Technology Lesson Plan

Name of lesson: My favorite Poet

Grade Level Appropriateness: Grades 9-12

Technology Content Standard Addressed: (NETS)S Addressed: Creativity and Innovation,


Research and Information Fluency, Technology operations and Concepts.

Other Content Standard Addressed: Students will be able to identify and define poetry.
Know how to write their own poems and how to use technology to do research and set up
presentations.

Objective: Students will know what poetry is and be able to identify famous poets and poems,
as well as different types of poems. Students will be able to use multimedia technology tools to
present a poet of their choice. They will be able to identify the poets life through computer
research and present their most popular works.

Materials needed to facilitate the lesson: Power point presentation introducing the poetry unit
and what their assignment will be. YouTube videos on poetry and famous poets. Books on
poetry. Copies of famous poems.

Suggested group size: students will work independently.

Procedures:

A. At the start of class, introduce the lesson that will be taught.

Today we will begin our unit on poetry, we will be introduced to what poetry is,
some famous poets and famous poems, and different types of poetry. We will be
doing a project on our favorite poets that we will present to the class.

B. Students will do warm up on board: What is poetry? have students write in their
daily journals what they believe poetry is. After about 5 mins, ask for volunteers
to share their thoughts.

C. Begin presentation on poetry. Students are to take notes of the information and
material that is being taught. Teacher will check notes at the end of class for
comprehension.
1. Begin presentation on poetry. What is poetry? Define poetry for students.
Give examples of what is considered to be poetry, why it is important
literature, a history of poetry.

2. Identify famous poets, give a background of their lives, their poetry styles and
why they are significant to know.

3. Identify the different types of poetry. Give examples of each type of poem.
Explain what makes them that type and why they are considered poetry.
Define the basic composition of each type of poem.

4. Identify famous works of poetry, who wrote them? What they are about? The
type of poetry? What makes them poetry? How they are interoperated? Why
they are important and significant to know?

a. Handout the copies of the poems for students to keep and reference back
to and take notes on.

5. Present the example of Where The Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein.


Identify author, who is he, his background and biography. What the poem is
about, what kind of poetry it is. What the poem means.

6. Present the example of The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost. Identify
author, who is he, his background and biography. What the poem is about,
what kind of poetry it is. What the poem means.

7. Show video hyperlinked in the presentation Ernie types a Poem Sesame


Street video about poetry.

8. Show video hyperlinked in the presentation What is your verse? Clip from
Dead Poets Society.

9. Introduce the My Favorite Poet project Students will create a presentation


about their favorite poet.

a. Poet can be anyone of their choice. Must be a published poet.

b. Presentation must be a minimum of 6 slides. Include: at least 3 pictures, a


biography of the poet, information on their published poems and 2
examples of their poetry.

c. Go over grading rubric My Favorite Poet Checklist and hand out a copy
to each student.

D. Check for student understanding. Ask: What are 2 types of poetry?

Who are 2 famous poets? What makes a poem a haiku?


E. Pick 3 students and check their notes to ensure that they are properly taking notes
on the material taught.

Assessment: For the assessment I will look for student comprehension of the material taught
by asking questions in regards to the poetry lesson that I just taught. I will pick a few students at
random and check their notes for clarity. Students will have to present their presentations at a
later time and will be graded based on a rubric that I have designed for understanding of the
poetry lesson that is being taught.
