{Plus Three }
Essential classics for your jewelry box
By Judy Finman

S
uppose you were asked to choose five indispensable pieces of
jewelry? Not many women can narrow down their favorites
to only five baubles.
Gail Kanemoto Hogsett of Walters & Hogsett Fine Jewelers in
Boulder (2425 Canyon Blvd., Boulder, 303.449.2626,
www.waltersandhogsett.com) offers her nominations for the Big Five
jewelry classics: diamond stud earrings, pearl strand, hoop earrings,
classic watch, and right-hand ring.
“Fine jewelry can make you feel feminine, confident and
successful,” she says. “Generation after generation, these
jewelry pieces have been must-haves for a woman’s
jewelry wardrobe. Each generation may have had a
variation on the theme, but the classics have
basically remained the same. Within each
category, choose pieces to show off a touch of
your personality.”
Diamond stud earrings range from prong-
set to full-bezel. “The sparkle of a diamond
is perfect from blue jeans to elegant formal
wear,” Hogsett says. Earring jackets add
versatility by changing earring styles.
“Pearl strands vary from irregular shapes
to classic rounds in white South Sea, Chinese
freshwater or black Tahitian. Pearls can be worn
short, long, knotted or layered. The diverse
variety of pearls allows you to express your
personality and style.”
Hoop earrings take many forms, from hinged
earrings that hug the lobe to hoops in every
diameter. “Hoop earrings are flirtatious and so
fashionable; there are hoops that sizzle with diamonds
or basic hoops in gold or silver. There are hoops at
every price range.”
Hogsett describes a classic watch: “A fine
timepiece is more than something that just tells time
– it’s a beautiful piece of jewelry.”
The right-hand ring may be “a simple precious-
metal ring with no stones, to glittery diamonds or
beautiful colored gemstones. The right hand has
tremendous potential to express your style.”
But what about bracelets, gold-chain necklaces, and other
popular classics or near-classics? Hogsett gives them their due:
“Long chain necklaces, in gold, in sterling, or overlay metals, are
another must-have in today’s fashions. Choose a 36-inch to 40-inch
chain, and layer with pearls, beads or other chains, or simply double it
for great versatility.
“A diamond or gemstone bracelet, a charm bracelet, an entire
stack of bangles or a single bracelet to snug up to your watch – they’re
all fabulous accessories for your wrists.
“Left-hand rings aren’t limited only to brides. Rings with luscious
colored gemstones, pearls or even diamonds are worn not only on the
ring finger, but the middle or index finger.”
So five plus three makes a lucky number – and a lucky woman.
