Impeachment talked swirled Wednesday amid
a week of bombshell news reports thatPresident

D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham described

U.S. military Color Guard
to march in D.C. Pride parade
An eight-member contingent of a U.S. Armed Services Color Guard, which has
accompanied D.C.s annual Capital Pride Parade since 2014, will continue that
tradition this year during the June 10 parade, according to Capital Pride board
president Bernie Delia.
Delia said the U.S. Army Military District of Washington, which is in charge of
Color Guard contingents in the D.C. area, notied Capital Pride on April 23 that it
had approved the Color Guards participation in the parade this year.
Color Guard contingents usually consist of members of all ve branches of
the military wearing full dress uniforms and who carry the American ag and
the ags for the military branches, including the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force,
and Coast Guard.
The Color Guard contingent has drawn loud applause from spectators lining
the streets during each of the past three years it has accompanied the parade.
Delia and Capital Pride Executive Director Ryan Bos said that similar to
each year since 2014, the Color Guard members will march behind a group of
motorcyclists called Out Riders that were formerly known as Dykes on Bikes in a
procession ahead of and separate and distinct from the rst ocial contingent
in the parade.
This year, Delia said, the rst parade contingent will consist of trans queer
youth and other members of the citys transgender community.
Following behind them will be a contingent of the parades 2017 Grand
Marshals, who will include veteran national LGBT activists Jim Obergefell, Mandy
Carter, Nicole Murray-Ramirez, and Edie Windsor.
Obergefell and Windsor were the lead plaintis in two separate landmark
U.S. Supreme Court cases that opened the way for legalizing marriage for
same-sex couples nationwide. Carter is a longtime lesbian rights and African-
American civil rights advocate. Murray-Ramirez, a San Diego Human Rights
Commissioner, has been involved in LGBT rights causes for more than 40 years,
has helped organize past LGBT rights marches on Washington, and is a member
of the organizing committee for this years national LGBT equality march on
Washington scheduled for June 11.

D.C. dentist pleads guilty to
sexually assaulting male patients
A former D.C. dentist pleaded guilty on May 15 to sexually assaulting ve male patients
and one male employee at his dental oce at 3211 M St., N.W., between 2010 and 2014.
In a 13-page plea bargain agreement led by prosecutors in D.C. Superior Court,
Bilah Ahmed, 44, armed that he fondled the penises of the ve male patients after
administering nitrous oxide anesthesia to the patients through a facemask.

Ahmed, whose D.C. dental license was suspended in 2014, asked four of the ve
patients whom he admitted to sexually assaulting intrusive and inappropriate
questions about their personal life, including their sexual orientation, shortly before
administering the nitrous oxide anesthesia, the plea agreement states. It says the
incidents took place while the patients were alone with Ahmed in a procedure room,
according to the plea agreement.
Among the charges to which he pleaded guilty were second-degree sexual abuse of
a patient with aggravating circumstances, rst-degree sexual abuse of a patient with
aggravating circumstances, and simple assault.
The simple assault charge involved an admission that he touched a second male
employee several times in a sexually suggestive way on his lower back and hip after the
employee repeatedly asked him not to do so.
After being administered nitrous oxide, K.E. fell asleep, the plea document says in
describing Ahmeds actions toward one of the patients identied only by his initials.
When he awoke, the defendants pants and underwear were down to the defendants
feet, the document says. The defendant was masturbating in front of K.E. The
defendant took K.E.s hand and placed it on the defendants penis.
The document adds, The defendant then unzipped K.E.s pants and placed his own
hand on K.E.s unclothed penis. The defendant continued to masturbate himself until he
(the defendant) ejaculated, the plea document says.
In exchange for the guilty plea prosecutors with the U.S. Attorneys Oce agreed to
drop several additional charges against Ahmed handed down by a Superior Court grand
jury in a multi-count indictment last October.
During the May 15 plea hearing, Superior Court Judge Zoe Bush scheduled a sentencing
hearing for Ahmed on Aug. 10. He faces a possible maximum sentence of 15 years in
prison for the First Degree Sexual Abuse charge along with signicant additional time
for the other charges to which he pleaded guilty.
Under terms of the plea agreement, prosecutors agreed to allow Bush to be released
into home detention at his residence in Falls Church, Va., until the time of his sentence
with an exception that he is allowed to leave home for daily prayer at a mosque in Falls
Church or at the Islamic Center on Massachusetts Avenue in Northwest D.C.

Lesbian D.C. official named
in school favoritism probe
Courtney Snowden, who serves as D.C.s Deputy Mayor for Greater Economic
Opportunity, was identied last week as the subject of an investigation by the D.C.
Inspector General into allegations that former city Public Schools Chancellor Kaya
Henderson gave preferential treatment to some city government ocials by allowing
their kids to enroll in prestigious schools.
The Washington Post cited unnamed but knowledgeable sources as saying Henderson
in 2015 allowed Snowden to bypass a school lottery required of parents to apply for
enrollment of their children in certain schools and allowed Snowden to enroll her son in
the Capitol Hill Montessori at Logan school, which had a waiting list of more than 1,000
families seeking to enroll their kids.
Snowden, a lesbian, told the Post that neither she nor Henderson did anything wrong,
pointing out that Henderson invoked her authority under school system rules to make a
discretionary exemption to the lottery system based on her showing her sons unique
needs for enrolling in the school.
Inspector General Daniel W. Lucas informed the D.C. Council last month that an
investigation conducted by his oce found that Henderson failed to act impartially and
gave preferential treatment to certain District government ocials and members of the
public, by placing their children in schools outside the lottery system, according to the Post.
The Post, which published stories linking Snowden to the investigation for three
consecutive days last week, reported that D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser had been informed
of the Inspector Generals investigation but was not told which city ocials may have
beneted from Hendersons alleged favoritism.
Courtney Snowden is an outstanding public servant who has taken on the critical
task of ensuring that economic opportunity is available to all District residents, mayoral
spokesperson Kevin Harris said in a statement.
The opportunity to petition the school chancellor for a waiver is available to all
District parents, he said in the statement. Deputy Mayor Snowden did what any parent
would do by pursuing every available option when her child faced a challenge.
Henderson, who resigned from her post as chancellor last year, released a statement
last month responding to the initial ndings in a report that the Inspector General
presented to the D.C. Council about her alleged improper favoritism actions.
Among other things, she said she stood by her decision to make a very limited number
of discretionary placements of students when extraordinary circumstances applied, the
Post reported.

Trump extols religious freedom at Liberty University

In a commencement speech at a school with an anti-LGBT reputation, President
Trump extolled a recent executive order he signed in the name of religious freedom
that opponents say could lay the groundwork for anti-LGBT discrimination.
Trump made the remarks during his commencement speech Saturday at Liberty
University, saying in reference to the executive order he did some very important
signings recently for religious freedom.
America is better when people put their faith into action, Trump said. As long as I
am your president, no one is ever going to stop you from practicing your faith or from
preaching whats in your heart.
It wasnt clear whether Trump was referencing the issue of clerks refusing to marry
same-sex couples in his remarks, although he has endorsed religious freedom
legislation known as the First Amendment Defense Act that critics say would allow anti-
LGBT discrimination.

A prominent gay rights attorney is
among D.C. legal observers who are
optimistic about the person President
Trump reportedly is about to nominate
as the new United States Attorney for the
District of Columbia.
BuzzFeed News reported on May 11
that multiple sources familiar with the
nominating process said Trump was about
to name Asian American attorney Jessie
Liu, who previously served as an Assistant
U.S. Attorney in D.C. and worked for two
prominent local law rms, as his nominee
for the D.C. U.S. Attorneys position.
Unlike the 50 states and other cities
across the country, which have their
own elected district attorney and chief
prosecutor, the U.S. Attorney serves as
D.C.s top prosecutor for both federal and
local criminal cases involving serious crime.
During the Obama administration,
ocials with the U.S. Attorneys oce
reached out to D.C. LGBT organizations
monitoring anti-LGBT violence to
cooperate in eorts to obtain community
input in the sentencing phase for people

leadership of Chair Perez, Im ready to
jump in and help make this organization
more inclusive, eective, and inuential.
As CEO, OConnell will oversee the
day-to-day operations and DNC-wide
restructuring as the organization
charged with crimes against LGBT people.
LGBT rights attorney Paul Smith argued
before the U.S. Supreme Court in favor of
overturning anti-gay state sodomy laws
in the 2003 landmark case Lawrence v.
Texas. Smith told the Blade he got to know
Liu reasonably well when the two were
colleagues at the law rm Jenner & Block.
She is a Republican, but thats what you
would expect, said Smith in referring to a
U.S. Attorney appointed by a Republican
president.
On the other hand, she is a person
who practiced law very comfortably at a
law rm which is mostly full of Democrats
and a lot of gay people, Smith said.

