FATIMA MESSAGE

May 13, 2017, will be the 100th anniversary of the first appari on of Our Lady at Fa ma, in Portugal. Pope Francis will be
visi ng Fa ma on that day and will lead the world in prayer with a solemn Eucharis c Celebra on during which he will
canonize the two shepherd children of Fa ma, Francisco and Giacintha Marto to whom, together with their cousin Lucia dos
Santos, Our Lady appeared.

All our faithful are reminded of the message of Fa ma, which is to pray to Our Lady, lead a good life, and make sacrifices
for sinners.

In our Archdiocese, I will celebrate the Eucharist on this feast day at Our Lady of Fa ma Shrine at Karjat where I will pray
specially for the Archdiocese and consecrate it to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. All our faithful are invited to join in this act
of consecra on during their own family prayer at home, and to pray specially for peace in our country.

Canonisation at Fatima
Centennial Celebrations
T
he Holy Father in a preambulatory reflection on the forthcoming centennial
celebrations of the Fatima Apparitions on May 13 invites us to focus our attention
to Our Lady. It is at this shrine of Fatima, where a hundred years ago the Madonna
appeared to the three little shepherds, Christians from all over the world will congregate
to relive the encounter of these young visionaries with Our Lady and experience the grace
that inspired their love for Jesus.
Pope Francis said, Mary introduced the li le seers to the in mate knowledge of Trinitarian love
and led them to savour God as the most beau ful reality of human existence. Beyond every
other goal may there always be this: knowing and loving Christ as the apostle Paul would say
trying to conform increasingly to Him unto the total gi of self.
In a concrete sense, He called upon priests, to progress without ring, in their Chris an, priestly,
pastoral, and cultural forma on. He con nued, whatever your academic specializa on, your
first concern always remains that of growing on the path of priestly consecra on, through the
loving experience of God: an in mate and faithful God, as Blessed Francisco and Jacinta and the
Servant of God Lucia felt Him to be.
He exhorted pilgrims who would be visi ng Fa ma to contemplate the humble yet glorious
lives of these children, and feel drawn to entrust themselves, to the care of the same Master.
We always pray for this in the most ancient La n an phon to Our Lady: Subtuum praesidium
confugimus, Sancta Dei Genitrix. It invites us to seek shelter under the mantle of a mother who
takes us by the hand and teaches us to grow in the love of Christ and in fraternal communion.

approach the altar and urges us, "to Look to her and let her look upon you, because she is your
Mother and loves you greatly; let her look upon you, to learn how to be more humble and also
more courageous in following the Word of God; to welcome the embrace of her Son Jesus and,
strengthened by this friendship, to love every person following the example and the measure of
the Heart of Christ, to which Our Lady of Fa ma commits us to find love, hope and peace in her."
On the occasion of our pilgrimage to the Shrine of Fa ma, we must look at our Mother, who is in
Gods heart. The mystery of this girl from Nazareth is not extraneous to us. "It is not a ques on

1:48) also to every man and every woman, calling them by name and surname! His gaze of love
rests upon each one of us," he elaborates.
The rela onship with Our Lady helps us to have a good rela onship with the Church: both of
them are Mothers. We must therefore cul vate the filial rela onship with Our Lady because,
if this is missing, there is something of the orphan in the heart. But in moments of diculty a
child always goes to his mother. And the Word of God teaches us to be like children, weaned in
the arms of the mother.

may teach us to believe, worship, hope and love like Blessed Francisco and Jacinta, and the

Mary Mother of the World

s Mary the Mother of the
World? What has Fa ma and its
wonders have to do with it? Was
Mary at the foot of our recently
demolished crosses?
The recent spat of injus ces to
the Catholic community in our
Archdiocese, through the desecra on
of Holy Crosses, has woken up the
Catholics from all walks of life, and of
all ages to stand for their faith in Jesus
Christ and for their democra c rights
to build and venerate their religious

most common prayer at all these

Holy Rosary has included in it the
prayer of Fa ma.
Fa ma is undoubtedly the most
prophe c of modern appari ons. The

is a tangible example. On May 26,
1911, six and a half months a er the

Mary of Fa ma is not mother only

her universal motherhood, a reminder

Mother to the World
Looking deeper at the word Mother,
we note that in the Old Testament,
there are five important Hebrew terms
to explain mercy. Raham is one of
them. It means womb of a mother
and points to the motherly love of God.
It is evident that Mary is s ll relessly
living out the motherly compassion of
God. We find Mary beside the manger
in Bethlehem; we find her visi ng her
cousin Elizabeth in solidarity; we find
her at Cana, when she urged her Son
to help the wedding couple who had
run out of wine; and also on the way
to Calvary and at the foot of the Cross,
where she stood sorrowfully oering
her Son as the obla on which was to
redeem the world. She gave up her only
Son for the redemp on of the world.
Mary Beacon for Women
With the Annuncia on of the coming
of the Lord, through Mary, a simple
woman of Nazareth, it was understood
that one would wonder why a man
was not chosen, instead of a woman to
bring in the seed from God. Why, the
first choice from among the humans
who could be a link to the divine for
ushering in the long awaited Messiah,
was a woman.
Truly, God had answered the prayers
of the women who had suered
immensely hitherto at the hands
of injus ce, domina on, domes c
violence, lack of respect, and from the
suppression of their rights. God decided
that it would be a woman who would
be the chosen one from humankind. A
new concept of womanhood was born
upon the earth.
Mother from Home to the World
The words mother and home usually

