Are your Fingerprints on those Door Handles?

by Len Lathrop
Was it your brothers school or your school or were your children students
there? Maybe you visited for a meeting, kinda like being called to the
principals office, just worse. Just think about the number of fingerprints that
the three doors of the Kimball Webster School have recorded, some with
gloves and mittens and some just bare hands of all sizes and shapes.
Staff photo by Bruce Preston

These doors will soon be gone as new ones are on order. The 2018 budget
called for their replacement, and this week the school board awarded the bid
to Portland Glass for the three doors that have swung open so many times over
the years. For $17,148, new aluminum doors made of black metal will be in
their place, including the door in the front that you see from Library Street and
the two doors that are part of the addition to the original Webster School.
While we can ask if you have ever walked on the roof of the Alvirne
gymnasium/library, the answer is probably no for most. But if you have been
in the Steckevicz building you know that rain is captured in buckets. The
project will be paid for out of capital reserve funds, which had been put away
by voters for school district building repair. The voters approved $175,000; the
bid from Corolla Contracting came in at $136,400. Business Manager Karen Kinball School before the 1929 fire that destroyed the center of the building

Proudly Marching
in the Litchfield
Memorial Day
Parade and Program
submitted by Gail Barringer
The town of Litchfield was settled/established in 1734. The
towns history is replete with instances of the citizenry going
off to war, leaving family and friends to keep the home fires
burning, as the expression goes.
Joan Kendall, Litchfield native and local seamstress, has
handmade period costumes representing various residents of
the past, both those going to war and those staying behind.
This contingent will proudly march in the May 29 Memorial
Day Parade, which will step off at 10 a.m. from the Litchfield
Middle School and march to the fire station. A program
of remembrance will be provided by the historical society,
followed by tours of the historical society building which
houses an enormous array of genuine local, historical artifacts.

May 17, Alvirne softball stands strong in Division 1
standings at 9 and 4 on the season.
The following are game reports from Alvirne Coach
Sarah Brisk. Facing Londonderry on May 15, the
Bronco ladies were silenced by a grand slam in the
first inning. The Alvirne struggled at the plate the
entire game, hitting only three singles in all. These
came from Liz DeRosa, Farrah Cestrone and Alexis
Charbonneau. Unfortunately none added up to a digit
on the scoreboard. Kellie Kennedy suffered the loss,
pitching seven innings and giving up seven runs on 10
hits.
On May 13 vs. Exeter, the Alvirne girls were
swinging bats that were almost too hot to handle. In
fact, the AHS team tallied an even dozen runs in all
compared to one lonely run by the home team. In

and one double as well. Meanwhile, Alicia Salvalzo netted a triple. Seven Alvirne hitters achieved RBIs
with Bradish and Salvalzo topping the list with four and two RBIs, respectively.
As for the game at Concord on May 10, the Lady Broncos, once again, put on a heavy-hitting show
