II. Work Product Review Process [ISO 20246]

Review Technique Types

ad hoc reviewing : unstructured independent review technique
author check : informal review performed by the author of the work product
buddy check : informal review performed independently by a colleague of the author
checklist-based reviewing : review technique guided by a checklist(s)
individual collation and analysis : activities that are usually performed by the author to
determine necessary actions resulting from the individual reviews
informal review : review with no formal documented output
Inspection : formal review of a work product to identify issues, which uses defined roles and
measurement to improve the review process. EXAMPLE Fagan Inspections [Fagan 1976] are a
specific type of inspection, and code inspections are used to review program source code.
milestone review : formal review of a work product used to determine its acceptability for use
in the next stage of development or for delivery. NOTE The requirement for this form of
review is normally specified in the project plan.
page-by-page reviewing : technique where the participants review the work product in a
sequential order addressing previously-identified issues as they come to them in the document
pair review : informal review of a work product performed by two suitably-qualified people
working in parallel (who do not include the author). ISO/IEC/IEEE DIS 20246

II. Work Product Review Process [ISO 20246]

Review Technique Types

peer desk check : informal two-person review where the author and a colleague walk through
a work product
peer review : review of work products performed by others qualified to do the same work.
NOTE Often performed during development of the work products to identify defects for removal.
The intent is to increase the quality of the work product as well as to reduce cost by fixing
defects as soon as possible.
perspective-based reading (PBR) : systematic technique that supports defect detection in a work
product, whereby PBR reviewers take on the viewpoint of specific stakeholders of the work
product to verify its correctness [Shull 2000]
role-based reviewing : technique where the participants review the work product from the
perspective of different stakeholder roles
scenario-based reviewing : technique where the review is guided by determining the ability of
the work product to address specific scenarios. NOTE This describes a set of techniques for
reviewing and not a specific review type.

Review Technique Types

technical review : formal review of a work product by a team of

qualified personnel that examines the suitability of the work product for
its intended use and identifies discrepancies from specifications and
standards. NOTE Technical reviews may also provide recommendations of
alternatives and examination of various alternatives.
walkthrough : formal review technique in which an author leads
members of the review through a work product, and the participants ask
questions and make comments about possible issues and other problems
work product : artefact produced by a process. EXAMPLE Project plan,
requirements specification, design documentation, source code, test plan,
meeting minutes, schedules, budgets, and incident reports.