go together. The mothers influence
is par cularly felt in the home, but
its eects last forever and wherever
the one influenced goes. Christs
humaneness was the influence of His
mother. Mary, who brought Him up in
love and with aec on, gave Him the
confidence He would need while he
went around as an i nerant preacher. It
was she who moulded His human heart
to be strong, enduring and pa ent to
live up to the lo y ideals expected of
Him from God His Father who sent
Him on mission even unto death, a
shameful and much derided death on
a Cross.
And a er accomplishing her task with
Jesus, she con nues her task with us,
the children entrusted to her by her
Son, when He was dying on the Cross,
Woman, behold your son, with respect
to the disciple John.
Marys Mantle
Ar sts represent Mary wearing a huge
mantle. In various cultures, it takes
dierent forms. Her mantle encourages
us to imitate Jesus tendency to include
all kinds of people among His disciples.
Her mantle shelters a very large family.
Legends and art show her protec ng
those who have been kicked out by
Church or society. She, who welcomed
the shepherds and magi to an in mate
family, wouldnt be unwelcoming to
those who come to her for help.
On the Path with Mary
Mary has shown us how to be true
disciples of Jesus the Way, the Truth
and the Life. In his apostolic le er
Rosarium Virginis Mariae, Pope John
Paul II invited us to contemplate the
face of Christ with Mary. Thus, if we call
on Mary constantly, she will walk with
us and transform us into the disciples
that Christ loves to have. When
we become so, we will be the ones
bringing libera on to the oppressed,
promo ng peace, love and service in
the world.
Great Saints of the Catholic Church
have been ardent devotees of
Mary. St Louis Marie de Monfort, St
Bernard of Clairvaux (who gave us
The Memorare), St Teresa of Avila,
a Franciscan Mariologist, Venerable
Agreda a Spanish Franciscan religious,
Bl. James Alberione and many others
have wri en extensively on her virtues,
and have even lived them. They
present, within their own me and
culture, a flowering of compassion,
generosity and crea vity that mark
them as descendants of Mary.
In conclusion, we remind ourselves,
that for thirty-three years, Mary had
learnt the art of walking with the
ques ons which would be answered on
the way her virgin birth, the danger to
her son from Herods decree, the rolling
away of the tombstone and many other
ques ons. She walked with Jesus with
definite steps.
Today, she con nues to walk on
earth, especially as persecu on
of Chris ans in our Archdiocese
reaches new heights, with the recent
demoli on of the Cross at DMonte
street, Bandra and at Kalina village.
Mary was with Jesus at the foot of the
Cross, and is there at the foot of every
cross. Every desecra on of a Cross
pains her heart, as much as it pains
ours. However, just as she accompanies
us in our protests, she invites us to
streamline all our Church ac vi es in
line with civil law, as long as it does
not lead us to sin. She reminds us of
what Jesus had said when He told His
disciples to give to Caesar what is
Caesars and to God what belongs to
God. May our Lady of Fa ma guide us,
and may we remember her in a special
way when we recite the prayer of
Fa ma, O My Jesus, forgive us our sins,
save us from the fires of Hell. And lead
all souls to heaven, especially those in
most need of thy mercy. Amen.

away. A certain Fr Oliveira
who witnessed firsthand the
miracle of the doves, gives
us an eyewitness account:
"It began in a town called
Bombazral, a short me a er
the statue had le Fa ma.
As part of the ceremony in
that par cular town, with
the streets filled, people
were singing hymns to Our
Lady and pressing to be
near the statue, someone
freed four white doves. The
greater part of the crowd
hardly no ced it. A er
flying o into the air, three
of the doves ... instead of
flying from the great crowd
to some roof-top ... made
several evolu ons over the
statue, and then suddenly,
to the amazement of all
who saw them, plummeted
downwards, and alighted at
Our Lady's feet!
This was only the
beginning. During the days
that followed, amidst
ever changing crowds,
moving from one town
to another, night and
day for almost two
whole weeks, the
doves did not
leave the statue.
They remained
there at the
very base of
the statue, as
though vying
one with the
other actually
to stand on
Our Lady's
feet. Yet
bands played,
people
shouted, the
bier on which
the statue
was mounted
moved and
swayed, rockets
exploded at night
and cascaded fire, while
giant searchlights burned at
them. They were constantly
bueted by flowers tossed
to the statue from the
surging crowds.
"But they did not fly. They
blinked, shook o flowers
that hit them, occasionally
stretched their wings to keep
balance. But they remained
there at her feet during the
en re two-week journey.
They refused food or drink.
"When the statue was
carried into Lisbon, I had
the honour of walking at its
side as Carmelite Ter aries
bore it triumphantly into the
city. I was so close to it,
and to the doves, that I
could reach out and touch

who had gone far out
of the city to meet

All during the
night of December
5, in the Church
of Our Lady
of Fa ma of
Lisbon, the
doves remained
standing at
the feet of
the statue. By
now, they were
more the object
of comment than the
beau ful statue or the glory
in which it was enthroned.
The newspapers had been
filled with the story of their
perseverance, their u er
fearlessness, the strangeness
of their posi on. Many must
have wondered what would statue's golden crown ...
happen ... now that they
had actually accompanied
the statue into the church
that had been prepared
for its recep on, refusing
to be brushed o or
frightened away.
The next morning, at
Mass, they had their
answer. In the morning,

High Mass, which was to
be followed by a general
Communion. During the
Solemn Mass, most of the
people in the great church
had undoubtedly stopped
watching the doves, to which
they were not accustomed,
to concentrate on the Mass.
This was especially true in
the solemn moment when
the bell sounded, and a great
hush fell over the crowd just
before the eleva on. "In
that moment of hush, there
was a sudden flu ering
of wings."
To the u er amazement
of all, two of the doves
suddenly flew ... a er two
weeks of refusing food or
drink and of remaining at
the feet of the statue ...
one sped straight to the
gospel side of the altar, and
the other to the epistle
side! There, as the bishop
straightened to raise the
Consecrated Host, they
alighted and folded their
wings ... one on each side ...
as though in adora on! As
the Mass progressed, the
two doves remained there,
to the bewilderment of the
celebrants and servers and
the stupefied congrega on.
But this was s ll not
the climax.
The third dove had not
le the statue. Suddenly, at
the moment of communion,
the third dove flew up
and perched on top of the

y Heart shall be your Refuge and the Way
that will lead you to God. On May 13, 2017,
we will be celebra ng 100 years since Our
Lady appeared to the three children - Lucia,
Francisco and Jacinta in Cova da Iria at Fa ma, Portugal. We
honour the Lady who is clothed with the Sun, with the Moon
at her feet, who wears on her head a crown of Stars (Rev
12:1). A Lady so dressed was the great sign which appeared
in the sky. Our Lady, from the very beginning, directs our
eyes heavenward to where she lives with her Son, where we
also shall live with them for all eternity.
During the appari ons from May 13 to October 13, 1917,
our Blessed Mother gave the li le children a vision of
Heaven, Purgatory and Hell. She told them that more people
go to hell for sins of the flesh, than for any other reason. She
told them to maintain their own purity and innocence, and
spread that commitment to purity and modesty. Our Lady
prophesied that many fashions would be introduced which
would lead to sins of the flesh. Modesty in dress, especially
at Mass in our churches, is something beau ful. It inspires a
way of life which makes it possible to resist the allurements
of Fashion. When we ponder the types of agony that Jesus
endured, He was scourged 121 mes. His whole body was
covered with wounds. The Fathers of the Church believe that
it was in repara on for the sins of the flesh. A Catholic Bishop
in South India has urged young girls to avoid wearing ou its
shorter than knee length in the church. There is a proper
dress code to be followed by women even in the Va can.
Our Lady of Fa mas purpose is to call the world back to

