UCAS Adviser Guide 2017 1

About this guide
This guide is for staff at schools, colleges, and other centres such as careers offices, who advise
potential applicants to higher education (HE) courses in the UK. It explains how to apply to UK
universities and colleges, how UCAS processes applications, how you can manage your students
applications, and the training we offer.

As an adviser, the idea of giving information, advice and guidance to students hoping to
progress to HE may seem daunting. To help you we offer online training and conferences
across the UK. See page 29 for details.

What is UCAS?
We process applications to study full-time courses at universities and colleges in the UK, as well
as some countries in Europe. We help advisers to help their students make informed choices,
by guiding them through the entire higher education application process. To support this, we
provide a wide range of valuable information and supporting services for advisers in schools
and colleges.

We also provide information, advice, and admissions services for UK conservatoires (UCAS
Conservatoires), for Initial Teacher Training (UCAS Teacher Training), taught postgraduate
courses (UCAS Postgraduate), and for young people looking to move to a new UK school
or college after theyve taken their GCSEs (UCAS Progress).

New UCAS Tariff

The Tariff is used by some universities and colleges to make broad comparisons between
qualifications used for entry to higher education courses. Points have been allocated to a wide
range of qualifications and these can be added together, within certain rules, to achieve a Tariff
score. Approximately one third of courses on the UCAS search tool currently refer to Tariff points.
It is anticipated a number of courses will refer to the new Tariff from September 2017 onwards.

Were introducing a new UCAS Tariff point system for courses starting from September 2017
information can be found at www.ucas.com/tariff-2017. See page 21 for details.

Information aimed at students is available at www.ucas.com/new-tariff.