Smith added that unless forced to do
so by higher ups he would not expect
Liu to discontinue the cooperation
between LGBT groups and the D.C. U.S.
Attorneys oce in cases involving the
prosecution of anti-LGBT hate crimes or
other matters.
From the standpoint of the LGBT
community, Smith said of Lius possible
nomination to be U.S. Attorney for D.C.,
With all the problems we have to worry
about this would not be one of them.
Jonathan Jeress, a defense attorney
in private practice who formerly worked
for D.C.s federal Public Defender Service,
expressed a view similar to Smith.

party and electing Democrats, Perez said
in a statement. She knows that we as a
party need to get back to basics. We need
to organize in every zip code and better
communicate our message of inclusion

when Democrats dont win, because we
are bearing witnesses to the chaos and
harm to working families that results with
Republicans at the helm.
Soon after his election as DNC chair,
Perez asked all top level ocials who were
previously at the organization to submit
their letters of resignation. But OConnells
appointment isnt a consequence of that
action. A DNC spokesperson said there
was no one in the role of chief executive
ocer at the time Perez came to the DNC.
Prior to her work at EMILYs List,
OConnell was senior vice president and
chief of sta for the Center for American
Progress and served as a progressive
activist for more than 20 years. She lives in
Maryland with her spouse Holly, a librarian
with Montgomery County Public Schools.

I think she is a very good choice.
She is a prosecutor who is tough but
fair. She is well liked in the D.C. legal
community.
The White House has declined to
comment on whether Liu will be the
presidents choice for the D.C. U.S.
Attorneys position.
If nominated and approved by the
Senate, Liu would replace D.C.s current
U.S. Attorney, Channing Phillips, who was
appointed by President Obama.

LGBT march in Havana
HAVANA The daughter of Cuban President Ral Castro on Saturday led a
march through the Cuban capital that commemorated the International Day
Against Homophobia and Transphobia.
Mariela Castro, who directs Cubas National Center for Sexual Education that is
known by the Spanish acronym CENESEX, and more than 2,000 people marched
from the Havanas oceanfront to a pavilion that is near the Habana Libre hotel in
the Vedado neighborhood.
She noted to her supporters after the march that CENESEX rst commemorated
the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia which is May 17
in 2007.
This years International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia campaign
will feature events in Havana and in the city of Santa Clara that highlight anti-
bullying eorts in Cuban schools. Mariela Castro told her supporters the
International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia commemorations help
promote acceptance of LGBT people on the Communist island.
Each time more people understand that homosexuality is not a sickness, but
phobias . . . continue to be, she said, referring to the previous International Day
Against Homophobia and Transphobia events that have taken place in Cuba.
People understand that homosexuality is not dangerous, but homophobia and
transphobia are.
CENESEX on Friday honored Rev. Troy Perry, who founded the Metropolitan
Community Church, at a gala in Havana. He is among those who rode alongside
Mariela Castro in 1950s-era cars and joined her on stage at the pavilion as she spoke.
New York City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, Gender Rights Maryland
Executive Director Dana Beyer, representatives of the British Embassy in Cuba
and Freedom to Work President Tico Almeida are among those who also attended
the march. Several Cuban LGBT rights advocates who work independently of
CENESEX and have publicly criticized Mariela Castro were also walking alongside
march participants and listening to her speech.
Im here to just lend support, solidarity, to build bridges with the community,
to let them know that they have support from the diaspora abroad, Mark-
Viverito, who is In Havana with a delegation of more than a dozen Latino leaders
from the U.S. and Puerto Rico, told the Washington Blade during an interview
before the march began.
Reynaldo, an activist from Havanas Playas del Este area who works with
CENESEX, told the Blade as he and a handful of his colleagues were standing
along the march route before it began that it is important to commemorate
the International Day Against Homophobia in Cuba because it is a Socialist,
machista and sexist country.
We have the need to make our ght against all types of discrimination,
whether it is because of sexual orientation, because of gender identity, more
visible, said Reynaldo. We have this need to be recognized socially.

Cuban activist prevented
from meeting U.S. counterparts
HAVANA An independent Cuban LGBT rights advocate claims authorities prevented
him from traveling to Havana late last week to meet with a delegation of U.S. advocates.
Nelson Gandulla, president of the Cuban Federation for LGBTI Rights, told the Washington
Blade he received a summons that ordered him to report to police headquarters in the
city of Cienfuegos at 8 a.m. on May 12 for an interrogation. The meeting between more
than a dozen independent Cuban activists and their U.S. counterparts who included
Equality Florida CEO Nadine Smith began in Havana at the same time.
Gandulla told the Blade the police called him and told him he wasnt able to go
to work because the director of the citys local health oce was going to be visiting.
Gandulla also said they told him he could not leave Cienfuegos Province or the country.
Gandulla said police on May 3 detained his partner in the street while working as
an independent journalist and interrogated him for two hours. He told the Blade the
agents who interrogated his partner took his camera, cell phone and tripod.
They wanted to send him to prison for illicit economic activities, Gandulla told the
Blade. They wanted to say that he receives money from abroad, which is not the case.
He has never received money. They threatened him that if they saw him on the street
lming or with a camera he would go directly to prison without a trial.
Gandulla has told the Blade in previous interviews that authorities have previously
detained and harassed him.
He said ocials at Havanas Jos Mart International Airport prevented him from
boarding a ight to Panama City in order to travel to the Colombian city of Cartagena for
a workshop that focused on documenting human rights abuses. Gandulla said security
agents visited his home ahead of then-President Obamas visit to Cuba in March 2016.
Gandulla and two independent LGBT activists were detained for several hours at
Jos Mart International Airport in 2015 when they returned to Cuba after attending
a workshop in Colombia. Authorities searched their luggage and conscated their
cameras and USB drives for 30 days.

Mariela Castro on Saturday led an LGBT march in Havanas Vedado neighborhood in
commemoration of the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia that
drew more than 2,000 people. LGBT-specic events are scheduled to take place in Santa
Clara and other cities across the country in the coming days.
Gandulla and other independent advocates many of whom met with the U.S.
advocates on Friday are critical of Mariela Castro on a host of issues. These include
marriage rights for same-sex couples, trans Cubans access to sex-reassignment surgery
and the countrys human rights record.
It was an honor to meet more than a dozen brave, Cuban LGBT advocates who are
part of organizations and campaigns that are independent of the Cuban government,
Smith told the Blade on Monday after she returned to the U.S. Despite the specter
of harassment and intrusive government surveillance, these leaders have organized in
favor of marriage equality and given voice to LGBT issues.
I learned a great deal in our lengthy discussions and they expressed deep
appreciation and a desire for greater engagement from the U.S. LGBT movement, she
added. Florida has a unique connection to Cuba and I will eagerly continue to assist
their eorts to secure equality and dignity for LGBT people.
The Blade has made repeated requests to interview Mariela Castro in Cuba. The
Cuban government has not responded to them.

