Atrain starts at rest and accelerates uniformly at the rate of 2 m/s2 for 10s.

It then
maintains constant speed for 200s. The brakes are then applied and the train is
uniformly retarded and comes to rest in 50s. Find: 1.The maximum velocity reached
2.the retardation in the last 50s 3. the total distance travelled 4.the average velocity of
the train.

A spacecraft flying in a straight course at 75km/s fires its rocket motors for 6s. At the end
of this time the speed is 120km/s in the same direction. Find: 1. the spacecraft\'s avg
acceleration while motors were firing. 2. the distance travelled by the space craft in the
first 10s after the rocket motors were started, the motors having been in action for only
6s.

(a) Case I:

Case II

u = 20 m/s and it is constant for t2 = 200 s.

then

S2 = u t = 20 200

= 4000m

Case III:
(1) Maximum velocity reached = 20 m/s

(2) Retardation in last 50 S = 0.4 m/s2

(3) total distance = S1 + S2 + S3

= 100 + 4000 + 500

= 4600m.

= 17.69 m/s

EXPERT ANSWER

Rahul Verma , Meritnation expert added an answer on 3/9/13

the distance travelled by the particle in nth second will be
sn = [a/2](2n-1)

now, at the end of 2nd second

s = [a/2](2x2 - 1) = 2 m
or
a = (2x2) / 3 = 1.33 m/s2
which is the acceleration of body after 2nd second
now, the velocity will be
v = u + at
here
u=0
t=2

so,
v = 0 + 1.33x2
or
v = 2.66 m/s

now, similarly we can find the velocity of the the particle after 4th and then the second seveth second.

1) The minute hand of a clock is 7 cm long. Calculate the distance covered and the
displacement of minute hand of the clock from 9.00 AM to 9.30 AM.

1) Radius = 7cm

Distance = Half the Circumference of the circle= 2r/2= r= 22/7 x 7= 22 cm

Displacement = Diameter = Twice the radius = 2 x 7 = 14 cm

2) Circumference of a circle = 2r

Distance travelled by an athlete = 2 x 22/7 x 100 = 628.57 cm

3) average speed = total distance/total time

Total distance = (500 + 200)m = 700m

Total time = (2.10 + 1.00)min =3.10 min =186sec

Average speed = 700/186 = 3.763 m/s

Average velocity = Total displacement from initial position /total time

Displacement = (500 200)m = 300m

Time = 3.10min = 186 sec

Average velocity = 300/186 = 1.612 m/s

A table clock has its minute hand 4.5cm long. Find the average velocity of the tip of the
minute hand

(a) between 12:00 a.m to 12:30 a.m and

(b) between 12;00 a.m to 12;30 p.m

Speed of hour hand = 0.5 degrees per minute.

Speed of minutes hand = 6 degrees per minute.

Angular distance moved by the minute hand between 12:00 AM to 12:30 AM = 30 (6 degrees) = 180 degrees

Average angular velocity in this period is

Average velocity of the tip of the minute hand will be

Similarly, for the second part the minute hand will cover (6 degrees) (750) = 4500 degrees

Average angular velocity in this period is

Average velocity of the tip of the minute hand will be

hii..!! i m pankaj jha of ix-c

the answers are:-
Q.1) speed of sound = 346 m/s
time = 5 min
Distance = speed * time
= 346*5
= 1730 m
Q.2) Distance travelled=36 m
time = 30 min = 0.5 hr

speed = distance/time
= 36/0.5
= 72 km/hr
Q.3) diameter of circle = 28 m
radius = 28/2= 14 m

circumference of circle = 2*pie*r

= 2*22/7*14
= 88 m
distance = 88 *4
= 362 m (we have multipied 88 by 4 because he has taken 4 rounds)
displacement= 0 m

Q.4) time taken = 10 min

speed = 36 km/hr

acceleration = (final velocity- initial velocity)/t

a= (v-u)/t
= (36-0)/10
= 3.6 km/hr2

Q.5) speed = 36 km/hr= 10 m/s

time = 5 sec
aceleration = (final vel. - initial vel.)/t
a = (0-10)/5
a = -2 m/s

from 2nd equation of motion

s = ut + 1/2at2
s = (10*5)+1/2(-2)*52
s = 50+ 1/2(-2*25)
s = 50+1/21*-5025
s = 50 - 25
s = 25 m

Q.6) acceleration = -2 m/s-2

time taken = 10 sec

from 1st equation of motion

v = u + at
0 = u + (-2*10)
0 = u -20
20 = u
or
u= 20 m/s

Q.7) initial velocity = 56 km / hr = 15.55 m/s

final velocity = 58 km / hr = 16.11 m/s

acceleration = (final vel. - initial vel.)/t

a = (16.11-15.55)/1
a = 0.56 m/s2

Q.8) retardation = 90 cm/s2 = 0.9 m/s2

initial vel. = 27 m/s2
final vel. = 0 m/s2

from 3rd equation of motion

v2 = u2+2as
(v2)-(u2) = 2as
(0)2-(27)2= 2(-0.9)s
0 -729 = -1.8s
-729 = -1.8s
-729/-18 = s
405 = s
or
s = 405 m

hi

Q1) acceleration(a) = 4 ms2

initial velocity(u) = 0 m/s
time (t) = 10 s
final velocity(v) = ?
distance (s) = ?
from the second equation of motion

s= ut+ 1/2at2
s= (0*10)+1/2(4*10*10)
s= 0+1/2(400)
s= 0+200
s = 200 m
