Really Fast Dirt-Scooters

By: Jacob Striegel & Dylan King

We did a sample survey in which we asked people their height and
what size dirt scooter they ride. A sample survey is to study a group of
individuals by studying only some of its members. We predicted that if you
are taller then you will ride a bigger dirt scooter with a 60% variation and
positive correlation. After collecting the data we used Microsoft Excel to
create a scatter plot and line of regression which we then used to analyze
our data and compare it to our prediction.

Population is the entire group of individuals being studied; the

population of our study is any human being that rides a dirt-scooter. A
sample is a part of the population from which we collect data; the sample of
our study was the 25 dirt-scooter riders that we studied at the high school. A
variable is any characteristic of an individual, our explanatory variable was
the individuals height and our response variable was the size of their dirt-
scooter. We chose the explanatory and response variables in this order
because you have to be tall enough to touch the ground in order to ride the
dirt-scooter.

Height (in)

The point (70,65) is an outlier because the Y value is smaller than the X
value and no other points are like this, this causes the point to be near the
bottom of the graph but far away from the regression line.

The points (67,450) and (77,500) are also outliers because their Y values are
greater than all the Y values of the other points; this causes the points to be
far above the regression line.
Correlation describes the direction and strength of a straight line
relationship, it is represented with (r). Our correlation value was 0.555, which
means the correlation is positive, so as X increases Y increases. The
correlation of 0.555 means the correlation is moderate meaning the
correlation is somewhat valid.

Coefficient of Determination is variation in the values of Y that is explained

by the least squares regression line of Y on X, it is represented with (r 2). Our
coefficient of determination was 0.308 meaning any prediction has a 30.8%
variation.

The least-squares regression line is a line that makes the sum of the squares
of the vertical distance as small as possible. The equation of our regression
line was y=10.711x-516.180

y = 10.711(50) 516.180

y = 535.55 516.180

y = 19.37

One of our lurking variables is gender. Girl dirt-scooter riders tend to

ride a smaller dirt-scooter than a male. Another lurking variable is age, Mr.
Bateman is the oldest person that we collected data from and he has the
biggest dirt-scooter this could be due to him making more money than the
younger people in our data set.

If youre 50 inches tall we can predict that you will ride a 19.37(cc) dirt-
scooter with a 30.8% variation with a positive correlation. The correlation of .
555 means that is moderately accurate and valid which means our prediction
was somewhat correct.
