3.1 Values

organizations image is built. These help the company realize its organizational goals and in turn transform
lives. These values are intended to infuse an infectious energy, professionalism and a sense of true
empowerment to the workplace.

The solid edifice on which HT Media stands tall today was built on high ideals and values. The company has
its roots in the independence movement in the first half of the twentieth century, a cause to empower the
nation. They are adaptive to the changing times, while remaining steadfast to the values rooted in our culture.

3.3 History

Hindustan Media Ventures Ltd was incorporated on July 9, 1918 as a public limited company with the name
The Behar Journals Ltd. In the year 1919, the company commenced their printing press at Patna. Also, they
commenced printing and publishing of English newspaper 'Searchlight'. In the year 1947, the company
commenced printing and publication of Hindi daily 'Pradeep' at Patna. In the year 1986, the company
commenced printing of Hindi daily 'Hindustan' and the English daily 'Hindustan Times' on behalf of 'The
Hindustan Times Ltd' at Patna. Also, they terminated the printing and publication of the Hindi daily 'Pradeep'
and the English daily 'Searchlight'. In November 17, 1987 the name of the company was changed from The
Behar Journals Ltd to Searchlight Publishing House Ltd in order to capitalize on the name earned by their
publication 'Searchlight' which had become synonymous with the company's activities for over 67 years. In
the year 2000, the company commenced printing of Hindi daily 'Hindustan' and English daily 'Hindustan
Times' from Ranchi location, in terms of a printing agreement with the holding company and publisher of the
said publications 'The Hindustan Times Ltd'. The media business comprising of the entire printing and
publishing undertakings of HTL except the printing business at New Delhi was transferred to HT Media Ltd
with effect from July 1, 2003. Due to this transfer, the company became a subsidiary of HT Media Ltd with
effect from July 1, 2003. In November 2008, the name of the company was changed from Searchlight
Publishing House Ltd to Hindustan Media Ventures Ltd to reflect the expanded business activities intended to
be undertaken by the company. In the year 2009, the company acquired Hindi business from HT Media Ltd
comprising of Hindi daily newspaper, 'Hindustan' including 'Ravivasriya Hindustan'; magazines 'Nandan' and
'Kadambini'; and internet portals of the said publications with effect from December 1, 2009.

Produced by an editorial team known for its quality, innovation and integrity, Hindustan Times (English
newspaper) and Hindustan (Hindi newspaper) through a subsidiary Hindustan Media Ventures
Limited),Hindustan Times is the choice for nearly 5.0 million readers across India, who turn to it daily for
news, information, analysis and entertainment.

In addition to Hindustan Times, HT Media also publishes a national business newspaper, Mint. Mint is a one-
of-its-kind newspaper in the sense that the company has an exclusive agreement with the Wall Street Journal to
publish Journal-branded news and information in India. Mint is today the second-largest business newspaper
in India with presence in the key markets of Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Chandigarh, Pune, Kolkata
and now Ahmedabad too.
HT Media has also made its foray into electronic media. Diversifying its ambit of operations, the company in a
consulting partnership with Virgin Radio, has launched the FM radio channel - Fever 104 In a short span, the
channel's rise has been meteoric considering its position in Mumbai and Bengaluru at No. 1 and in Delhi as the
No. 2 station on the popularity charts.

Internet businesses of HT Media incorporated under Firefly e-ventures, operate leading web
portals Hindustantimes.com and livemint.com in the general and business news categories respectively. The
company's job portal Shine.com which has received high appreciation from consumers and industry for its
innovative design and usability crossed 7 million registrations. Desimartini.com -a platform to discover and
express oneself on movies. The company also has an education portal www.HTCampus.com aimed at
students passing out of school and college to help them take the right decision about their higher education.

third largest-read daily in the country. Hindustan has 13 editions across the Hindi belt. Hindustan is known for

Radio- Fever 104 FM

Fever 104 FM is a private radio station from HT Music and Entertainment Company Ltd, a subsidiary of HT
Media Ltd, Fever 104 FM is present in the most vibrant and important markets of India including Delhi-the
national capital, Mumbai-the financial nucleus, Bangalore- the technology hub and Kolkata- the cultural
capital. The station stays true to its core brand promise of "It's all about the music" with the best quality and
maximum quantity of music on-air through its signature property of 40 minutes of non-stop music. Fever 104
FM caters to 18-34 SEC A/B audiences. Its primary target audience is the 18-24 year` old young adult, who is
typically a college-going or a young professional, Fever 104 has also been involved in exciting and innovative

Human Resource Department in HMVL carries out the following functions:

Manpower Planning

It involves the planning for the future and finding out how many employees will be needed in the
future by the business and what types of skills should they possess. It depends on the following
factors:

The number of people leaving the job


The projected growth in sales of the business
Technological changes
Productivity level of the workers

Job analysis and Job description

HR Department of HMVL is also involved in designing the Job analysis and Job description for
the prospective vacancies.