Impeachment talk swirls after reports on Trump wrongdoing

with Russian diplomats and ring the FBI
director in what may be an act of retaliation
for refusing to drop an investigation has

On Tuesday, the Washington Post
broke the rst bombshell story, reporting
Trump in a meeting last week with Russian
Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov disclosed
code-word level classied information
on the Islamic State and intelligence
agencies had to work to contain the
damage. The White House denied the
accuracy of the report, but the next day
Trump said on Twitter he has the right to
disclose classied information, seemingly
corroborating the Post report.
Mike Sexton, a gay D.C.-based national
security analyst for a prominent security
and risk management rm, said Trumps
disclosure could disrupt U.S. relations
with Israel which was later reported
as the initial source of the information
and could indicate Trump wittingly or
not is a Russian pawn.
This damages our trust with our
closest ally in the Middle East and
will make it harder to succeed in our
counterterrorism eorts, Sexton said.
I think this underscores a point Michael
Hayden made during the election that
Trump may be a useful idiot

The next day, the New York Times
broke the major story about a memo

to drop the investigation of Flynns ties to
Russia. That account was corroborated
by FBI ocials aware of the conversation
between Comey and Trump.
A White House ocial in the aftermath
of the Washington Post report insisted
Trump at no time asked Comey to
discontinue his investigation of Flynn
before terminating the FBI director.
While the president has repeatedly
expressed his view that General Flynn is
a decent man who served and protected
our country, the president has never
asked Mr. Comey or anyone else to
end any investigation, including any
investigation involving General Flynn,
the ocial said. The president has the
utmost respect for our law enforcement
agencies, and all investigations. This is
not a truthful or accurate portrayal of
the conversation between the president
and Mr. Comey.
Vocal in calling to impeach Trump after
the reports was Rep. Al Green (D-Texas),
who called for Trumps removal from
oce on the House oor on the basis the
president engaged in obstruction of justice.
I do not do this for political purposes,
Mr. Speaker, Green said. I do this because
I believe in the great ideals that this country
stands for liberty and justice for all.
The more mainstream reaction from
congressional Democrats was a discharge
petition on Swalwell-Cummings
Protecting Our Democracy Act, which
would establish an independent,
bipartisan commission to investigate
Trump-Russia ties and interference in the
2016 presidential election.
Rep. Adam Schi (D-Calif.), among the
leaders of that eort and top Democrat of
the House Intelligence Committee, urged
Democrats in an interview Wednesday on
CNN not to rush to impeachment, saying
that would be a wrenching experience
for the country.
A Human Rights Campaign
spokesperson pointed to a video the
organization created a calling for a
special prosecutor and said thats all we
have at this point when asked about the
question of impeachment.
Shannon Minter, legal director for
the National Center for Lesbian Rights,
said an independent investigation is the
right course of action at this time, but
impeachment may be the appropriate
action after thats concluded.
Trumps impeachment could have
serious consequences for LGBT people.
It would elevate to the Oval Oce
Vice President Mike Pence, who has
had a strong relationship with social
conservatives and may seek to enable
anti-LGBT discrimination, such as by
signing a religious freedom executive
order, in ways thus far that Trump has
declined to do.
House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.),
whod be responsible for moving forward
with impeachment in the House, urged
against jumping to conclusions following
the Comey memo and said we need the
facts before proceeding.
Also reluctant to jump to conclusions
was Gregory Angelo, president of Log
Cabin Republicans, who compared media
reports on the Trump wrongdoing to press
accounts predicting hed sign an executive
order enabling anti-LGBT discrimination in
the name of religious freedom.

Picture it: President Trump enters the East Room of the White House on a
warm D.C. day in June to the sound of cheers from adoring members of the
LGBT community holding up their iPhones to document the occasion with
videos and photos.
With his daughter Ivanka Trump and son-in-law Jared Kushner at his side,
Trump welcomes guests and commemorates June as Pride month by recognizing
the LGBT communitys accomplishments in recent years.
Having trouble with this image? It could be because ofthe anti-LGBT positions
and actions Trump and his administration have taken or perhaps because such
an event would anger anti-LGBT groups that supported his election. It could be
because instead of cheering him, LGBT people angered by his policies would
boo Trump out of the room.
It might also be because recent reports Trump may have abused executive
power or committed obstruction of justice raise questions about whether
Trump will even be president in June.
Assuming Trump remains in oce, it remains to be seen what steps hell take, if any,
to recognize June as Pride month. Kelly Love, a White House spokesperson, said via
email when asked if Trump wouldissue a Pride proclamation or host a White House
Pride reception, We will let you know as soon as we announce our June proclamations.
During the 2016 election, Trump in an interview with ABC News Jonathan
Karl said hed look into whether he could issue a proclamation as president
recognizing June as Pride month, essentially dodging the question.
I would look into it, Trump said. And I feel so badly what happened [in
Orlando]. And we have to do something about it.
President Clinton started the tradition of issuing a proclamation to recognize
June as Pride month. Although President George W. Bush discontinued that
tradition, it was renewed by President Obama, who also in each of his years
in oce held a White House reception to celebrate Pride with members of the
LGBT community.
If Trump were to continue the recognition of June as Pride month with either a
proclamation or a reception, he would be the rst Republican president to do so.
It would also be consistent with his claims during the presidential campaignthat
hes a bigger friend to LGBT people than his opponent, Hillary Clinton.
Gregory Angelo, president of Log Cabin Republicans, said his group largely
alone among LGBT organizations that support and interact with the Trump
administration has proposed the idea of Trump recognizing Pride, but no
commitments weremade.
The suggestion has been formally made to the White House, Angelo said.
Conversations are ongoing. Its too soon to comment further.

D.C. police chief seeks to reassure LGBT community

entire community, Newsham said.
So if a particular community feels
as though the MPD in particular is not
deserving of attending one of their
events its hurtful, he said. But we
would obviously honor that request. We
wouldnt be involved in something if they
didnt want us to be there.
Members of No Justice No Pride have
said one reason they were opposed to
police presence at Capital Pride events is
some members of the LGBT community,
especially transgender women of color,
are uncomfortable in the presence of
uniformed police ocers.
A fear of the police by some trans women
stems from police tactics of enforcing so-
called prostitution-free zones in the city
by harassing and sometimes arresting
transgender women for merely walking
on the street, members of No Justice No
Pride have said.
The Blade asked Newsham, who has
been a member of the MPD since 1989, if
those allegations were true and whether
police have a policy or criteria for making
prostitution arrests involving trans women.
The rst part of the question as to
the relationship between the police
department and our transgender
community, I think if you look at the
history of policing across the country
police have not been particularly great
actors in developing that relationship,
Newsham said. There were a lot of I think
historically bad actions by the police in
that regard, he said.
And I think one of the things we
have tried is to regain the trust in the
transgender community in particular to
show them that here in the MPD we are
dierent, Newsham continued. We are
not like that to the extent that there was
that type of behavior in the past. Were not
going to be involved in that type of thing.
He added, If we do have individuals in
the police department who are involved in
treating anybody in our entire community
in an inappropriate or disrespectful way,
the managers at the Metropolitan Police
Department will take that very seriously
and it will be addressed.
With regards to prostitution, you
know that is the law here in the District
of Columbia that it is illegal, Newsham
said. And the only time that we should
be taking any action with regard to
prostitution is if there is probable cause
that its taking place.
He said anyone who feels they have
been treated improperly by police related
to enforcement of anti-prostitution
laws, especially members of the trans
community, they should le a complaint
at the police district station nearest to
where the incident happened.
He noted that if someone is
uncomfortable ling a complaint directly
with the police they have the option of
ling such a complaint with the citys
Oce of Police Complaints, which is an
independent city agency not connected
to the police department that investigates
complaints against police.
The last thing we want to do is harass
or intimidate anybody in our community,
Newsham said.
D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser named
Newsham as interim police chief last
September shortly after then Chief Cathy
Lanier announced she was retiring from the
force to become head of security operations
for the National Football League.
One of Newshams rst actions
as interim chief was to transfer the
departments community liaison units,
including the LGBT Liaison Unit, into
the Oce of the Chief of Police. He also
promoted gay longtime Sgt. Brett Parson
to the position of acting lieutenant and
returned Parson to his former role as
head of the liaison units.
Newsham said he believes elevating
the liaison units to the status of an arm
of the Oce of the Chief was necessary,
among other things, to send a signal
to the community that these units
representing the LGBT, Latino, Asian-
Pacic Islander, and Deaf and Hard of
Hearing communities is a top priority for
the department.
But he said the timing of his action was
also a response to the outcome of last
years presidential election.
After the election I think a lot of people in
this area, Washington, D.C. and the region,
felt a little bit uncomfortable, feeling like
the police department was going to change
because the federal administration had
changed, Newsham said. I thought that
was a good time for us to kind of signal that
we have not changed, he said.
Were going to remain the same
agency we have always been committed
to D.C. values. And that was kind of why I
did that and brought Brett back, he said.
Following is the text of Chief
Peter Newshams interview with the
Washington Blade on May 11:
Washington Blade: Can you tell a little
about the changes you have made with the
Metropolitan Police Departments LGBT
Liaison Unit since you became chief of police?
Peter Newsham: I think youre aware
that I moved all the special liaison units
under the Oce of the Chief of Police
under one of my directors, director Kelly
OMara. I also made Brett Parson an acting
lieutenant to oversee our LGBT Liaison
Unit. I have always felt maybe having them
report to the chiefs oce was a good idea.
But after the election I think a lot of people
in this area, Washington, D.C. and the
region, felt a little bit uncomfortable, feeling
like the police department was going to
change because the federal administration
had changed. I thought that was a good
time for us to kind of signal that we have not
changed. Were going to remain the same
agency we have always been -- committed
to D.C. values. And that was kind of why I did
that and brought Brett back.
I never really from where I sat understood
why Brett left. And when I approached him
and asked him to come back he seemed
like he was very happy to do it. And I
actually believe that he has become more
energized being back in that role. I think
that was a win-win for everyone.
Blade: Is he heading all of the liaison
units?
Newsham: He is.
Blade: One of the things some in the
community expressed concern about
prior to your becoming chief was that the
liaison units, particularly the LGBT Liaison
Unit, appeared to be shrinking in size due
to attrition and members who left were
not being replaced. Do you know what
the size of the LGBT Liaison Unit is now
and is there a policy for retaining its size
when members leave?
Newsham: Well you can never really
set a rm policy on a stang number
because the size of the department
right now uctuates. You have to sta
units proportionately for what you have
available for the entire city. But right now
we have one sergeant, Jessica Hawkins,
three ocers and two senior police ocers
who I think folks are very familiar with. And
then every month we have two aliates.
And I think youre familiar with our
aliate program where we bring folks in
who are interested and they work with
the unit and they learn some of the skills
that the unit has and then they actually
go back to their district. We have an LGBT
community throughout the entire city.
And the idea behind having the aliates
is its a kind of training.
First of all they become familiar with
some of the leaders in the community.
And they also learn from some of the
experts who have been in the liaison unit
for a period of time. And then they can take
those skills back to their district. I think that
part of the program is a very good part of it.
So to answer your question, I have no
intention right now to increase or reduce the
size of it. I have not heard any concerns from
the community that they felt like the unit
was not sucient. As a matter of fact, the
feedback Im getting now is the people are
very pleased to see Brett back in the unit.
Blade: Another concern that had been
expressed prior to you becoming chief was
that the permanent members of the liaison

