IT Responsibilities of a Systems Administrator

Provide multi platform systems programming and advanced

o Ensure the security and integrity of any equipment attached
to the SURIAGROUP Network

o Recommend additional security software as needed
Resolve issues and vulnerabilities found on SURIAGROUP scans
Back-up and recovery for critical data
Account creation/removal procedures
Account group creation/removal procedures
Server back-up
User support
Network monitoring
Equipment maintenance
o Standard security settings
Default account settings
Password control
System monitoring
Data integrity
Data confidentiality
Host based firewalls
Periodic verification of security settings
Change control procedures
o Tape Backup Operations
o Ensure previous nights backup was successful
o Provide for a tape rotation schedule and change tape
according to process (see below)
o Store tapes in an appropriate safe place or off-site
o Tape media should be replaced no less than once a year
o Tapes should be clearly marked
Virus protection procedures
o Ensure virus protection software is operational on the server
and workstations and loaded with new signature files which
can be automatically updated at a minimum 2 day interval
o Any workstation wishing to attach to the server should be
running the VirusScan Security Suite; those not running virus
protection should not be allowed to login to departmental
servers
o Discovered viruses are the responsibility of the user who
should notify the departmental support person. (Centrelize
scan fron the server are handle by administrator.
o As new antivirus software becomes available, departmental
support staff will make regular updates or configure regular
automatic updates.
o Only departmental IT support or systems administrator will
download or install software due to viruses which can be
downloaded from the Internet.

Hands-on experience is essential to get a job
as a system administrator; just the right
qualification is not enough.
