IB MYP Physics I Speed and Velocity Problems

Just How Fast???

1. A car travels 210 miles along the highway in 3 hours. How fast was it going?

2. The speed limit of most sections of the highway is 65 miles/hour. If a car travels 450 miles in in six
hours, was the car exceeding the speed limit? How far above or below the speed limit was the car?

3. In 1990, Glenn Spear set a world speed record by swimming the 50 meter freestyle in 21.81 seconds.
What was Glenns speed?

4. A college scout is looking for a swimmer to break Glenn Spears speed record. He watches a
swimmer doing a 100 meter freestyle event. When the swimmer reaches the halfway point in
distance, he is timed at 23.71 seconds. Did he beat Glenn Spears speed record? Why or why not?

5. If the swimmers final time at the end of the 100m free-style was 41.32 s, would the scout recruit the
swimmer for his swim team to swim the 50 meter race? What about the 100 meter race? Why or why
not?

Just a Matter of Time

6. A car is going 35 miles/hour to reach its destination 175 miles away. How long will it take to reach
its destination?

7. A runner jogs for 45 minutes at 7 miles/hour, then does a cool-down walk for
10 minutes at 3 miles/hour. How long was the runner out exercising? If the runner continually went
in a straight line, for his entire trip, what was his displacement? If, after 45 minutes, the runner
turned around and walk in the opposite direction for his cool-down, what would then be his
displacement?

8. A track team is going to nationals just past Pyeongchang, 135 miles away. The bus travels along the
highway at 65 miles/hour, but stops at a rest stop 55 miles into the trip. How long was the team on
the bus for the first part of the trip?
9. The team stops at the rest stop for 15 minutes, and then continues on the bus traveling at 65
miles/hour until the bus reaches its final destination just beyond Pyeongchang. In hours and minutes,
how long was the entire trip?

10. Two friends want to reach an amazing restaurant out in the countryside. The first friend likes to
travel by county roads that tend to curve and amble showing off the gorgeous scenery. The other
friend doesnt like to spend too much time in her car and is not really interested in the scenery, so she
likes to take a more direct route via a straight highway. If the friend traveling the county roads must
travel 63 miles to the restaurant and travels 35 miles/hour, and the friend traveling the highway must
only travel 45 miles to reach the restaurant and travels at a speed of 55 miles/hour, if they leave at the
same time, how much sooner will the second friend arrive compared to the first?

A Little Bit of a Challenge!!!

11. It takes you 30 minutes to get to work when you drive your car along a direct route at 45 mile/hour.
How far is work from your home?

12. An end of summer road trip finds three friends on their way to Everland. Their first stop is to GS25
to get snacks for the trip, traveling 35 miles/hour for 10 minutes. After loading up the car, they
headed onto IC 251 at 55 miles/hour for another 12 minutes. Finally, they reached IC 1 and traveled
65 miles/hour for 1 hours until they reach the Everland exit. How far did they travel? Did you
measure their distance or their displacement?

13. A snowmobile travels south at 45 mi/hr for 30 minutes, turns west, and continues traveling at 35
mi/hr for an hour. What distance did the snow mobile cover? What was the displacement of the
snowmobile? What was its speed? What was its velocity?

14. A cyclist bikes at 15mi/hr due east for 45 minutes, then makes a turn 60 degrees north of east and
continues traveling at 20mi/hr for 90 minutes. What was the cyclists final displacement? What was
his velocity?