One Church
Quite significantly, the voice was that
of Peter, the same apostle that Jesus
called rock and the one who was to
head His Church. His words may inspire
us to ask ourselves: Have we come to
believe, and are we convinced that
Christ is the Holy One of God?
There is one Truth, one Way and
one Life. It isnt surprising that Christ
would ins tute one Church. The
Pope is the successor of St Peter who
must con nue in the footsteps of his
predecessor in the mission to spread
the Evangelium the Greek word for
Good News. To evangelise is to speak
about Christ to all.
The missionary task implies a
respec ul dialogue with those who do
not yet accept the Gospel (Catechism

death with all the graces necessary for

Saturday of five consecu ve months:

Communion 3) Pray five decades of the
Rosary 4) Keep Mother Mary company

Happy to be a Roman Catholic
If I am a Roman Catholic in India today,
it is because there is a lineage of people

do the same, first with my family and
friends, and then with all the people I
come in contact with.

that we have to be apostles who talk

An intriguing faith-based detective story in which an investigative reporter becomes

a true believer.
Skeptics and believers alike have all had doubts about faith at one point or
another. Especially around the time of Easter and the resurrection, these themes
seem to surface again with the question of did the Son of God actually die on the
Cross for the sins of the whole world and was He resurrected to save humanity?
The movie "The Case for Christ has been attracting attention at the box offices
across America as a way to answer these questions through the true story of
protagonist, Lee Strobel.

and even generates mild

Emmanuel Macron wins
French presidency

French voters have elected centrist Emmanuel Macron
as the country's youngest President ever, delivering a
resounding victory to the unabashedly pro-European
former investment banker, and strengthening France's
place as a central pillar of the European Union.
A crowd of Mr Macron's supporters roared with delight
at the news, jubilantly waving red, white and blue flags at
a victory party outside the Louvre Museum in Paris.
Marine Le Pen, his far-right opponent in the presidential
runoff, quickly called the 39-year-old to concede defeat
after voters rejected her "French-first" nationalism by a
large margin.
The result was not even close; official results showed Mr
Macron had won roughly 65 per cent of the votes.
Ms Le Pen's score of roughly 35 per cent proved lower
than her campaign polling numbers, and dashed hopes
that the populist wave which swept Donald Trump into the
White House would also carry her to France's presidential
Elysee Palace.
The head of the French bishops' conference welcomed
the election of President-elect Emmanuel Macron and
said he hoped June legislative elections would not place
the country "in an ungovernable situation."
Archbishop Georges Pontier of Marseille, president of
the French bishops' conference, told Vatican Radio on May
8, that French Catholics had also been left "divided like the
rest of French society" and said he counted on Macron and
his new government "being able to function."
"Macron has been elected in an important manner;
we must hope he succeeds for the good of our country,
otherwise it will be catastrophic," said Archbishop Pontier.
"Priorities for his new five-year term must include
struggling against unemployment, which is so destructive
for families, for prospects and for projects, as well as the
necessity of staying in Europe, and giving this Europe the
means of retaining the respect of every people."
In a interview on his diocesan website on May 3,
Archbishop Pontier said the Catholic Church had sought
to encourage "reflection and discernment" among voters,
rather than "taking sides for one or another candidate."
Born in Amiens, northwest of Paris, Macron was educated
at Jesuit-run La Providence High School, before studying at

the capital's prestigious Ecole Nationale d'Administration
and joining Rothschild and Cie Banque in 2008 as an
investment banker.
In 2007, he married his former La Providence drama and
literature teacher, Brigitte Trogneux, who was 24 years
older and had three children from a previous marriage.
Macron worked as an economic adviser to President
Francois Hollande, and was appointed Economy Minister
in 2014, deregulating some branches of industry and
liberalising Sunday trading. He resigned last August to
pursue his presidential bid.
French writer Samuel Pruvot, who interviewed the new
President at length for a book, said Macron sought baptism
at age 12 under the influence of his Jesuit teachers,
but viewed the Catholic faith "more intellectually than
spiritually" and would "distance himself as much as
possible from Church, faith and Catholicism" as President.
"Macron recognises there's a law of God and a law of
people, which aren't the same and reflect a different
hierarchy of values. ... He recognises this, but doesn't
adhere to it, since he considers that the truth is
inaccessible, and one must simply seek a consensus so
people can calmly live together."

praying of Rosary

the simple and effective prayer of the Rosary.
At his weekly General Audience on May 3, 2017, Francis
gave pilgrims in St Peters Square this advice: At the
beginning of May, let us invoke the heavenly intercession
of Mary, Mother of Jesus.
During his greetings to Polish pilgrims, the Pope invited
the crowd to applaud the Virgin Mary, Queen of Poland,
on the national holiday.
While to young people, Francis urged, learn to pray
with the simple and effective prayer of the Rosary, to sick
people, he encouraged, may the Blessed Virgin be your
support in the trial of suffering.

