will not
operate if connected in series with other Ensoft keys. If the user gets unknown error
messages while trying to run the programs, it is recommended to try each key individually to
check for possible conflicts.

d. If two or more parallel or green USB keys from Ensoft are connected to the same computer
only one will be recognized by the operating system (usually the first one that was
connected). However, multiple Ensoft black USB keys can be connected to the same
computer and all will be recognized.

UNABLE TO START THE PROGRAM

In some instances, while trying to execute the program, the user may receive a window with the
message "Unable to obtain authorization. Maximum user count exceeded or hardware device not
found". Possible explanations for this error message are the following:
1. Check that the computer in use is carrying the hardware key in a parallel or USB port. When
connecting parallel ports the user should verify that the hardware key has the pins connected
to an LPT port of the computer (and not to a 25-pin modem port which connects differently).
2. The program may have not been installed properly on the computer. During installation,
there are a few files copied to the Windows system directory and modifications performed to
the Windows registry. In many cases these modifications may only be allowed to the
network administrator. The files readme.95 readme.98 readme.nt and/or readme.xp
specify the modifications that are performed in each operating system, either Windows 95,
98, NT and/or XP. To solve this problem, the program may be re-installed in the computer
making sure that the user logged in the computer during installation is authorized to make
changes to the Windows registry.
3. Check that a version of the program is not already running in the background. This can be
easily verified by pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del simultaneously and checking the list of programs
that are operating in the computer (after pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del simultaneously, select the
Task Manager icon in Windows NT 4 or Win 2000 systems).
4. If the green USB key was attached before the driver files were installed (before installation
of the Ensoft software), then follow these instructions:
4.1 Connect the green USB key to the appropriate port.
4.2 Open the Windows Device Manager and on the Hardware tab make sure that no USB
device exists with the yellow interrogation signs indicating unknown device or
improper installation. If the yellow interrogation exists on a USB device then select on
that device and press the Delete key on the keyboard.
4.3 Unplug the green USB key and connect it again after a few seconds. During
installations on Windows XP a Wizard will be displayed the first time that an Ensoft
key is attached to the computer in use. Follow screen instructions for automatic
software installation.
