SMART LIVING

Blogpost 01, health

We live in a world where many new, technological innovations are used. Many
jobs and functions are slowly taken over by technical innovations, even in de
medical world. What is also striking, is that people dont need as much
medication as before. Nowadays, there are many innovations that help prevent
illness and the modern patient is able to establish his own diagnosis. Because of
todays technology, everyone can keep track of his health. Straight to the doctor
for a little cough is not necessary anymore. With several new innovations, people
can have a good overview on their health. People do not come to the doctor with
a printout of the internet, but with a digital overview of his own measurements
(Visser, 2017).
The technical innovations can provide any personal information and people are
increasingly making use of all the information they can get. These new devices
that give all this information are a result of informatisation in this society (Besten,
2016). An 'intimate technological revolution' is coming. That is what the
Rathenau Institute wrote last year in a report. The human body has become a
quantifiable object (Visser, 2017).
Simple gadgets as pedometers, sleep gauges, temperature sensors and pulse
counters help to keep track the physical condition. These wearables (gadgets
that can be worn on the body) can certainly contribute to better health.
IBand
For example, you can sleep smart with the iBand. The band on your head ensures
optimal sleep. In this stressfull society it is important to rest very good while
sleeping because often it is not possible to do that at daytime. The band
maintains information such as body temperature, movement and information
about the brains. You can see this infomation on your mobile phone and the band
use it to let to let you fall asleep faster, to allow clear dreams and wake up on a
natural manner. Sleeping and dreaming have much impact on our health (Arenar,
2016).

Discolored patch
Due to this trend, people can decide more things by themselves. A group of
British scientists from the University of Bath have developed a patch that turns
green when the wound is infected. The patch release a fluorescent substance in
small quantities when the wound starts to become infected. This is why the patch
turns into green. A commercial launch is expected in 2020.
Because of this warning it is for doctors no longer necessary to prescribe
antibiotics as a precaution if they think that a bacterial infection might come. The
costs of unnecessary prescription of antibiotics is getting higher, the patch
provides a good solution for these high costs. With the aid of this patch, people
can decide if they need antibiotics by theirself (ICT&Health, 2016).

Samsung shoe
This trend is cross-sectoral, it it also be seen in the sector human movement.
Samsung has developed a sports shoe in which sensors are installed. The shoe
can help you with many things. For example, to improve sports techniques. It also
gives detailed information of how you did your fitness exercises. In an
accompanying app you can find all this information.

Samsung shoe (Tervoort,

2016).
With this kind of schoe, you can exercise more efficiently, improve performances
and prevent injuries (Tervoort, 2016). Especially injury prevention is very
important for your health. The number of sports injuries has increased sharply in
recent years, especially among young people and children. This is evident from
the Trend Report Physical Activity and Health 2000-2014 (RTL Nieuws, 2015). The
shoe can change this.
Future vision
Since the nineteenth century, the average age is increasing structurally, this is
partly due to the development of medicines (NOS, 2016). Will be the next step
the disappearance of medicines or even dokters? In my opinion not, but the
doctors work will change from prescribing medications into coaching clients. You
can live very smart nowadays in this world with different kind of divices en
wearables. I think that this trend will be more populair in the future for people
because it is saves time and worries. If people live smart, they are less likely to
get sick and theyre dont need to go to the doctor that often.
Of course all this smart living, and therewith tracking your own health, can also
lead to more doctor visits. People are very focused on their health in this way, but
people should not see any abnormal measurement results as a disease because
then digitization would leads to medicalization (Visser, 2017). That's not what we
want to achieve. I hope, in the future there will be a great balance between
medicines and smart living products.