Pope urges new priests
to serve with joy

On Sunday, May 7, Pope Francis ordained ten men to the
priesthood, telling them to imitate Jesus in every aspect of their
ministry, so as to avoid hypocrisy and draw near to their people,
always serving with the joy that comes from being united to Christ.
Aware of having been chosen from among men and formed
in their favour to a end to the things of God, exercise in joy and
sincere charity the priestly work of Christ, the Pope said May 7.
He told the priests to be joyful, never sad. Joyful, with the
joy of the service of Christ, even in the midst of suering,
incomprehension of your own sin.
Always have before your eyes the example of the Good
Shepherd, who didnt come to be served, but to serve, he said,
asking them to please, dont be lords, dont be clerics of state,
but shepherds, shepherds of the People of God.
Pope Francis ordained ten men from dierent seminaries
of the diocese of Rome, coinciding with the 54th World Day of
Prayer for Voca ons. They hail from dierent countries around
the world, including Italy, Peru, Mexico and Azerbaijan.
As in the past, for his homily, Pope Francis used the ritual
homily from the Italian edi on of the Ponficale Romano,
the La n Catholic liturgical book containing rites performed by
bishops for the ordina on of priests, adding a few of his own
personal contribu ons to the text.
Speaking to the congrega on, the Pope encouraged them to
reflect on the service the new priests will undertake in the Church.
While Jesus was the only High Priest in the New Testament,
he wanted to choose certain men from among his disciples,
so that exercising publicly in the Church and in His name the
oce of the priest in favour of all men, they would con nue His
personal mission as teacher, priest and shepherd.
Pope Francis stressed that the men chosen by Jesus were
elected not to make a career, but to do this service.
A priest is above all called to serve the people of God, he said,
explaining that it is precisely this service that will configure them
to Christ and unite them with the priesthood of their bishop.
They will be preachers of the Gospel, shepherds of the people
of God and will preside over the ac ons of worship, par cularly
the celebra on of the sacrifice of the Lord, he said.
Speaking directly to the new priests, Pope Francis stressed
that by exercising their ministry, you will be par cipants in the
mission of Christ, the only master.
Give that word to all, which you yourselves have received with
joy, since you were children, he said, telling them to read and
meditate assiduously on the Word of God in order to believe what
you have read, teaching what you have learned in the faith, living
that which you have taught. He told the priests to nourish the
people of God with a doctrine that is simple, explaining that this is
how the Lord Himself spoke, and it arrived to the heart.

Dont give homilies that are too intellectual, elaborate.
Speak simply, speak to the heart. And this preaching will be
a nourishment, he said, adding that it will also be a joy and
support for the faithful.
Christ must be the scent of your life, the Pope said, stressing
that the word without the example of life isnt useful; its be er
to turn around, (because) the double life is a bad sickness in the
life of the Church.
Pope Francis told the priests to recognise and be aware of
what they are doing, primarily in administering the Sacraments.
He also said to imitate what you celebrate, so that par cipa ng
in the mystery of the death and Resurrec on of the Lord, you
bring the death of Christ into your limbs and walk with Him in
the newness of life.
A priest who has perhaps studied a lot of theology, and has
received 1,2,3,4 degrees, but who hasnt learned to carry the
Cross of Christ isnt useful, he said, adding that he will be a
great academic, a great professor, but not priest.
He placed par cular a en on on the Sacrament of Confession,
during which a priest forgives sins in the name of Christ and of
the Church.
Stressing the importance of mercy, he told the priests,
Please, I ask you, in the name of Christ and the Church, to be
merciful, always.
Dont load on the back of the faithful weight that they cant
carry, not even you, he said. Jesus rebuked these doctors, and
He called them hypocrites.
Pope Francis also urged the new priests to spend me with the
sick and elderly.

Communicating Christ to Millennials - the National
Summer Media course for Church leaders and laity was
solemnly inaugurated on May 6, 2017 at St Pauls Ins tute of
Communica on Educa on (SPICE), Mumbai.
Fr Devassia, the Vice-Provincial Superior of the Society of St
Paul, Fr Dominic DSilva, Director of SPICE, and Fr Joby Mathew,
General Editor, STPAULS-BYB were present for the event.
There are 27 participants for this three-week residential
Summer Course, designed to equip Church leaders and laity
with professional knowledge and skill sets in Media. The course
includes Journalism, Adver sing, Public Rela ons, Branding,
Social media, Graphic and Design, TV presentation, voice
modula on and other tools of communica on.
On Sunday, May 7, Cardinal Oswald Gracias delivered the
keynote address to the participants of the summer course
and the par cipants of the Symposium cum Workshop in view
of the 51st World Communica ons Day. Communica on is a
tool that God has given us, and we need to employ it for the
progress of humanity, society and world peace, said Cardinal
Oswald highligh ng the importance of communica on with
jus ce and charity.
SPICE and the Archdiocese of Bombay jointly organised the
Symposium-cum-Workshop on Communicating Hope and
Trust in Our Times. Bishop Allwyn DSilva, auxiliary bishop of
Bombay, Fr Myron Pereira SJ and Anand Castelino were the
panelists who treated the theme from the perspectives of
ecology and environment, Documents of the Catholic Church on
Communica on, and Chris an Family. Carol Andrade, the Dean
of SPICE and veteran journalist, ably moderated the event.

May 6 at Patharewadi BMC Depot oce. The Chairperson,
Mr Rohit of the BMC, welcomed all present; he shared
the direc ve from BMC HQ that we should focus on Zero

Members raised the issue of garbage being dumped on the
road. The Chairperson clarified that every society has been
given two garbage bins. Slums are covered under Da ak Yojana.
Willie Shirsat appreciated the good work being carried out by
the BMC of pre-monsoon cleaning of storm water drains, but

regre ed that the cleared silt from the drain remains on the
road for over a fortnight. BMC ocials replied that the vehicle
contract had not yet been confirmed, so there are no vehicles
to collect the silt; tree trimmings and branches of trees also

Thief desecrates statue
Even as Catholics were protes ng the demoli on of a Holy
Cross on Bazaar Road in Bandra, an incident of desecra on
of a Jesus Christ statue was reported in Kalina on May 3.
Within two hours of the incident, the Vakola police arrested
a habitual thief and drug addict, Suresh Balaji Gadge. During
interroga on, Gadge told the police that he threw a stone
and broke the statue to steal a gold chain on it.
When locals of Kolivery village in Kalina woke up, they
were shocked to see the statue desecrated. A huge mob
gathered at the spot, and residents raised concern over the
increase in the number of such incidents in the city. A er
the locals approached the police, an offence of hurting
religious sen ments was registered. Luckily, a CCTV camera
installed in a nearby building had captured the accused in
the act. Locals immediately iden fied him. We arrested him
in the a ernoon, said Mahadev Vavale, senior inspector of
Vakola police sta on. Police said Gadge had been externed
from city limits earlier, and that there are four oences of
the against him. He was recently released on bail.
We see a definite pa ern in such incidents in Santa Cruz,
Bandra, Juhu and Kurla. This has been done with deliberate
intentions of hurting the religious sentiments of the
Chris an community, said Godfrey Pimenta.

