Genre Analysis Assignment

My genres are focusing on the Muslim ban that Donald Trump is trying to put in order.

Of course its a Muslim ban is a written genre by William Saletan. Trump: Ban Muslims by

Nate Beeler is a political cartoon that shows the audience what Trump is becoming. The topic

seen in the written genre implies that although Trump and his camp claim that the ban is not

against a religion, but against certain countries, his actual agenda is to ban those practicing Islam.

The visual genre shows the audience that although Trump won the election with his claims to

stop terrorists, he is the one who seems like the true terrorist. Although both genres are effective

at getting their point across, the written genre does a better job at giving the audience a clear

understanding of the problem and what can be done to stop it. This genre is trying to raise

awareness of the horrible acts that Trump is planning on enforcing in the country. It is deeper

than entertaining, because it is a problem that is affecting our friends, family, and neighbors. The

audience for this topic would be all citizens of the United States, or noncitizens with family

members in the United States, because these are the people who need to know what is going on.

Other countries could also be deemed as the audience because many other countries have spoken

about what Trump is doing and how they feel about it, being that some of their citizens are

affected by this as well. The purpose of the information is to persuade not only Americans but

people all over the world of the wrongful acts that Trump is trying to enforce. The audience ties
in with the purpose because there is a chance that a reader could be affected by this in the near

future. Depending on whether the audience stays up to date with current events or not, they

should know most of what is going on with this situation simply because it is all over the news,

radio, and social media. Regarding the visual genre, the audience should spend little time

analyzing it, three to five minutes at the most. For the written genre, the audience should spend

about ten to fifteen minutes analyzing it, being that it is an article that they would have to read

and maybe reread to get a clear understanding of what the article is stating. The language in the

written genre could be referred to as formal because of the professional grammar and credible

facts that are presented within the article. The language in the visual article would be in between

formal and informal. The grammar used in the cartoon is correct which is why it would be

considered formal, but the fact that they are making fun of Trump is the reason for it being

informal. The language used is appropriate to the purpose because although one genre uses

slightly informal language, it relates to the topic in a way because Donald Trump says and does

things that are informal, and the visual cartoon is making fun of the way he handles situations.

Between the two genres there are many similarities and few differences. To compare the two,

both are attacking Trump for his racist agenda against Muslims, they both show the audience that

despite his claims to be trying to stop terrorists, he seems to be the real terrorist, and they both

are clear and precise with their purpose. The only differences are that one uses visual and the

other is an article, also, one is quick and to the point, while the other is more in depth. Each

genre establishes credibility by using appropriate language and grammar and has a visual that is

appropriate to the topic. It makes the audience trust the material that is presented. Of course its

a Muslim ban evokes empathy because it goes through the plans of Trump and all of the

obstacles he is knocking over to make sure it happens, such as, fir[ing] Acting Attorney General
Sally Yates for refusing to enforce his executive order on immigration. These things should

make everyone feel some type of emotion, whether they agree with what he is doing or not,

simply because this is a sign to all citizens and all nations that Trump believes that if he wants

something done, he is going to get it by any means, and that is a sign of a dictator in the making.

Trump: Ban Muslims should evoke empathy because it is an accurate drawing of what many

Americans felt when watching the election. The genre that is most effective in conveying the

message would be the written genre. This is because it clearly states what Trump is trying to do,

how he is trying to cover it up, and what the audience should do about it. Genres offer a clear and

concise way of analyzing work, whether it be written, visual, or oral, all of the genres give

readers a different way to break down what the author is trying to get across.
