Possible Pathways Planner

GLC2O
Unit 2, Activity 2
Module 4, Assignment 2

I will be outlining 3 possible pathways in this
presentation. All three of them start the same way
but branch off into different pathways later on.

Pathway #1: Registered Nurse

Pathway #3: Neonatal Nurse
Pathway #4: Licensed or Registered Practical Nurse
#1 Registered Nurse
Where am I headed?
As a RN I would be responsible for keeping records
of my patients, administering their medication and
treatments, and monitoring their status.

Why this path?

I've always had it in my head to become a nurse. I
would be able to care for people and help make their
stay at the hospital as pleasant as possible. This
sounds almost perfect for me. The only draw back is
that RNs may have to work long hours since this is a
essential service.
#1 Registered Nurse
High school
In order to get into one of the required programs for this
profession I will have to take certain courses in grade 12 and
the prerequisites for them. I will also graduate with a OSSD.
These would be:
ENG4U
MHF4U, MCV4U, OR MDM4U
SBI4U
SCH4U
Two other U or M courses in Grade 12
I have to get at least 75% in these courses but I really should get
higher in order to be accepted above all the competition.
#1 Registered Nurse
Post Secondary
I would take the Nursing BScN McMaster
program at the Cambridge Campus of
Conestoga College. It would take 4 years to
complete.
I can then hopefully pass the NCLEX-RN
Examination
I can then start working as a registered nurse
as soon as I find a job.
#2 Neonatal Nurse
Where am I headed?
Neonatal nurses work with healthy born infants
or premature and serious ill babies in the
NICU of a hospital.

Why this path?

I'd love to work with babies and help them
survive. It will be so rewarding to see a baby
who was so tiny and helpless at first be
released from the hospital as a healthy baby
with its parents.
#2 Neonatal Nurse
I have to get at least 75% in these courses but I really should get
higher in order to be accepted above all the competition
#2 Neonatal Nurse
Post secondary
I would take the Nursing BScN McMaster program at
the Cambridge Campus of Conestoga College. It would
take 4 years to complete.
I can then hopefully pass the NCLEX-RN
I will now be a registered nurse. The registered nurse
and neonatal nurse pathways are similar. The difference
is now I will get a job at a hospital hopefully in an NICU.
Some hospitals will require previous ISU training but it is
not in my pathway plan to acquire this experience.
Hopefully I will be able to get a job without this
experience.
#3 Licensed or Registered Practical
Nurse
Where am I headed?
LPNs or RPNs monitor patients' vital signs, infections,
and nutritional intake among other things. They also
reinforce the teaching of registered nurses to the
relatives of the patient.
Why this path?
This path is like my plan to fall back on in case I am not
accepted into the Nursing-BScN program. The
occupation should be similar to the other ones and so a
good compromise. I can always get more education to
pursue those occupations later on. It sounds like a good
occupation. It just won't pay as well.
#3 Licensed or Registered Practical
Nurse
High School
In order to get into the program for this profession I
must have my OSSD(or equivalent) and take certain
courses in Grade 12 or 11.

These would be:

ENG4U OR ENG4C
A grade 12 math.
Can be 4U OR 4C.
A grade 11 or 12 C or U Biology
A grade 11 or 14 C or U Physics or Chemistry
#3 Licensed or Registered Practical
Nurse
Post Secondary
I could take a program such as the Practical
Nursing program at Conestoga College.
I think this would make me eligible to pass the
NCLEX-PN.
I would then be a practical nurse and find a job
in the field.
Financial Assistance

If I need financial assistance to complete my

education for these occupations I can:
Take a break between high school and the
program and earn some money working.
If I take the Nursing BscN program I can
work during the summer breaks.
Use OSAP(Ontario Student Assistance
Program). My brothers are using this
program and have no troubles with it so far.
In Conclusion...

All three of these occupations are good ones for me.

They are all nurses so I will end up in roughly the same
field, but they all have different paths. For being a
registered nurse or a neonatal nurse I will try to get my
BscN however this is a highly competitive program that I
want to get into. There is a likely chance that I will not be
accepted. If that happens, I can just fall back on my
contingency plan, a licensed or registered practical
nurse. Many people have been a licensed or registered
nurse but got further education to become a registered
nurse. I could still do this and if I still wanted to pursue a
job in the NICU and gain experience so that I can be a
neonatal nurse.