Bandra Gymkhana celebrates
Founders Day
One more edi on of the popular Members Day at the Bandra
Gymkhana was held on the tennis courts on Saturday May
6, 2017. The theme of the day was the Good Shepherd.
Bishop Allwyn DSilva celebrated the Mass at the Bandra
Gymkhana for the first me a er becoming Bishop. Several
priests concelebrated with him, including Fr Caesar DMello,
Fr Colman Carlos, Fr Joe Pereira, Fr Savio De Sales, and other
member priests.
Celebra ng the Founders Day, the Bishop in his homily paid
tribute to the vision of Dr DMonte, assisted by Mr Athaide
and others, who secured the land for this Gymkhana for the
be erment of the community, so that members could meet
and greet socially, spor ngly and amicably. In a way, the Bishop
went on to compare Dr DMonte who founded the Bandra
Gymkhana to Christ the Good Shepherd, seeking the welfare of
their flock. He also congratulated the Trustees, the Managing
Commi ee, present and past Presidents for making the Bandra
Gymkhana popular for their members.
Skills for Animators
Programme
The New Way of Being Church through Small Christian
Communities (SCC) is a movement which enables
Christians to experience a deeper sense of being
Church in their respective neighbourhoods, through
the invocation of the Word of God as their guiding light
and also by being humble servants like Jesus in their
communities. The Skills for Animators Training is one
such programme which equips the SCC animators to
better understand this movement.
This year, this programme was organised at Asha Kiran
and Biomedical Ethics complexes in St Pius X College
campus, Goregaon East, from April 21-23, and was
a ended by 83 animators (including 15 youth animators),
from 26 parishes in the Archdiocese of Bombay.
The programme began with the Enthronement of the
Bible and a reading from Acts 2:43-47. This profound act
reiterated that sharing of the Word will enable them to
discern the will of God for themselves, as well as for their
communi es. Elvin Colaco provided a very insigh ul look
into the global history of the SCCs and many interes ng
aspects through his session Perspec ves of SCCs.
The second day commenced with the Holy Eucharist
celebrated by Fr Benhur Rodrigues. As the day progressed,
our esteemed Resource Persons - Anand Castelino (We
need SCCs), Lorna DSouza and Michael Rodrigues
(Working Style of Animators/ Role of Coordinator),
Thomas Lobo (Holistic Growth) - brought out the
importance of the need, role and growth of SCC animators.
The passion for the Word of God that emanated from
Sr Manisha Gonsalves (Gospel Sharing), was not only
extremely contagious, but also incited a similar passion
from the par cipants, thereby making us very recep ve
and enthusiastic to learn and practise the Seven-step
method of Gospel Sharing.
The third and final day began with the Holy Eucharist
celebrated by Emeritus Bishop Bosco Penha, who, on
seeing the number of animators present, said he was
happy to see SCCs ac ve and growing in Mumbai. It was
a humbling and touching experience when, after Mass,
Bishop Bosco made me to meet each animator present,
thanking them personally for being ac ve in SCCs. The day
con nued with wonderful, inspiring sessions by Rueben
Fronteiro and Iona Pereira (Enabling Servant Leadership),
Augustine Mathana and Reena Poddar (SCCs vis-a-vis
Associa on/ Helpers vis-a-vis Collaborators), Elvin Colaco
(Func oning of SCCs) and Alan Colaco (Visi ng Skills).
Cer ficates were awarded to the par cipants and the
Organising Team was appreciated for the commendable
job. The 83 animators returned with renewed vigour
to build Gods kingdom through the NEW WAY OF
BEING CHURCH.

Feast of Divine Mercy
With great enthusiasm, prepara on for the Divine Mercy feast
was taken up by the members of the Divine Mercy Apostolate
of Our Lady of Visitation Church, Nerul, Navi Mumbai. The
novena with the chaplet began before the Good Friday service,
and the second day of the novena was conducted before the
Easter vigil service. It was very pleasing to see hundreds of
the parishioners reci ng the novena and the chaplet in one
resounding voice. Novenas along with the chaplet from the
third day ll the ninth day were recited in the church. Eminent
preachers were called to give reflec ons on the Divine Mercy
from Good Friday to Divine Mercy feast day. All the preachers
kept the listeners spellbound.
The feast day was celebrated with much grandeur. The
Eucharist was celebrated by Rev. Fr Deepak Noronha, the
Spiritual Director of the Divine Mercy Apostolate. The
members entered the church for Mass in a procession
with lighted lamps. The dress code for the Eucharistic
Celebration was red and white, to symbolise blood and
water. Fr Deepak Noronha gave a very inspiring homily on the
uncondi onal love of God, and how we misunderstand Gods
love some mes in our lives.

On May 6, 2017, the Daughters of St Paul (Pauline Sisters)
launched their eBook and eMusic Mobile Applications.
The launch took place at St Theresas Church, Bandra at

Prayer for the cause of
Kandhamal martyrs
The Archdiocese of Cu ack-Bhubaneswar will start praying
for those who were killed during the 2007-2008 an -Chris an
violence, diocesan sources said. This prayer is a part of a
process of the canonisa on of the Kandhamal martyrs. The
Kandhamal Martyrs Commi ee held its mee ng last March,
and has decided to compose a prayer in local language Odia.
The prayer will be circulated in parishes, mission sta ons,
convents, ins tu ons and in every Catholic family.
The purpose is to start praying for the cause of those who
have sacrificed their lives for Jesus during the pogrom, said
Divine Word Archbishop John Barwa of Cu ack-Bhubaneswar,
Odisha. The prelate said that the Commi ee members would
visit 24 parishes located in Kandhamal, where the violence
took place, to celebrate Mass on different Sundays, and
inform Catholics about the importance of praying for the
cause of the Kandhamal martyrs.
Meanwhile, the Committee has initiated a process to
collect articles, statues and anything that was burnt and
destroyed during the Kandhamal violence in order to
preserve as a memorial in a common place. The proposed
museum is planned for the sake of posterity and for
educa ng the future genera on about the persecu on and
peoples resilience of faith amidst those hard mes, said Fr
Pradosh Chandra Nayak, convener of the Commi ee.
The anti-Christian violence spearheaded by Hindu
nationalists in 2007 and 2008 claimed nearly 100 lives,
mostly Christians, and rendered more than 56,000
homeless. Several churches and Christians institutions in
Kandhamal were also damaged in the violence triggered by
the killing of a Hindu religious leader on August 23, 2008.