A job analysis is the process used to collect information about the duties, responsibilities,
necessary skills, outcomes, and work environment of a particular job.

Job descriptions are written statements that describe the:

duties,
responsibilities,
most important contributions and outcomes needed from a position,
required qualifications of candidates, and
reporting relationship and co-workers of a particular job.

Determining wages and salaries

HR Department is also involved in conducting market surveys and determining the wages and
salaries for different position in an organization. These decision may be taken in consultation
with top management and the Finance department .Wages represent hourly rates of pay and
salary refers to the monthly rate of pay, irrespective of the number of hours put in by an
employee. In HMVL wages and salary are subjected to annual increments.

Recruitment and Selection

One of the most important jobs HR department is to recruit the best people for the organization.
This is of crucial importance as the success of any organization depends on the quality of its
workforce. It is a process of finding and attracting capable applicants for employment. The
process begins when new recruits are sought and ends when their applications are submitted. The
result is a pool of applicants from which new employees are selected.

Performance Appraisal

Once the employees are recruited, the HR Department has to review their performance on a
regular basis through proper performance appraisals. Performance appraisal is the process of
obtaining, analysing and recording information about the relative worth of an employee. The
focus of the performance appraisal is measuring and improving the actual performance of the
employee and also the future potential of the employee. Its aim is to measure what an employee
does.

Training and Development

HR department of HMVL constantly keep a watch over the employees of the organisation. In
order to improve the efficiency level of the employees they have undergo regular trainings and
development programmes. All trainings and development needs are carried out by this HR
department of HMVL. Training include on the job or off the job training.HT Media Ltd has 6-
sigma training. 6 sigma training is learning from error free work training in a given and limited
time. In this training trainees have to do maximum work in small duration with no error. Trainees
are given some specific task to perform.

Employee welfare and motivation

Happy employees mean a healthy organization. HR Department of HMVL conducts various


employee welfare activities which include employees get together, annual staff parties etc. HR
department also reviews organizational policies and its impact on the motivation of the
employees.

Addressing employees grievances

HR department is the link between the workers and the management. Employees grievances
related work environment are usually entertained and resolved by the HR Department of
HMVL.

Labour management relations

For the smooth operation of any organization, it is crucial to have good labour management
relations. HR department has to ensure that these relations are cordial. In case of any labour-
management conflict the HR Department of HMVL play a vital role in bringing both
management parties to the negotiation table and resolving the issue.

Implementing organizational policies

HR Department has to coordinate with line manager and see that the organizational policies are
being implemented in a proper manner. Disciplinary action can be initiated against employees
who are not following organizational rules and regulations. All these actions are conceived and
implemented by the HR department.

Dismissal and redundancy

HR Department has to take firm actions against employees who are not following the
organizational code of conduct, rules and regulations. This can result in the dismissal of the
employee.

Sometimes, an organization may no more require the services of an employee. The employee
may be made redundant. HR Department has to see that organizational and government
regulations are being followed in this process.

3.8 Recruitment and Selection Policy at Hindustan Media Ventures Ltd.


Recruitment and selection in every organization is the basis of their development. It is the root on
which the whole organization expands. If the roots are strong the organizational structure can be
dependable.

Through this research on recruitment and selection policy in Hindustan media ventures limited,
the observations are as under.

HMVL has a fair and well defined recruitment selection policy. With regard to recruitment, the
function of HR department is very clear and with regard to selection policy, it is very transparent
as management as well as the staff are well aware of the policy.

The seniors of HR deptt. were also contacted and through interaction their procedure for the
above process is as follows.

The applications for recruitment of candidates are received both at local and Head office.
The applications are then short listed through computerized and manual checking both.
Generally the candidates are called for interview. But the candidates for editorial section
are called for written test and interview both.
Generally the final selection is done through H/O but in case of exigencies, the local
office can recruit a few persons as per their need and get their action confirm from H/O.
In addition to above, transfer within the state are empowered to the local HR division.
The HR dept. is also empowered to engage temporary /casual labours for day to day
needs through contractors. Securities personnel are also engaged through security
agencies for which local HR is empowered.
It is also observed that no consultancy is engaged in recruitment and selection process.
Though the final selections are done at H/O level, yet the man power planning is decided
at local office by the different departmental heads.
The finalized man power planning is sent to head office for approval periodically.
After receiving approval, the appropriate process for selection of candidates is followed
by the local HR dept.
Generally the man power planning is approved at H/O level but the feedback and
consultation is also done with the local HR dept. on monthly basis through MIS i.e.
Management information system.
Normally it takes two to three days for selection of a candidate at local and head office
level.
The date, venue, time of interview to the selected candidates is informed through call
letters well in advance.
But the candidates are not paid any travelling expenses for interviews or written test.
However the salary packages are neither negotiated nor told in advance. But are fixed by
H/O according to their policies.
