Please note:
1. Documental evidence for all the components/parts of the assessment such as the reports,
photographs, laboratory exam / tool tests are required to be attached to the assignment report
in a proper order.
2. The First Examiner is required to mark the comments in RED ink and the Second Examiners
comments should be in GREEN ink.
3. The marks for all the questions of the assignment have to be written only in the Component
CET B: Assignment table.
4. If the variation between the marks awarded by the first examiner and the second examiner lies
within +/- 3 marks, then the marks allotted by the first examiner is considered to be final. If the
variation is more than +/- 3 marks then both the examiners should resolve the issue in
consultation with the Chairman BoE.

Part A

Preamble

Lime has been used as a binder for stones and brick, as a plaster for thousands of years. This is
strong, durable and reduces environmental impact. The knowledge of its properties and how to use
it has been lost in the last 100 years. Almost all buildings constructed before 1900 has been built
using lime.
With the introduction of Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) during the 19th century the use of lime
mortar in new constructions gradually declined, largely due to Portlands ease of use, q uick setting,
and high compressive strength. Despite of having these properties cement contributes most to
environmental pollution which is considered to be a major issue these days.
Cement production contributes greatly to global warming, as ample amounts of carbon dioxide are
released during its production, none of which is re-absorbed by cement plaster. In contrast, Lime
production results in release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, but lime mortar absorbs carbon
dioxide from the atmosphere over its lifetime. As a result, environmentalists consider lime mortar to
be "carbon neutral."
In this context, debate on the topic entitled Lime mortar would replace cement mortar in future
constructions

Your debate should address the following: (10 marks)

1.1 Importance of lime and cement in construction
1.2 Advantages and disadvantages of lime and cement
1.3 Justification of the stance

Part B (40 marks)

B .1 A loading system is shown in Figure 1. Replace this loading system by an equivalent resultant
force and couple moment acting at a point A.

B .2 A compacted earthen dam is retaining water as shown in Figure .2. Let (2X) m be the top width
and (5X) m be the bottom width of the dam. Two horizontal loads are acting, the first load of
magnitude 1500kN is acting at a distance (1.5X) m from the bottom of the dam towards right and
the second load of magnitude 300kN is acting at the distance (X/3) m from the bottom of the dam
towards left. Along with these loads there is one more vertical load acting at the centre of the top
surface in the downwards direction of magnitude 500kN. Determine the location and magnitude of
resultant. Also comment whether the dam is stable or not. Take height of the dam as 3x.

B. 3 Solve for the resultant of the six planar loads on the truss shown in Figure.3. Three loads are
vertical. The wind loads are perpendicular to the side. The truss is symmetrical. X will be last two
digits of your register number.

B .4 Two homogeneous smooth spheres weighing W 1 and W2 and having diameters 800mm and
1200mm are placed in a trench. Determine the reactions.
Take W1 as 30X, W2 as 50X, where X is the last two digits of your regi ster number. W1 is the
weight of smaller sphere and W2 is the weight of the larger sphere.