units were required to spend a certain
period each month on another assignment
unrelated to the liaison unit. In some cases
we were told they were being assigned to
unrelated duties each day during their shift
possible due to a shortage of patrol ocers
throughout the department. Is that still
going on and can that be addressed in a
way that would enable the liaison ocers
to spend all of their time in those units?
Newsham: Well I dont think it is going
on. My understanding is that the folks that
are assigned to the unit are working in the
unit. I dont know of any shortages right now
where we would need to pull them for other
assignments. Whenever we mobilize the police
department all of our police ocers need to
be involved. But thats pretty infrequent. And
the other piece to this is we expect all of our
police ocers, if something were to happen
in an emergency type situation that they
would take police action. So that would take
them outside of their normal role. But other
than those few instances theyre going to be
committed to the unit.
Blade: Is there still some type of LGBT
related training that takes place at the
police academy or that might apply to
ocers already on the force?
Newsham: Yes they do have that
training. All of our recruit ocers are
trained. And then all of our ocers per
year get four hours in class and four hours
online with an emphasis on transgender
bias related crimes and intimate partner
violence in the LGBT community. So thats
something I think were going to be doing
ongoing for the next several years.
Blade: Is that for the academy and for
ocer that are already on the force?
Newsham: Exactly. So the recruits
get it but also all of our ocers in our
professional development training get it.
Blade: In the last week or two there have
been some issues going on related to the
annual LGBT Pride events. A dissident group
has surfaced that wants to change the Pride
events in various ways including banning
the police from marching in the parade and
being present at the Pride festival the day
after the parade. Have you heard about
that? Do you have any thoughts about that?
Newsham: I have. I have been
following that. There seems to be a
group that is opposed to some of the
things that the folks that are organizing
the Pride event are doing. And a couple
of the things I have seen is there is some
opposition to some of the sponsors. And
like you said, theres some opposition to
police involvement. Whenever we have
an event here in the city of large groups
we do whatever we can to facilitate that.

Baltimore City government has been a key partner in the success of the annual
Baltimore Pride celebration over the years. This year is no exception as Mayor
Catherine Pugh and her administration are supporting Pride.
Anthony McCarthy, the mayors director of communications, told the Blade he
is excited about what the city is planning for Pride 2017.
The mayor is working with the Pride committee to provide a stage for the

It Gets Better may be harmful: study

NEW YORK A new study from the University of Arizona nds that the
message of the It Gets Better video series, started in 2010 to combat LGBT teen
suicide, may not be eective, New Now Next and other outlets report.
The video series, in which LGBT people from all walks of life assure viewers
their lives will improve in time, may do more harm than good according to Russell
Toomey, a University of Arizona professor whose team examined proles of 245
LGB young adults to see how they coped with sexual-minority stress during
adolescence, New Now Next reports.
Three common strategies emerged: Cognitive strategies (the It Gets Better

Same-sex couples win Walmart lawsuit
BOSTON A federal judge approved a $7.5 million settlement Monday in a

class-action lawsuit against Walmart that found the retail giant violated gender-
discrimination laws for years when it denied spousal benets to same-sex
couples, the Boston Globe reports.

The lawsuit was led on behalf of a New Bedford woman by the advocacy
group GLAD. The settlement was based in large part on U.S. Supreme Court
rulings arming the rights of same-sex couples to marry and, in an earlier
ruling, their entitlement to federal spousal benets, the Globe reports.
The lead plainti was Jacqueline Cote, who worked at Walmart for 15 years,
though more than 300 plaintis joined the class-action lawsuit.
After attorneys fees are paid, the plaintis will split the roughly $5.5 million
balance from the settlement, which U.S. District Judge William G. Young called
fair and reasonable, according to the Boston Globe.
Wal-Mart Stores Inc. had agreed in 2014 to provide spousal benets for same-
sex partners, and roughly 1,200 employees signed up for the benets at the
time. That decision came after the Supreme Court struck down the federal
Defense of Marriage Act, which barred the federal government from recognizing
same-sex marriages in states where it was allowed, the Globe reports.
But for three years before 2014, the company refused to pay spousal benets
to employees in same-sex marriages, according to the settlement.

Enzyme key to ushing out hidden HIV: study

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. Scientists at the Gladstone Institutes discovered that an
enzyme called SMYD2 could be a new therapeutic target for ushing out the HIV
that hides in infected individuals. Overcoming this latent virus remains the most
signicant obstacle to a cure, amfAR, the Foundation for AIDS Research, said in
a press release.
While drug therapy allows people living with HIV to lead relatively normal
lives, it also comes with adverse eects. In addition, patients must stay on the
drugs for life to prevent the virus hiding in their body from reactivating. In the
early stages of infection, HIV hides in viral reservoirs in a type of immune cells
called Tcells. This dormant, or latent, virus can then spontaneously reactivate
and rekindle infection if drug therapy is stopped.
To eliminate HIV latency, scientists are exploring a shock-and-kill strategy
that would use a combination of drugs to wake up the dormant virus, then act

Previous research has had limited success in eciently reactivating latent HIV,
so scientists are working to nd new, more eective drugs.