A new Home of Missionaries
of Charity
The Missionaries of Charity opened a new home in the
state of Orissa, East India. The new Mother Teresa religious
community is located in the district of Kandhamal, which was
the scene of an -Chris an violence in 2008. Archbishop John
Barwa said, It has always been a dream to open a religious
womens community in the parish of San Antonio of Padua, in
Salimaguchha in the district of Kandhamal. Now, a er several

contacts, God has listened to us, and the Missionaries of
Charity have agreed to open a home there,
The opening ceremony, with the blessing of the community,
is scheduled for May 13, 2017, on the feast day of Our Lady of

the Missionaries of Charity, and Sr Olivet, Regional Superior in
Orissa, for having welcomed our invita on to collaborate in the
pastoral ministry in Kandhamal, con nued the Archbishop,
recalling that it will be the third community of Missionaries of
Charity in that district. The other two convents are in the parish
of St Sebas an in Saramuli and Maria, and in the parish of the
Mother of God in Sukananda, two other places in Kandhamal.
Sr Olivet explained, We are happy to open our new home
in this district. People need our service. We are commi ed to
working for the poor and bringing the seed of the Kingdom
of God in this part of the world. With the grace and mercy
of God, we will do our best to stay close to the local people,
curing the poor, working for the common good, strengthening
faith in God, promo ng peace and harmony in the region.

Indian Theological Association
completes 40 years
An open forum of Catholic theologians in India has completed
40 years helping the Church become relevant in a country
of many religions and many cultures. The Indian Theological
Association (ITA) celebrated its ruby jubilee at its annual
meeting held at Montfort Spirituality Centre, Bengaluru,
capital of Karnataka. The mee ng chose as its theme 40 years
of Indian Theological Associa on: Milestones and Sign Posts.
The April 26-29 mee ng also elected its new oce bearers
with an expert on Hindu na onalism as president.
Fr Vincent Kundukulam, the newly elected President is a
professor at St Josephs Pon fical Seminary, Aluva, Kerala. The
based at Keralas Ko ayam town. Jesuit Fr Irudaya Raj is the
new Secretary and Salesian Fr Joy Pulickan is the Treasurer.
The meeting chose an Executive Committee comprising
Jesuit Fr Alangaram, Fransalian Fr Jacob Parapally, Indian
Missionary Society Fr Jerome Silvester and Sr D J Margaret, a
member of the Salesian Sisters of Don Bosco. They will hold
oce for three years.
The ITA, founded in 1976, helps theologians in India to
engage in theological discourses to develop an Asian and
Indian Christian theology that embodies the struggles
and hopes of people in the region. It is an inclusive
platform where scholars, social activists, thinkers,
religious leaders of all faiths join in developing an Asian
theology so that Jesus Gospel of Fullness of Life gets
roots and wings in the Asian journey towards the Reign
of God.

sex workers
Sisters Adorers would open its first house in the diocese
of Jalandhar, in the northwestern state of Punjab to
rehabilitate sex workers and vic ms of human tracking.
Punjab is one of the states in India, where pros tu on
in growing at a higher rate. We have decided to work for
these fallen women, and make eorts to curb the menace
of human tracking, said Sr Susan Joseph, a member of
Sisters Adorers of Calcu a province.
Ini ally, four Sisters would arrive in Jalandhar diocese in July
2017. We are committed to rescue and rehabilitate these
fallen women, providing them skills and voca onal training to
earn their living, and have a dignified life in society free from
the shackles of sin and slavery of pros tu on, Sr Joseph said.
Prostitution is rampant in many places in Punjab, and
many industrial areas in the state are becoming centres
for tracking of women and pros tu on. According to the
police, migrant women are lured into the flesh trade. Girls
are recruited from other states as well, such as West Bengal,
U ar Pradesh and Bihar, and Nepal.

Church body launches Clean
Election Campaign
The Clean Elec on campaign is an apoli cal drive by NBCC,
which is neither a poli cal party nor is influenced by any
poli cal agenda, within or without, its general secretary
Rev Dr Zelhou Keyho said.
The movement is not against or for any poli cal party.
It is also not against poli cians, not to pull them down or
push them up. But a movement to do just what is right and
what it is meant to be, he said. We are deeply concerned
with the elec oneering system that has gone corrupt in our
state, seemingly aec ng every system of our existence.
The system has now consumed the Nagas, making the
people ineffective and victims to the evil practices of
elec on. It has aected every system and it has become
like a virus killing us so ly, he said.
The movement aims to educate and speak against the
corrupt system of election in the state and appeal to
the peoples conscience to use their birthright without
monetary or any other influence, Keyho said.

A trained pediatrician, she oers her medical know-how
in Balukdubi, a remote village in Goalpura District (Assam),
where the Ursulines run the Nirmala Hospital. It is my joy to

Assam, one of the poorest states in India, is home to
various tribal groups. Its population is largely illiterate and

in homes built in bamboo, with rice as the main staple, under
threat from floods, soil erosion and ethnic violence.
People live day by day, Sr Jyothsna noted, selling firewood,
raising goats and pigs, growing rice.
Heavy rains are the cause of epidemics and illnesses. The most
common are malaria and typhoid fever, whose eects are o en
aggravated by delays in diagnosis and treatment. Other major
issues are early marriages and frequent abor ons, which lead
to high infant mortality. Many deliveries s ll happen at home,
due to the lack of medical facili es or distance.
In the light of this, the nuns seek to raise awareness among
women and children through various programmes and basic
life-saving treatments. Each month, we organise medical camps
in the villages.
In addi on, Many pa ents who come to our hospital with
epidemic infec ons are treated free of charge. Showing Gods
love is our source of joy and faith.

