Environmental Policy in the Port of Oslo

Cleaner ocean, fresher air and a greener city

The Port of Oslo and our port community affects the environment every day. The
Port of Oslo is proud to be ISO 14001 certified. This obligates us to make sure
that our negative impact on the environment is reduced, and that we use the
opportunities to ensure positive environmental effects when possible. Our
Environmental policy describes what we want to achieve. We have three
strategies (a noise strategy, a bluegreen strategy and a climate strategy), which
show goals and measures to become even more environmentally efficient than
today.

The reward is a cleaner ocean, fresher air and a greener city which we all can
enjoy.

This drawing shows how the Ports activities affect the environment (identified
through the work with ISO 14001), and our visions to reduce our environmental
impact by 2030.

Bluegreen strategy we can stop polluting ocean,

water, soil and air
The Bluegreen strategy (2014) shows the connection between grey, blue and
green surfaces, and it shows how we can work for an even more environmental
efficient port.

The grey structures in the Port of Oslo are the areas with buildings, port
activities and roads.
Goal We use less salt, produce less dust and we handle snow in the best way
possible
Goal We handle surface water in the best way possible
Goal We use environmental friendly chemicals and choose our materials with
consideration
The blue structure in the Port of Oslo is the fjord within Oslo
municipality boundaries
Goal We contribute to stop pollution from ships and port activities
Goal We contribute to create good conditions for the marine life
The green structure in the Port of Oslo consists of lawns, flowerpots, a
few green roofs and trees. Even more green areas will emerge in the
areas with city development in 2030.
Goal We contribute to make good green areas and we preserve the biological
diversity

Maritime cultural heritage plan and aesthetic

guidelines we display the ports maritime
cultural heritage and use our aesthetic guides
Goal We value good architecture, and good aesthetics should be our signature
Goal We convey the maritime cultural heritage of the port

Noise strategy we are considered as a better

neighbor
The Port of Oslo has a noise strategy (2013) which provides guidance for our
actions and challenges in regard to the phase of regulation, the project phase,
during construction and in the operational phase of our activities.
Goal We are considerate, work preventative, and secure noise reducing port
activities
Goal We handle our containers with efficiency and noise prevention in mind
Goal We consider the use of best available technology in regards to noise when
purchasing all types of port equipment
Climate strategy
we cut greenhouse gas emissions every year
and sort more waste
The climate strategy (2014) shows how we can reduce our climate emissions,
how to improve air quality, how to reduce energy consumption, and increase our
environmental efficiency in our waste management in the port.

Goal We cut emissions by having more transportation by sea

Goal We contribute to cutting emissions from ships and port activities
Goal We consider consider strict energy requirements in our new builds
Goal We choose alternative sources of energy
Goal We choose the most environmentally efficient vehicles in new purchases
Goal We sort our waste in an environmentally efficient way