I hate to rain on liberals making a parlor
game of Trumps Final Days, but we are get-
ting ahead of ourselves.
Conservative British journalist Louise
Mensch, citing unnamed sources, paints a wild
scenario on her Patribotics blog: Vice Presi-
dent Pence and Speaker Ryan are excluded
from presidential succession due to their own
wrongdoing, leaving Orrin Hatch as President
Pro Tem of the Senate to succeed a toppled
Trump. Another scenario making the rounds
assumes Nancy Pelosi will be Speaker by the
time Trump and Pence are forced out. She will
become president, then name Hillary Clinton as
veep and resign in her favor. I am totally down
with the Sisterhood, but this makes House of
Cards look like Washington Week in Review.
Granted, President Chaos has provided
plenty of fodder for liberal fantasists. His r-
ing of FBI Director James Comey last week
brought comparisons to President Nixon. The
dierence is that Nixon was smarter and bet-
ter prepared as president. Trumps blundering
Oval Oce meeting with Russian diplomats,
in which their cameras were welcomed while
American photojournalists were barred, ap-
peared as trolling by a headstrong man heed-
less of consequence or disrepute.
Trumps eorts to shut down the Russia-
gate investigation do not suggest innocence.
But there is no reason to expect his exit any
time soon short of a stunning revelation not
yet in evidence. Yes, his uninformed, impul-
sive style had him telling The Economist that
he invented the well-worn phrase prime the
pump. His insults and threats cement his im-
age as a wannabe dictator.
But who will slay the dragon? Conserva-

tives, bent on clinging to power at any price,
circle their wagons while liberals resume
their circular ring squad. Funny memes
will not regain control of the House. There
is a lot of old-fashioned electoral work to do,
amid a leftist undertow that could help keep
the right in power.
An example is the attack on D.C.s Capital
Pride by radicals whose insults are about as
well-aimed as a drive-by shooting. Demands
that Pride expel police and corporate spon-
sors, while extreme, are not the biggest prob-
lem the controversy reveals. In the name of
queers, trans folk, and people of color, radi-
cals employ an abusive tone that demands
rather than engages. Even those who have
long worked productively across lines of race,
religion and gender identity are treated as
collaborators with the enemy if we object to
unrepresentative zealots packing a meeting
to take over a community-based organization.
These destructive tactics suggest that main-
stream liberals must contend with their left
ank, not just the right. A divide-and-conquer
strategy was used against progressives by the
FBI in the 1960s. Whether the latest interne-
cine strife is caused by government-paid agent
provocateurs or spoiled millennials hardly
matters if the result is the same.
Maximalist dogma from the left is as o-
putting as it is from the right. Without respect-
ing diverse views, there is little chance of craft-
ing progressive policies or electing majorities
to pass them.
Across America, LGBT battles are a mixed
bag. The U.S. Supreme Court rejected a chal-
lenge to the California ban on conversion
therapy for minors. On the other hand, the
Supreme Court of West Virginia ruled that anti-
gay assaults are not hate crimes. A bill passed
the Texas House of Representatives allowing
faith-based discrimination in adoptions. On
another front, Trump signed an executive or-
der creating a voting integrity commission to
justify voter suppression.
Washington is an establishment town that
draws career-minded, pragmatic people; but
it also has many universities and think tanks.
Discussions that recall 1960s coeehouse
theorizing about the revolution ignore the
concerns of those not in the room: voters who
stayed away.
The world roils while American leftists ma-
lign their allies. Chechen police have been or-
dered to hunt gays. The plight of gay Ugandan
refugees in Kenya grows worse. A murderous
wave of violence targets trans women in El Sal-
vador. Meanwhile, Je Sessions is still Attorney
General with his racist, sexist, nativist, and ho-
mophobic impulses intact. Betsy DeVos is still
Education Secretary despite being dissed by
Bethune-Cookman grads. And so on.
We have a long slog of organizing ahead.
Chanting slogans at a rally may rouse you, but
please do not mistake it for the hard work of
coalition.

A surreal week that must
lead to impeachment
PETER ROSENSTEIN is a D.C.-based LGBT rights
and Democratic Party activist. He writes regularly
for the Blade.
There are many things you can read
into President Trumps ring of FBI Direc-
tor James Comey. He wants us to believe
its strength and decisiveness. The reality
is more likely fear that the noose is clos-
ing around him and his associates with
regard to the FBI nding evidence of col-
lusion with the Russians.
The memo Rod Rosenstein drafted for
Trump to use to justify the ring was well
written. Had Obamas Attorney General
Loretta Lynch presented that to him most
of us would have found it totally plausible
to re Comey on the spot. What he did

Homophobic incident in Va. brings teachable moment
Explaining subtle forms
of bias to a straight ally

Two weeks ago, my straight neighbor
Janet and I attended a gardening seminar
at a Northern Virginia nursery. The speak-
er passed out PowerPoint slides of her
presentation and began her demonstra-
tion. Slide 3 was the photo of a garden in
a D.C. nightclub. As she began discuss-
ing it, the speaker dropped her voice to
a conspiratorial whisper. This was a gay
bar, she hissed. continuing sotto voce,
Now I dont want you to think I work in
a gay bar.
What was that about? I wondered.
Was it a feeble attempt at a joke at my ex-
pense? I was more than mildly annoyed,
knowing that I had just experienced ho-
mophobia in suburban Fairfax County.
Slide 33 was the photo of yet another
nightclub garden she had landscaped.
There was no mention of clientele or
ownership. So why had she singled out
during the campaign with regard to Hill-
ary was outrageous.
Now, seven months later, Comey is
red after Trump declared his undying
love and admiration for Comey during the
campaign and again after he was sworn
in. Maybe he thought doing so would in-
oculate him against any FBI investigation?
Trump red him without any warning,
even to his communications sta, and
writes the letter of dismissal himself. It
had to be him because no lawyer would
be associated with it. He is ring a man
at the pinnacle of his career, throws in a
paragraph thanking Comey for telling him
he is not under investigation, and then
wishes him luck in his future endeavors.
Then Trumps communication sta eral prosecutor Preet Bharara, then act-
struggles to respond to questions. His
spokesperson hides in the bushes to
avoid being seen on camera. Reports
surface Trump is yelling at the TV when
no one is defending what he just did. He
sends out the person who some outlets
wont book anymore, Kellyanne Conway.
She, who introduced us to the term alter-
native facts, appeared on CNN with An-
derson Cooper and responded to one of
his questions saying, Anderson you are
using the wrong set of facts. Really? Then
the gay nightclub, I continued to won-
der. Why did she have to label it? Did she
have a problem with working for a gay
clientele? There were no answers yet.
On the drive home, Janet could not
understand why I was oended. I had
to explain that she chose to drop her
voice when discussing her work at a gay
nightclub; that she made some feeble at-
tempt at humor by adding that she didnt
want us to think she worked at a gay
club and that only the gay bar had been
mentioned as having a specic clientele.
Why single out just one club among the
several where she had worked? Slowly
Janet started to get it. She was having a
teachable moment about having just wit-
nessed homophobia in action.
That evening I e-mailed the managers
of the nightclub and the garden center re-
peating the speakers comments, stating
I was oended by the latent homopho-
bia on display that day. And then I slept
soundly, the matter forgotten.
The nightclub manager e-mailed me
the next morning. He was equally sur-
prised by the comments and thanked me
she proceeded to ght with Chris Cuomo,
making herself and her boss look even
more ridiculous. Me thinks Kellyanne
will go back in the closet, so to speak.
Then Trump in an interview with Lester
Holt, contrary to what the White House
spokespeople have said, asserts the ring
of Comey was all his idea.
Then he proclaimed loudly that the in-
vestigation is all fake news and there is
no collusion with the Russians. Then to
add to the farce the only White House
publicly scheduled appointment for the
day is a meeting with the Russian for-
eign minister and Russian ambassador/
spymaster. As if all the rings dont look

ing with Henry Kissinger on the same day.
Then Trump threatens Comey, suggest-

a photo of Kissinger on his knees with
Trump praying as he supposedly did with
Nixon; though at 94 chances are Kissinger
wouldnt be able to get up again.

apologized profusely that I had been of-
fended and stated that the garden was
supportive of gay causes, and on and
on. The only comment that missed when

I cut to the chase, explaining that what
I wanted was not an apology but for this
woman to have a teachable moment,
to ask herself why she had singled out
the gay nightclub with a specic label
but not the other establishments where
she designed gardens. The garden cen-
ter representative assured me that she
had learned that lesson and had had a
sleepless night, to boot, for the nightclub
manager had phoned her to repeat her
oensive remarks to her. Smug that I had
struck a blow for gay consciousness, I for-
got all about the matter.