The heart of the message
of Fatima
May 13, 2017 is the 100th anniversary of the first appari on
of Mary to the three young shepherd children at Fa ma. On
that day, Pope Francis will be in Fa ma, and will canonise
Jacinta and Francisco, the two youngest ever non-martyred
saints. This en re year, but especially the months of May and
October are very special occasions to honour our Blessed
Mother, renew our devo on to her, listen to and live more
fully the message she brought at Fa ma.
The Community of The Daughters of St Paul, Boston is
bringing our statue of Our Lady of Fa ma around to various
sta ons or places in our convent and in our publishing
house each day of May. Its a lovely way of emphasising how
important Mary is in our lives, and of thanking her for her
tender care for us.
Star ng last fall, we have seen more and more material
on Fa ma in Catholic media. Fr Roger Landry has beau fully
expressed the importance of Fatima through the five
historical Papal visits, preparing for the visit by Pope Francis
on May 13, 2017.
The heart of the message of Fa ma, as I have remembered
and prayed with through the years, can be summed up briefly as:

There are a number of good movies out there on Fa ma,
each with dierent strengths. I talk about my favourite three on
this weeks Windows to the Soul segment on the Salt & Light 1929, an addi onal missionary inten on was added by the
Radio Show. Below is a more detailed look at each film, and
how each is not just faithful to the message of Fa ma, but if
and how it communicates the message of our Blessed Mother
in a way that is deeply moving, accessible, and relatable.
The Best of Them All: The Miracle of Our Lady of
Fa ma (1952)
Dated in its presenta on, and without the advantage of
the latest informa on that is now public about Sr Lucia and
the appari ons (for example, Sr Lucias later life, the secrets
that Our Lady entrusted to the children). But for the most
part, the movie is quite accurate, with the excep on of the
drama sing of some events (especially of some of the early
a empts of the government to derail the appari ons) and a
few details. The writers weave together true details about
the apparitions, skillfully moving the story forward and
revealing the character of the children and the life-changing
impact that Marys appearance had on them. For example,

Christians in Africa
Pope Francis challenged the Catholic community to pray
that the con nent's Chris ans will witness to reconcilia on,
jus ce and peace.
The May 4 video began with footage expanding over the
beau ful landscapes of Africa, and changes to quick scenes of
diverse individuals reflected in mirrors like a doctor with a San
Damiano Crucifix hanging beside her, a shop owner reflected
among the goods in his shop, and a woman in tradi onal African
a re smiling among vegetables in the marketplace.
However, as the music became more heartfelt, the
Pope admitted, We cannot fail to see fratricidal wars
decimating peoples and destroying these natural and

Pope Francis asked for prayers to assist the Christian
communi es witness to Christ, and promote peace among
the countries struck by bloodshed and famine.
The Apostleship of Prayer, which produces the monthly videos
on the Popes inten ons, was founded by Jesuit seminarians in
France in 1844 to encourage Chris ans to serve God and others
through prayer, par cularly for the needs of the Church.
Since the late 1800s, the Jesuit-run global prayer network

Returning families repair
damaged homes
Despite enduring over six years of war, some of Syrias
displaced Christians are returning to their towns and
repairing their homes, and others are starting new
businesses, with support from anti-persecution charity
Open Doors.
In Maaloula, a small town 30 miles from Damascus,
Open Doors has worked through local partners to help
four families to return and repair their homes, and is in
the process of helping others do the same. Almost 3,000
people lived in Maaloula before the war in Syria began,
most of them Christians, but the town was occupied by
fundamentalist Muslim group al-Nusra, forcing almost all of
the inhabitants to flee their homes. The militants no longer
occupy the town, but many homes were damaged in the
figh ng, and every church has been burned or vandalised.
Gradually, the infrastructure in Maaloula is also
being restored. "A bakery opened its doors again, also
the pharmacy and even a bookshop. The government
has invested in repairing the streets; this also was an
encouragement for the displaced to return. Everywhere you
go, you see villagers cleaning in and around their houses,
clear signs of more people returning to their homes.
Syria is number 6 on the 2017 Open Doors World Watch
List. Open Doors works through local partners to provide
relief aid to tens of thousands of displaced Christians,
alongside long-term support such as providing training and
trauma counselling.
Open Doors has launched the Hope for the Middle East
campaign, a global, seven-year campaign mobilising Chris ans
around the world to stand with the Church in the Middle East.
As part of this, Open Doors is asking people to sign the One

Million Voices of Hope pe on, which will be presented to the
UN in December 2017. The pe on calls for equality, dignity
and responsibility for Chris ans and other minori es in Syria

Catholic Church in China gets
20,000 new members
Some 20,000 people reportedly become Catholics on
the mainland, but some dioceses were still compiling
their figures.
There were 4,446 new Catholics baptised in China's
northern Hebei province during Easter, the highest number in
the country. Other provinces with over 1,000 new bap sms
include 1,593 from central Shanxi, 1,327 from southern
Guangdong, 1,234 from northwestern Shaanxi, 1,169 from
eastern Shandong, 1,168 from eastern Zhejiang and 1,097
from central Henan.
Hebei is the largest Catholic province in China with
nearly 1 million Catholics, and is a stronghold of the
underground Catholic community. Shaanxi, Shanxi and
Zhejiang are also tradi onal Catholic provinces, each with
more than 200,000 Catholics.
Eleven other provinces had a few hundred new Catholics,
whereas the Tibet autonomous region (where 92 per cent of
the popula on is Tibetan, and the majority are Buddhist) and
Hainan province had one and eight bap sms respec vely.
The Church in Hainan administered baptism during
the two most important Church feasts each year: Easter
and Christmas.
"They were given three months systematic catechism
educa on, before we decided they were fit for bap sm," the
priest said.
A preliminary report showed 19,087 people become
Catholics over Easter, as some dioceses were s ll compiling
their figures as of April 25, according to Hebei Faith Press,
which collected the figures.
Kaifeng was the only diocese in Henan that had no
bap sms. Fr Han Zhentao of Kaifeng told ucanews.com that
he bap sed two children and six adults in his parish this year,
but was unable to submit the figures before the deadline.

Sir, TED (Technology Entertainment Design) is an Interna onal
Media Organisa on that posts brief talks online, under the
slogan Ideas Worth Spreading! It was founded in February
1984, and is held annually since 1990.
The talks are typically between 10-20 minutes, and are
delivered by influen al speakers who are experts in various fields
such as business, science, technology, culture, history, etc.
In 2013, Pope Benedict XVI was awarded the Charter of
Compassion. Pope Francis is the first Pon to address TED on the
theme The Future You! It was aired on April 26, 2017, although
TED 2017 took place April 24-28 in Vancouver, Canada. Here are
some brief extracts:
To have a hopeful outlook for the future, we must plant
seeds of humility, solidarity and tenderness. Everyones
existence is deeply ed to others. Life is not merely a passing
shadow, but about interactions. None of us is an island,
autonomous and independent, but rather standing together
to build the future. Everything is connected, and we need
to restore these connec ons to a healthy state. The Good
Samaritan and Mother Teresa are bright candles who have
created a new world based on care for others.

