RE: Northam leads 50% to 33% in this weeks Dem Primary poll
From May 15 to 17, 2017, Garin-Hart-Yang conducted a survey among a sample of
601 likely Virginia Democratic primary voters. The survey was conducted from a
list of registered Virginia voters who have voted in at least one of the following
statewide Democratic primaries: 2016 presidential, 2009 or 2013 gubernatorial.
One-fourth of our sample is comprised of voters who did not vote in 2009 or 2013
aka new voters.

Our survey shows LG Northam maintaining a strong lead over Tom Perriello: 50%
Northam, 33% Perriello, 17% undecided. The depth of the LGs electoral support is
impressive; he holds strong double-digit leads among whites and African
Americans, he is ahead by 14 points among men and 20 points among women, and
he leads in the vote-rich DC media market by nearly two to one. The LG even runs
strong among Sanders voters (33% Northam, 44% Perriello) and the race is within
the margin of error among new voters (35% Northam, 39% Perriello).

The DEPTH of the LGs support is impressive as well. Two-thirds (66%) of Northam
voters say they support him strongly, while barely a majority (52%) of Perriello
voters express the same level of committed support. And among the 60% of
primary voters who tell us they are highly interested and engaged in the race,
Northam leads by an overwhelming margin (55% to 31%).

Several survey findings help illustrate WHY the LG has a strong standing among
Virginia Democrats. He leads Perriello on a number of key attributes and traits,
such as: having strong leadership qualities (34% Northam better, 16% Perriello),
having a proven record of delivering progressive results (35% to 20%), and he
leads Perriello by six points when it comes to standing up to Donald Trumps
divisive and hateful agenda.

In summary, while primaries inherently are unpredictable and fluid, our polling
shows that Ralph Northams proven record of standing up for and winning
progressive fights has resonated with the Virginia electorate, and that he maintains
the momentum as we enter the final month before the June 13th primary.