Clearly, with all the reporting and leaks
from the White House, Department of
Justice and FBI all leaking like sieves
it wont be long before we see some in-
dictments. We have heard there is one or
more grand jury sitting on this case. Sub-
poenas have been issued by the Senate
Intelligence Committee for documents
from Mike Flynn. Deputy AG Rosenstein
stated he wrote the memo after being
asked by Trump to justify the ring and
its even reported he threatened to resign
if the idea was attributed to him. One of
the only things he can do to reclaim his
reputation is to name a special counsel.
He has the authority to do that as Attor-
ney General Sessions has recused himself
Rosenstein in charge. The problem with
a special counsel is it could take years to
do his/her work and much of it would be
done in secret.
At a minimum, this should play out with
Democrats winning the House of Repre-
sentatives in 2018 at which time they could
vote to impeach Trump and send articles
of impeachment to the Senate. That would
eectively end Trumps ability to move for-
ward the disastrous policies he and his far-
right administration are advocating.

can. Some in West Virginia y Confeder-
ate battle ags on their homes because
they are proud of their heritage. (Thats
the way I rationalize it to myself, anyway.)
When I walked across the road to Janets
house the next day, I had my answer. We
LGBT people are proud of who we are.
The ag is a visible symbol of our pride.
Its just as simple as that. And that was my
very own teachable moment.

say the only constant is change, and
thats certainly true here as several
local businesses popular with the LGBT
community closed in the o season,
including leather bar the Double L, Proud
Bookstore and the Lula Brazil restaurant.
Despite the closures, many businesses
here are LGBT-owned, and almost all are
friendly to the community.
A number of places have called
Rehoboth home for many years, including
Blue Moon (35 Baltimore Ave.), Loris
Caf (39 Baltimore Ave.), Purple Parrot
(134 Rehoboth Ave.), and Coee Mill
(Rehoboth Mews, 127 Rehoboth Ave.),
while some are newcomers.
The Blue Moon, now in its 36th
season, will continue to oer some of
the best dining in Rehoboth as well as
entertainment almost nightly, featuring
recording star Pamala Stanley who will be
performing Sundays through Thursdays,
bingo on Tuesday nights with divas, and

How long have you been out and who
was the hardest person to tell?
Ive been out for more than 25 years.
Initially telling my parents was dicult. I
had been in a relationship (with my now
husband) for perhaps a year and the
challenge of keeping that important portion
of my life closed o from my parents
certainly outweighed any fear of rejection.
Whos your LGBT hero?
I think out politicians such as Barney Frank
paved the way for the very important
activism that followed.
Whats Washingtons best nightspot,
past or present?
I will give the nod to Tracks, both for the
many fun nights I had there and also
because I now work in that neighborhood
so many years afterwards. Being part of
transformation of an area once known for
warehouse clubs into a vibrant community
of homes, shops and parks is very
rewarding.
Describe your dream wedding.
We nailed it on roughly our 20th
anniversary. Our sons were our best
men. We were surrounded by friends and
family on a beautiful night that included a
meaningful service and a great celebration.

I have an internal moral compass to which

leaders?
Include everyone. While the movement
has added more letters and in some ways
has become more fragmented, we need to
bring everyone forward together.
What would you walk across hot coals
for?
My sons, my husband, my family and
friends. All the material things can be
replaced or preserved in memories.
What LGBT stereotype annoys you
most?
Materialism. Portions of our community
are targeted and valued for their power as
consumers. I think the history of activism,
social justice and caring are unfortunately
overlooked.
Whats your favorite LGBT movie?
I have a long-standing joke with my
husband about Andr Tchin and Wild
Reeds, which we never saw, but seemed
to be previewed extensively in front of
many mediocre movies we actually did see.
I think I made us go to a bad sci- movie
over Wild Reeds back in the day and then
it closed.
Whats the most overrated social
custom?
Tolerance and equal time for opinions
science or society have already settled. For
me as a parent, the issue of marriage and
parenting are settled. I dont think there
needs to be a counter-point to the dangers
of smoking or climate change.
What trophy or prize do you most covet?
A good nights sleep.
What do you wish youd known at 18?
Enjoy everything and learn from everything
if you can. With 18 far in the rear-view
mirror, I have few regrets and was shaped
by trying new things.
Why Washington?
Washington has all the benets of bigger
cities but in many ways it is a small town.
I love running into friends in unexpected

Trans Pride is this weekend

Teen activist Gavin Grimm is
keynote speaker on Saturday

Capital Trans Pride kicks o its three-
day celebration with a meet and greet with
previous Engendered Spirit Awardees,
local community activists and supporters
at Whitman-Walker Health (1525 14th St.,
N.W.) on Friday, May 19 from 6-8 p.m.
On Saturday, May 20 Capital Trans
Pride Day will be at Studio Theatre (1501
14th St., N.W.), with special guest Gavin
Grimm from 9 a.m.-7p.m.
The days festivities will include
educational workshops and panel
discussions covering topics such as
resume building and employment
discrimination, health insurance
coverage, HIV prevention, legal name
and gender change and more. The
Resource Fair will host more than 25
vendors, agencies and organizations with
resources for the community.
The Reel Trans Film Festival will present
a screening of MAJOR!, a documentary
about transgender activist Miss Major
Grin-Gracy (see review below), from
1:30-3:30 p.m. The lm chronicles Grin-
Gracys ght for the rights of transgender
women of color. Grimm, a TIME 100
honoree, will also make an appearance.
There will be coee, drinks and snacks for
attendees. Admission is free.
New Hope Baptist United Church of
Christ (309 E St., N.W.) hosts a special
transgender-focused service on Sunday,
May 21 at 2 p.m. Rev. Kenneth King will
lead the service.

A Major! gure for trans rights

MISS MAJOR GRIFFIN-GRACY, the subject of a new documentary, is a pioneer of the trans community. Her life will be celebrated in a documentary shown this weekend at Capital Trans Pride.

Major! is a lively and inventive documentary by Annalise Ophelian that captures
the wild spirit and erce engagement of the indomitable Miss Major Grin-Gracy, a
fabulous trans activist whos been part of the struggle for human rights since the 1950s.
Sponsored by Reel Armations, Major! screens on Saturday May 20 at 1:30 p.m. at
the Studio Theatre as part of Capital Trans Pride. Tickets are free.
The movie opens by chronicling Miss Majors work with the Transgender Gender
Variant Intersex Justice Project, a group founded by Alex Lee to support transgender
women (especially women of color) who have been imprisoned. This section includes
moving testimonials from several of the women Grin-Gracy has worked with and who
consider themselves part of Miss Majors family.
The lm then tracks Grin-Gracys amazing life. Born in Chicago in 1940, the teen-
aged Grin-Gracy discovered the citys fabulous drag balls. Under the care of the drag
community, Miss Major started learning how to express her true self. Likening herself
to the title character in Gypsy, she remembers saying to the mirror, Theres Major.
Where the hell have you been?
From there, Grin-Gracys life has taken her across the country and through several
of the dening moments of recent LGBT history. She moved to New York to become a
performer at the Jewel Box Revue and was a leader during the Stonewall Riots. Since
then, she has worked tirelessly and selessly as an activist for the trans community.
Major! is a thoroughly entertaining and informative documentary. The award-
winning lm combines archival footage with poignant interviews with Grin-Gracy and
a wide circle of friends and associates, including activist and scholar Angela Y. Davis. The
material is neatly organized under several broad categories (including justice, history.
roots and power) and is punctuated with delightful animations by Wriply Bennet. The
whimsical music by Star Amerasu provides an eective light-hearted counterpart to a
life full of ups and downs.
Major! is a must-see movie for anyone worried about how we will survive the current
political debacle. Its a vivid portrait of a woman who has triumphed over incredible
odds and made important contributions to the LGBT community for decades. The story
of Miss Major Grin-Gracy is inspirational, not just for her incredible accomplishments,
but for her resilient spirit fueled by equal measures of compassion, love, an eclectic
sense of style, a passion for justice and a wicked sense of humor.

ceremony was held at the historic Lincoln
Theatre and awards were given in parallel

Lawrence Redmond, both Helen Hayes

In traditional Helen Hayes Awards
form, the audience seated in the balcony
stomped, shrieked and hooted loudly
for favorites. But by far the loudest
applause and longest standing ovation of
the evening went not to a winner but to
surprise presenter Supreme Court Justice
Ruth Bader Ginsburg. A familiar face in
Washington theater audiences, Ginsburg
presented the Helen Hayes Tribute to
fellow octogenarian Ted Van Griethuysen.
The revered actor who came to
Washington 30 years ago at 52 to
do classics at Shakespeare Theatre