Mothers Day
Sir, While we look forward to Mothers Day, we must analyse
its significance. The first and most important role of a believing
mother is to preach the gospel to her children. In the same way
that the Bible gives a picture of Sarah, the congrega on mother,
who cares for its members, a natural mother also cares for the
children in the small home congrega on, where the building
blocks of faith and forgiveness are taught, and the love of Jesus is
felt. It is good that a mother preaches the gospel and prays with
her children. Gods Word teaches us that He has known each child
before his bones are even framed (Jer 1:5), and that He knows
the book of each childs life before it is even opened (Ps 139:16).
By preaching the gospel, a believing mother, together with her
believing husband, tends the ny seedlings that God has placed
in their home and in their care. As the child grows, the mother
and father nurture, instruct, comfort and admonish. They, with
many weaknesses, plant the seeds of faith in prayer.

Another important role of a believing mother and father is to
bring their children to the feet of Jesus, to the hearing of Gods
Word. Children learn from their parents example how important
it is to be at services and the gatherings of Gods children. They
also see how Gods children are served in their home, how the
family pauses around Gods Word at home. As the saying goes:
If mama isnt happy, nobody is happy.
Mothers can set the tone for the atmosphere in the home
the posi ves and nega ves. They teach by how they speak to
their children and by how they treat others. Mothers also play an
important role in life by having children par cipate in household
chores. The workload is lighter when all members of the family
par cipate. Mothers have a role in teaching their children values
like responsibility, respect, honesty and diligence. Along with
tending to all the prac cal du es of caring for the home, it is
important that a mother also spends me with her children:
reading, singing, etc. and fostering open communica on by
taking the me to really listen to and talk to her children.

Sir, This has reference to the le er on Small Savings Schemes
by Tony Menezes (May 6-12, 2017) expressing dismay over the
reduc on in the interest rates on small savings schemes and the
nega ve impact on the lives of senior ci zens and re rees.
It is true that burgeoning infla on, increasing life-spans and
changing family structures are rapidly disrup ng the dynamics
of re rement planning in India. Unfortunately, Indias state of
re rement readiness and awareness of re rement inves ng is
at a nascent stage. The Employee Provident Fund and the Pension
and pension investment avenues oered to employees.
However, vast sec ons of unorganised and self-employed
individuals do not have access to these re rement savings
vehicles. While the popular Public Provident Fund Scheme
(PPF) is an op on, systema c Investments in Mutual Funds and
regular use of Equity Linked Savings Schemes (ELSS) products
that also oer tax benefits at the me of investment are good
vehicles available to individuals to build a re rement nest.
The new Na onal Pension Scheme (NPS) under the PFRDA
regula ons seems poised for growth over the next decade, as
it is a voluntary re rement savings scheme.
A month ago, I a ended a seminar at St Andrews Auditorium in
Bandra, organised by the Ci zenCredit Coopera ve Bank for the
community on Making your Money Work for You Inves ng in
Todays Times. Among several good ideas, the sessions stressed
the need to understand the power of compounding and the
cost of delay. Star ng early in life and saving enough will give us
a headstart and the comfort of mee ng our re rement goals.
For example, if one saves and invests Rs 5,000 per month
star ng at the age of 28 with returns assured at 12%, the total
investment at 58 works out to Rs 18 lakhs, while the wealth
created is a substan al Rs 174 lakhs. On the other hand, if one
saves and invests Rs 15,000 star ng at the age of 48 with returns
assured at 12%, the total investment at 58 works out to Rs 18
lakhs, while the wealth created is a meagre Rs 25 lakhs.
In India, we are seeing a gradual shi towards an increase in
financial assets, as the reward and return ra o between the broad
asset classes is changing. Over the next decade, most investors will
shi their alloca ons to higher yielding Mutual Funds and other
market-linked vehicles. This is a normal trajectory that we see in
other countries across the world. Even as we hope for a sound
social security network, we are confident that the government
and the investment management industry will work together to
create a more conducive ecosystem to address the vital need for
re rement income security in India.

dier, as there is a vast dierence between Hinduism and
Hindutva. Just because the BJP has capitalised on the Hindutva
slogan, it does not mean that liberal-minded Hindu intellectuals
have accepted the Hindutva ideology.

Our Religion is based on Truth, Service, Peace and Unity. We

curbs on freedom of thought and speech which is the core
requirement for development of modern society. The country
looks totally divided as the secular fabric is being destroyed. The
interna onal community has downgraded our countrys ranking
on human rights, and we are moving backwards when a na on
with a rich heritage should be moving forward.

Rich farmers must be taxed
Sir, The government has ini ated several measures to widen
the tax base and unearth black money. Recently, a member of
Ni Aayog, the government think-tank, suggested that rich
farmers should be taxed. But this idea was quickly shot down
by the government.
It is well known that only income from agriculture is tax-free,
but in reality, other income too goes untaxed, as it is dicult
to dis nguish one from the other. Hence many persons with
black money masquerade as farmers only to get tax benefit.
Apparently, the government is not willing to touch
agricultural income even with a barge pole, ostensibly because
this subject does not come under the Central list of subjects!
This is a very specious argument as the government at the
Centre now controls several states, including the largest, viz. UP
and it should not find it dicult to ini ate proceedings to make
tax on agricultural income a law , with the support of other
par es. So why is the government dithering on imposing tax on
rich farmers when it can earn several thousand crores of rupees
? The reason is that many leaders across the poli cal spectrum
come from a farming background, and have considerable
land holdings and influence. Hence, neither the Govt nor the
Opposi on will support any move to tax rich farmers. The
poor farmer who barely ekes out a living is made a convenient
scapegoat in the gameplan. It is ironical that rich farmers who
live like maharajas and who benefit most from Govt subsidies
on purchase of fer lisers, tractors, seeds, electricity, and even
water, are allowed tax-free income. By not taxing these rich
farmers, all this talk of demone sa on and unearthing black
money seems nothing but hogwash.