Freedom to Marry, a documentary lm
from Eddie Rosenstein that screens twice
in the coming days in the D.C. area.
The Freedom to Marry spotlights
key gures in the same-sex marriage
movement including Freedom to
Marry Founder Evan Wolfson, National
Campaign Manager Marc Solomon,
marriage plaintis April DeBoer and Jayne
Rowse and Mary Bonauto, a civil rights
attorney from GLAD (Gay and Lesbian
Advocates and Defenders).
Rosenstein, a straight ally, says the
idea for the documentary came to him
while talking to his teen children about
changing the world. After they insisted
nobody actually does anything, he
remembered Wolfson, a neighborhood
kid he had grown up with in Pittsburgh.
My mom would always call and say
Evan is on Face the Nation, Rosenstein couple is just one of many who were
says. When the moment came that the
Supreme Court was actually going to take
the case, I realized that this was game
day. This could be the moment where
they either summit or implode.
After reaching out to Wolfson asking to
lm a documentary, Rosenstein was on
the eld shooting two days later.
Wolfsons upbringing in an ordinary
Jewish household, coming out to his
parents and his growing dedication to
the ght for same-sex marriage, prep
the scene for the founding of Freedom
to Marry. The lm launches into a brief
overview of gay rights history, including
the 1993 Hawaii Supreme Court case
followed by the Defense of Marriage Act,
before settling into the nitty gritty of the
more recent ght for same-sex marriage
when the Supreme Court ruled in
Obergefell v. Hodges in 2015 that same-
sex couples deserved the right to legally
wed. Solomon, who will appear for a Q&A
after the May 24 screening, also shares
his story from coming out to his parents

Cameras follow the Freedom to Marry
crew as they coach LGBT people on how
to have conversations with their straight
friends and family on why marriage is
important to them. The group gives surveys
to straight people to nd the reasons they
believe gay couples want marriage. After
discovering the answers were more for
benets than love and compassion, the
organization switches gears to create a
media campaign that shows gay couples
showcasing loving behavior.
In a similar vein to the campaign,
Rosenstein introduces Supreme Court
marriage plaintis DeBoer and Rowse
who are raising their adopted children
together.

ground work, Bonauto has been working
to prepare her oral arguments before the
Supreme Court. Bonauto is noticeably
nervous in the lm as she drops her
suitcase while entering the building.
Later, she listens back to her arguments
against the Supreme Court, pausing the
audio every few seconds to make a critical
remark about her performance.

If youre gonna record at the legendary
Argent Studios in Memphis and call the
resulting album Third (an homage to the
1978 classic of the same name by power-
pop heroes Big Star), you better have the
goods to back it up.
Fortunately, up-and-coming singer/
songwriter/musician Cait Brennan has
delivered an album worthy of its historic
Audacious, uproarious black comedy birthplace. It has not been an easy road
for Brennan, whos transgender, and her
(New York Times) life experience has provided rich material
for compelling songwriting, although she
certainly knows how to tell a story as well.

start to nish, a well-crafted retro-leaning

never leave you bored.
Brennans musical trajectory has gone
nowhere but upward since her debut
eort Debutante from last year. Her
WOOLLY MAMMOTH THEATRE COMPANY songwriting is more condent and self-

and the mixing, which was an issue
on Debutante, is vastly improved.
Overall Third is more polished and
professional. Brennan once again works
with collaborator Fernando Perdomo, and
together theyve crafted a highly melodic
collection of guitar-based power pop thats
at once personal but also highly accessible.
There is a denite retro feel to Third.
Songs like the infectious Shake Away,
with its ultra-tight harmonies, and
Benedict Cumberbatch, with its 70s
arena-rock vibe, would sound fantastic on
classic rock radio, tting right alongside
bands like Cheap Trick, the Knack, the
Rubinoos and of course Big Star. Shake
Away and the hard-driving The Angels
Lie are also fast-paced retro-rockers with
prominent harmonies, all with strong
melodies. Just about any track on the
album, apart from a few of the more

potential singles.
Album opener Bad at Apologies is
an edgy and intensely personal blues
rocker thats probably the strongest track
on the album. It opens boldly with the
memorable line, Yeah Im the asshole
who stole your boyfriend.
Stack Overow has a manic energy
and He Knows Too Much goes even
deeper back into musical history than late
70s power pop, touching upon late 50s
and early 60s inuences.
At the End of the World, an epic
rock waltz with an ambitious full-band
arrangement, practically screams to be
performed live. A Hard Man to Love, with
its insanely catchy chorus and delightfully
swirling string arrangement, is a cleverly
built number that unexpectedly ends
with a bit of Caribbean avor.
Perhaps the most achingly personal
track is Catiebots Dont Cry. Placed mid-
way through the set and stretching to
nearly six minutes, it might be considered
the albums centerpiece. Brennan begins
with a beautiful falsetto wrought with
vulnerability before her multi-layered self-
harmonizing begins over bluesy guitar licks.
Its a heartbreaker on an album that runs a
full range of human emotion.
After the raucous The Angels Lie,
the album eases into a more generally
downbeat direction, winding down from
a set of high-energy rockers to show
a dierent side to Brennans musical
identify. Collapse is a wrenching baring
of the soul, the expression of an individual
spiraling into a period of personal crisis.
Perish the Thought is Brennans
typically thoughtful reection on the
state of our current political situation.
The album closes with the somber waltz
Goodbye Missamerica, with Brennan
channeling classic Elton John as shes
accompanied by a mournful organ
accompaniment.
Cait Brennan is a rising talent. Debutante
showed a great deal of promise and Third
delivers on that potential. Perhaps a bit
of sameness creeps in on some of the
straightforward harmony-heavy power-
pop numbers, but they are so entertaining
that it hardly matters.

United in Scandal
D.C.-based gay rugby team
draws diverse players

This week in the continuing spotlight
series on the LGBT sports community in
Washington, we visit with two gay rugby
players from the Washington Scandals.
The Scandals were formed in 2013
and have carved out a niche playing in
weekend matches along with traveling to
tournaments along the Eastern Seaboard.
Next year they will attend their rst match
overseas when they journey to Bingham
Cup 2018 in Amsterdam.
After graduating from Georgetown
University, Joshua Street found himself
settling into the routine of life after
college. Work, gym and then home. It was
a pattern he was looking to change.
He had heard good things about the
Washington Scandals and signed up to
play when he saw them at Capital Pride in
2016. He went through their conditioning
rst and then had an eye-opening visual
at his rst practice.
I saw this really big guy tackle a small guy
and I immediately wondered if a theater
major should be attempting to t into this
culture, Street says. The team was super
supportive and assured me that when I was
ready, they would get me there.
Street, who works in insurance and risk
management, was born in Texas and grew
up in Surinam, and Antigua and Barbuda
with his Southern Baptist missionary
parents. His athletic endeavors consisted
of intramural soccer and volleyball.
His rst rugby match with the Scandals
was in Toronto and he says that it was
a good learning experience and crash
course into the sport of rugby.
I tested everything that the Scandals
had taught me, especially that you have
to push through obstacles whether they
are mental or physical, Street says. It
was very satisfying to be able to put what
I had learned in practice into a game
situation and amazing to think that I was
a rugby player.
Since that rst match in Toronto, Street
has settled into the rugby community
and has traveled with his teammates
to Charleston, Philadelphia, Charlotte

and Baltimore. Hes social chair for the
Scandals and loves the way the gay rugby
community pushes each other in a game
then gets together socially afterwards.
There is always trepidation before a
game because you know you are going to
take some hits. All the nerves end up falling
away because all these cogs are in motion
and working as a team, Street says. I
have found what I was looking for with the
Scandals by getting out of that daily routine
and nding an incredible support system.
As a young kid in Liverpool, N.Y., Shane
Hickey tried multiple sports including
cross-country running but never found
one that he fell in love with. He took
a break from sports activities while
attending Georgetown University where
he was active on the school newspaper.
His path changed after a Scandals
player told him he looked like someone
who could play rugby. He signed up to
play in September of 2013 and found
himself smitten.
My rst practice was on a Thursday
and my rst match was two days later.
It was trial by re and I fell in love
immediately, Hickey says. Realizing that
I had so much more to learn was both a
thrill and a rush.
Hickey, who works in interlibrary
services at American University, wasnt
sure if he could handle the sport at rst
but after years of playing, he has found
happiness in being part of the rugby
community. Hes a co-captain and is in his
third year as a Scandals board member.
This environment creates a space that
allows people to learn about themselves
which is one of the reasons I continue to
be involved, Hickey says. Playing other
teams who are just like us is amazing and
our tournaments and matches become
weekend events.
Hickey has also traveled extensively
with the Scandals and says he will
continue with the team even if he ever
gets to a point where he cant play
anymore. Hes taking courses to become
certied as a referee.
I love rugby and I love the brotherhood.
It has made me a lot more condent as a
person and has become a huge focus in
my life. All rugby, all the time, Hickey says.
Another plus has been that the team has
exposed me to the LGBT community.

If youre into pure American muscle, its
hard to resist the Dodge Challenger. Not
to knock Mustangs, but like Starbucks you
can probably nd one on every corner.
Its the Challengers exclusivity that helps
set it apart.
But so does the iconic nasty-boy
styling, which Dodge wisely left intact the
past decade. The base V6 engine is no
slouch, but the libidinous 485-hp V8 in
the R/T Scat Pack model packs a wallop.
That exhaust roar alone sounds like you
just woke the Hulk and hes not happy
about it.
There are other Challenger versions,
including a 707-hp SRT Hellcat and
upcoming 840-hp SRT Demon announced
at last months New York Auto Show, but
these bruiser cruisers come with much
heftier price tags.
By comparison, the R/T Scat Pack is a
bargain ride. Its also surprisingly rm but
Indra Mustapha pleasant, even on long road trips. The

responsive steering helps, as does the
relatively quiet interior.
Braking and acceleration are both
strong yet very smooth. And on a car
this large and heavy, theres bound to be
some body roll. But theres also plenty
of legroom, a fairly roomy backseat and
a humongous trunk, perfect for anyone
who doesnt travel lightly.

For a bit less power but a lot more
luxury, theres the Inniti Q60. The
racy, rousing Red Sport 400 is the high-
performance model. With sexy, svelte-
like sheet metal, this souped-up coupe is
more akin to the Flash than the hulking
Dodge Challenger. Its still lightening fast,
with a 400-hp V6 turbo that comes with
optional all-wheel drive.
But sadly, theres no fun-loving manual
transmission like there is in the Challenger.
Thats a bummer, but not exactly a deal
breaker. On the upside, the Q60s body roll
is practically non-existent and the braking
is nonpareil for a coupe at this price. In
the cabin, the space-age dash is full of
dramatic curves, and the door panels
are so perfectly sculpted they look good
enough to be in a MOMA exhibit.
Its also as silent as a museum inside,
thanks to the sublime sound insulation
that cancels out any outside noise. High-
end amenities include heated steering
wheel, 360-degree parking camera,
air-ltration system and auto-dimming
outside mirrors.
Along with the latest safety features,
the Q60 also comes with a blind-
spot intervention system that steers
the car if the driver doesnt heed its
warnings (control issues perhaps?) and a
collision/braking system that can detect
pedestrians or potential accidents ahead.

My wife and I got married last August.
We were such a happy couple until the
wedding. Our friends used to say they
were going to get diabetes from being
around us because we were so gooey.
Now we are arguing way too often.
And it really started with the wedding,
over a ridiculous disagreement. Were we
both going to wear white dresses? Jen
had her heart set on that, but I thought it
was a dumb lesbian clich and wore a tux
(which I guess is another dumb lesbian
clich but more my style). I felt Jens
anger and disappointment during the
whole wedding.
Since then all sorts of things set us
o. What route to take when we visit her
parents? Can you please turn down the
TV volume? Whose turn it is to change the
cat litter? Please dont look at your phone
when Im talking to you. How should we
celebrate our rst anniversary (which we
dont actually feel like doing anymore)?
Why do you have that tone in your voice?
The problem is, sometimes I do have a
tone in my voice. Shell seem angry at me
and then Im on edge and angry at her.
Shell seem pissed o and I get fed up
and dont want to keep being conciliatory.
Probably if you asked her, shed say I
start it. And sometimes Im sure I do. I
dont want to be angry, but I dont want
to always have to say yes to keep
the peace.
I think were both miserable that things
are going so badly after less than a year. I
dont know how we lost our ability to agree
and just get along. We used to always see
things the same way and now it sometimes
feels like we hate each other.
Im beginning to wonder if this
relationship is doomed, though
everything seemed so wonderful at the
beginning. Do other couples go through
things like this and survive? If so, how do

we get to the other side?
MICHAEL REPLIES:
Most couples are really gooey when
they rst get together. The idyll of new
love renders us starry-eyed, gives us
butteries and leaves us feeling so blissful
that we are happy to think everything the
other person says and does is wonderful.
We feel super connected and its easy to
be on the same page all the time.
This gooey period is a great stage,
because it creates a loving foundation on
which to build a relationship.
But its just a stage. After a while, you
nd that you cant always agree. Youre
two dierent people and sometimes
youre going to have very dierent
opinions. This is where you two now are.
Your anger at each other is a waste
of energy. If you want to stay happily
married, you should instead strive to
embrace, with some humor, that you will
sometimes disagree with each other over
matters both small and profound.
This will require giving up the fantasy
that you should always be able to agree,
and giving up the belief that something is
wrong if you dont.
It will also require accepting that you
arent right: you just have a dierent
opinion from your spouse. Trust me on
this: if you are trying to prove that youre
right, then youre trying to prove that
shes wrong. And once you start down
that road, its all downhill.
So in place of browbeating each other
in an eort to get your way when you
want two dierent things, take on the
never-ending challenge of guring out
what you might do instead.
Do you agree to go along with what Jen
wants? Do you stand your ground, even if
it means that she stays home while you
go to that movie she doesnt want to see,
or you skip her family reunion because
you cant stand her parents? And what
happens when you disagree over a really
big issue like what city to live in?
I cant give you a rule book for how to
resolve any of these scenarios, but here
are some guiding principles: if you and
Jen want to build a strong relationship
that can tolerate your not always seeing
eye to eye, you will both need plenty of
generosity. Youre also going to have
to accept that sometimes you will be
disappointed in each others choices.
Thats life.
Your rst move, regardless of what Jen
does, could be to stop being so wedded
to your own positions. While there will
be times that it is important that you do
not yield, save that for more important
matters than cat litter.

Swell, which has reopened even stronger
than before after a devastating re two
years ago, will have entertainment every
night; Murphs Bar and Pub, lesbian
owned with a mixed crowd, is the home of,
among other entertainers, dueling pianos
with two local gay pianists, John Flynn and
Matthew Kenworthy playing on Saturday
Nights; and Java Jukebox, which opened
this year, will feature a number of comic
acts, including Suzanne Westenhoefer on
July 7.
The Coee Mill in Rehoboth Mews
features more than 100 dierent coees,
breakfast treats, wraps and sandwiches.
The owners also have a shop, BRASHhh,
on North First Street across from Nicola
Pizza, which oers photographs by the
owner and clothing. A few doors north
is the gay-owned Double Dippers Ice
Cream, which is entering its 19th year.
Theres a new Starbucks, on Route 1
south, next to the Shoppes at Camelot,
and a new Surf Bagel at the Midway
Shopping Center. At a new building
just south of the Wawa on Route 1
northbound near Route 24 is the areas
rst Jewish deli, Rosenfelds Famous
Jewish Deli. The original is in Ocean City.
Soon, Rehoboth will have its rst Indian
Restaurant, Indigo, which is slated for 44
Rehoboth Ave., and word on the street is
that an upscale restaurant and wine bar will
go into the space once occupied by Cloud
Nine, and most recently by Lula Brazil.
If it rains, head north to Leftys Alley
and Eats in Lewes, which oers 16 lanes
of bowling, a sprawling second-oor
laser tag facility and bustling restaurant,
bar and arcade for the kids and kids at
heart. Its an impressive, state-of-the-art
complex that opened in February.
Another exciting newcomer to the scene
is Big Chill Beach Club, located on the
ocean side just south of the Indian River
Bridge. It will occupy a unique space, right
on the sand with a weather-proof rooftop
restaurant and bar seating 200.
Please be aware of some new beach
regulations especially the size
restrictions on umbrellas; no more than
36 inches in height, width and depth
are permitted. Totally restricted will
be tarps, cabanas, tents and canopies.
Grills and cooking devices are also
banned. According to Patrick Gossett, a
gay city commissioner, this ordinance
was enacted to keep beachgoers safe
while allowing emergency personnel the
ability to navigate our beaches in case of
emergencies.
